Title: The 2020 Song A Day Thread
Post by: TheNorm on January 17, 2020, 11:23:43 PM
So here's the story: on New Year's Day a friend in FB land decided that he would post a song a day that he liked, no rhyme or reason. Personally, I liked the idea so much I figured I'd start it too.

Made it about six days before I realized that required logging into FB each day, and honestly, fuck FB.

Fast forward to the 17th of January, and I figured what the hell: I'll just start posting it here. Best part about doing it this way? You can participate too. The more music, the better. Anyway, here's Day 1 (for here, anyway).

The Go-Go's - Head Over Heels

I just love this song so f'ing much. It's catchy, it's 80s. The bass line is underrated but delivers. Everybody loved Belinda Carlisle, and I liked her too but damn did I have a crush on Jane Weidlin (Joan of Arc!).

So anyway, participate as much or as little as you want. I hope you do, music is good. :)

haha I love this!

ok, Ill piggyback off of yours...
So, not a new wave guy, I think everyone her knows that, but we all have our guilty pleasures and while I was not a Go-Go's guy, I did like this song as it pertains to the opening sequence in Fast Times.
The new wave fads, back when malls were the it place, the designer jeans (Jordache anyone?) the arcade video games of the day, the Pat Benatar lookalikes, it was f'in awesome lol and We Got the Beat was the anthem

It's been so long since I've seen that movie I totally forgot that the Go-Gos were in the open for it. Hahahaha, I remember being a mallrat and just meeting people up there! Absolutely love that song too though (I freely admit to being a Go-Go's slappy at this point lol).

For today, January 18, I'm gonna go with the choice I used on Day 1: probably the most recognized song from what may very well be the biggest musical of the past decade. I'll leave you with this...

"I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory
When's it gonna get me?
In my sleep? Seven feet ahead of me?
If I see it comin', do I run or do I let it be?
Is it like a beat without a melody?"

The Broadway Cast of Hamilton - My Shot

not much into musicals but those lyrics are dope.

Since Im bringing up guilty pleasures, I might as well admit it, Gwen Stefani is one.
This song was everywhere when we were vacationing in Cabo so being with the ladies meant you were dancing to this tune ;-)

Speaking of guilty pleasures, for January 19 (late but whatever) I'm really digging Ariana Grande's stuff. Totally not a song that refers to a current situation or anything like that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Something I love is taking something that, well, I love, and re-shaping it or re-imagining it. Obviously, sometimes you get things that feel like they completely missed the point, or you get something that takes something familiar and finds new and interesting ways to present it. To that effect, within the past year I discovered both lo-fi (I promise, I won't barrage this thread with lo-fi songs), which, for me at least, is nice, chill, and not sensory overloading unlike some music (including other music I listen to).

So, for an example of something familiar, that I love, shaped it into something new, I give you a classic from my childhood: Mario 64, and the song from the stage Dire, Dire Docks, remixed.

Maintains the parts that make it great, and turns it into an absolute banger. Can't help but love this.

Love the choices, fellas. Also been awhile since I've seen Death Proof, so thanks for jogging my memory. LOL

Anyway, January 20.

I didn't listen to very much music in the 90s. I actually specifically remember, 6th grade, having to fill out some sort of music questionnaire thing in chorus class, and literally not being able to answer because I just didn't listen to music. Music was something my parents put on the radio in the car. It was just noise, mostly. I had some cassettes from earlier years at that point (literally like, Green Day Dookie and Offspring Smash, with Silverchair thrown in? and the CDs I had were basically movie soundtracks. Episode I soundtrack, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin soundtrack. Took me until high school to really get into artists).

So, when I heard this song, somehow, amazingly, just last year, I was blown away. It kicked off something of a 90s renaissance for me, courtesy of a combination of Youtube Music and Pandora.

I love singers that sound like this. It is a very 90s sound, for sure, more artists today would sound like Taylor Swift or Katy Perry give or take a Sia or Florence and the Machine, but also, I love the lyrics. They're simple, and yet when sung with the tone of her voice it adds just an incredible amount of emotion. I imagine this was the perfect breakup song for a lot of people back in the day.

This song always gave me a Heart esque vibe what with her tone and ability to hold the note.

Before I continue, just want to say I love that you guys are jumping in with your picks too. Keep 'em coming-we might all have different tastes depending on the day but I love seeing what interests you/keeps you guys going. Kudos.

