Title: oh you didnt know?
Post by: Crewe on January 18, 2018, 12:20:38 PM
I know we are all have useless trivial facts locked away for no reason at all, so might as well dump them here.

Ill start with this:
Harold Ramis ended up selecting Kenny Loggins to write the theme song for Caddyshack which was of course, "I'm Alright."
But did you know he originally wanted Pink Floyd to write and perform one or more songs to play over the opening and closing credits?
No? Well, now you do.
Pink Floyd had just released The Wall an declined.
Oh and as an aside, Don Rickles was originally cast as Al Czervik (Dangerfield's character) and I think he would have worked just as well.

Something I had read a year or two ago and didn't know about: apparently the actors in Alien didn't know about the chest-burster scene, so when it did happen that really was them flipping out.

And in Die Hard (aka the greatest Christmas movie ever), that scene at the end where Hans Gruber falls? They released him a second before they told him it was going to be, so Alan Rickman's look of shock was real as well.

The scene in Alien: Resurrection when Sigourney Weaver nails the basketball shot behind her back without looking? That actually happened.

Didnt know the first bit, did know the second one. Wasn't it something like they told him "...on three" and dropped him on "two?"

You can look it up on Youtube, they included the behind the scenes footage on the DVD but it's available on YouTube. Worth it just for Ron Pearlman's reaction.

So, some Facebook page posted that above teaser, and my girlfriend tagged me in the comments. She assumed it meant a new season of Dexter was being made, I guess for Netflix (as Netflix has been known to revive old shows from time to time). But she never tried to verify it.

And after a short google search (because, lets be honest, this should be first page of search news) I can't find anything to validate it. So I believe it is a fake.

Along the lines of my earlier Aliens: Resurrection post, this is one of my favorite behind the scenes stories. From Multiplicity, the comedy in which Michael Keaton creates 2 clones of himself (and then one of the clones creates a third):

In filming the shot in which Doug #1 introduces Doug #3 to Doug #2, Doug #2 tosses a beer to Doug #1. Michael Keaton catching the beer (tossed by a body double) was shot first. Keaton tossing the beer (this time *to* a body double) was filmed later. Keaton's toss so perfectly matched the body double's original toss, that the planned special effect of digitally erasing the tossed beer can then adding in a digital beer can was not needed, thereby saving the production quite a bit of money. This was referred to by the special effects crew as "The Million Dollar Miracle Beer Can Toss".

Debra Winger was cast in the lead of A League of Their Own, but dropped out when Madonna signed on to the project.
I find this interesting because I believe Winger would've been better than Geena Davis.

I think I've heard this, or maybe I'm thinking of Al Pacino or, I think even Burt Reynolds (maybe I'm mixing into Indiana Jones auditions now).

Can you imagine Christopher Walken as Han Solo now? That's just...so weird.

It was Burt Reynolds, and since The Godfather is fresh on our minds, here's another tidbit about Burt turning down the role of Michael Corleone:
Brando said he would quit if Reynolds was involved to which Burt replied with, Im flattered he was upset.

Oh and don't forget Stallone was offered the Solo role as well, yo

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO kiddo flies home the morning of the 5th, totally would've taken him to see that.

Before I left MB, the local theater there would do "Flashback Cinema." Every Sunday and Wednesday at like, 11 AM I think, they'd show an old movie. Kiddo tells me that the past year they basically just played the same movies as that first year, so at least I don't really feel like I've missed anything. But they'd play Aliens, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade, among others (Oooo, the first Michael Keaton Batman movie too. That was an awesome one to take kiddo to see in the theater).

They were cheaper than Fathom events, but not as big of