Anyway, even though I've missed a couple days I'll just jump back in with this little Billie Eilish jam I've been digging lately. Would love to put together a routine for this someday (and you'll find a song I post on more than a few days will probably end up being related to something I can use down the road lol).

Billie Eilish - You Should See Me in a Crown (also, I won't link it here but you should look up the vertical video for this song and watch it on your phone).

I never even heard of Billie Ellish until what, a couple of weeks ago?
I'm so not hip anymore lol

I'll go the other way and offer up this gem from the 50's by Chester Arthur Burnett, or other aka Howlin Wolf.
He's one hat actually sounds like his moniker, to me anyway.
A blues legend signing what would be covered by other blues artists many times over.

Never heard of her, but fired up Spotify while at the gym and I dig her. Not all of what I heard, some of its a bit poppy for me, but I definitely heard some tunes that I liked. This is why I love threads like this, fresh input.

This is the last "newest" artist I added to my faves, Samantha Fish.
She's a breakout blues girl, I say breakout, been around 6-8 years I guess, but man, serious talents.
I hear shit like this and it just makes me want to practice my guitar for days.
Surprising when I found this vid, I never knew she went red lol

Yea I don't like everything ZZ puts out but the tone of her voice is what gets me.  I like unique sounding singers.  The first time I heard her I did not expect her to look like she did when I finally looked her up.

And here I was thinking I was the only one around here that might know who ZZ Ward is. Good choice. Also the reason for (to this day) my one and only photo credit. :)

Every summer Ann Arbor has this weekly outdoor concert series called Sonic Lunch, and my brother suggested we should go check this person out. Got there early enough and we were up close. Took a bunch of shots but this is the one I posted that day...

Sonic Lunch took notice of it, asked if they could use it and a short time later my photo was front and center for a time. Someone even asked what camera I was using for that shot...just my iPhone lol.

Funny enough I found her a few years ago following a thread similar to this.  The post was on Danielle Colby's twitter feed and I gave it a shot.  I have been listening to her ever since.  I have never understood how she is not a bigger star, ZZ Ward that is.

I've been getting into Harry Belafonte and various 50s music lately? I've had a thing for 1920s big band music since Boardwalk Empire, and an offshoot of that (since 20s music isn't exactly the easiest to come by at the time) was an appreciation of 40s music, but for some reason the 50s I've avoided, until recently. It's not exactly an unknown song, but it's sure to still put some pep in your step after listening. So go on, jump in the line, rock your body in time.

I think it's almost cliche to like The Rolling Stones because their catalog is so freaking vast and extends decades, and decades of great albums, not just one good record surrounded by ten years of shit...ok, 80's excluded.  ;)
It's impossible to declare a favorite, but when Im asked, I declare Gimmie Shelter, if for no other reason, the Merry Clayton vocals. Man its just so freakin good.

If this thread has nothing but the Rolling Stones or Beatles for weeks on end it would still be amazing.

Not where I'm going today though.

February 9 finds me dropping another Billie Eilish tune on all of you.

Somedays, you absolutely need to just fire up a theme song simply to get through the day/night. Like today.

This was a weird song when it was new and remains one that most don't like but I love.  Back when my mullet game was strong and metal was my jam this was a guilty pleasure of mine.

Absolutely LOVED Siouxsie & the Banshees back in the day!

February 14

Not much of a Valentine's Day person, which is weird because deep down I'm a bit of a hopeless romantic. This song got me through some shit a few years ago. Neither one of us handled things well, and even after this song got me through that rough patch we proceeded to make a mess of each other's lives for a couple more years after that. It prompted one of my best friends to say "for as smart as you are, you make some really dumb decisions when it comes to women." Guilty as charged.

My dad turned me on to this song and Johnny Cash.
I know Cash didnt write this song but he is such a narrative force, it seems what ever he does, it's his own.

Love this band, this song got some considerable play late in 2014/early 2015 for me. Yep, same relationship. I don't make the same mistake twice, I make it five or six times just to be certain.

Since we mentioned our dads contributions to our music likes, I want to throw in this one by Jerry Reed.
I remember dad getting me to listen to this and the Reed was immediately relatable.
Love his everyman sound and style, even on a campy tune like this one. Later on, I discovered what a talented guitar player he was and even played on Elvis Presleys version of his song, "Guitar Man."
After Smokey and the Bandit, needless to say Reed already had me but I was a fan forever. So much so, I even named my dog Snowman :-)

weren't they the pre cursors to AIC, Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden et al?

So I just watched That Little Ole Band From Texas on NF which is a ZZ Top doc and its well worth the watch, especially if all you know is the 80's MTV era songs.

They recorded this live version of their song Brown Sugar (not to be confused with the Stones version) and its awesome.
It was recorded at Gruene Hall which is a famous old dance hall from the 1800's in Texas that still operates today as a music epicenter.

And those videos  :D

Seriously, thats kinda what I mean because some only know that era. It's actually quite interesting, and its discussed in the doc, but they built themselves as a blues rock band, departing from the ubiquitous traditional blues and just when they began to succeed, the MTV era hit and they reinvented themselves. Its interesting to see the evolution of bands in this manner.

After that post, I recalled a long while back I'd run across a website where a journalist slash sleuth discovered some of the MTV girls from back when, so I looked it up.

Here's a brief, easy read on the "Legs" girls

And a more in depth article from the original journalist (this is about the Legs girls, but he has articles on others on that site)

I'll participate once more with one I can't get out of my head lately:

For whatever reason, I've listened to this CD since 2003, but it's the only AFI CD I've ever listened to (I say for some reason, the reason is: nostalgia! surprise).

Yet, once a year, I'll be in a "I don't know what to listen to space," and that's when this one shines. And it's like, a one playthrough, "ah, that hit the spot," and wait until next year type of thing.

Even funnier is one of my friends from back in high school, when I texted him about this phenomenon, said "Haha, yup, just went through the phase in December so I'm good for a year," hahaha.

Anyways, for your enjoyment, AFI's This Celluloid Dream, from Sing the Sorrow.

I get that in the era it was easier for him than other artists like Ray Charles because of his color.  But that should not take from his ability to sing.  I personally believe Michal Jackson was a pedophile and R kelly is as well but I still sing along to Billy Jenne and I believe I can Fly.  So him copying the style and sound of ethnic music, if true, seems like a lesser crime to me.

A Graceful Fall from John Mellencamp in 2010.
This is such a great recording for a number of reasons. One is, Mellencamp had zero interest in recording for success of th album but for the love.
He traveled to several sites of old blues recordings such as Robert Johnson et al. He also recorded with a portable recorder and one microphone, just like the predecessors.
Thats cool to me and I really dig this tune.

So, I was full bore country at one time believe it or not. hell, I was even full on cowboy as we had a ranch in the family on my dad's side lol
That leads in to the part where I completely that genre when I heard Eruption in my freshman year.
Then, I went both ways soon after when country rebounded but then I left again when Billy Ray whatshisfuckface destroyed it with all his bullshit.
And now, last few years, Stapleton and a few others have regenerated my interest, to a degreased anyway.
In short, nice pick norm.
Title: Re: The 2020 Song A Day Thread

Other than Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, my view on country is limited. I really did enjoy the Dixie Chicks and still do, although they're probably more country lite and the genre in general disowned them when they spoke truths back in the early 2000s (and still do now). Heard a couple random songs I like here and there but those would mostly be considered arena country (This is How We Roll, Chicken Fried, That's My Kind of Night). Chris Stapleton has a sound I like. :)

Those are two good ones for sure. My dad was a George Jones fanatic so I grew up on the old country, Don Williams, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Tanya Tucker and the like.
Now not all those in that era were bad, I mean Alan Jackson for instance, to me, he is old school country even though his music mostly isn't. he just has those values and aura of the old time. Dwight Yoakum, my cuz, Lee Roy Parnell ;-) et al all had some good contributions to the otherwise city slicker country.

Never was a fan of the Dixie Chicks and not for THAT reason lol I think initially they were more country before Maines joined up and went contemporary but I could be wrong. But yea, them, the likes of Shania Twain (whom I liked) all the 90's stuff had its time.

You know why this is here.
This album was really good, especially coming out of the gates with Hagar's first post Roth album.
Some good work on this record but I think the title track is a good song with an amazing guitar solo, and that's saying soemthing when talking EVH.
I also believe this tune showcases Alex's talents on the drums as well.
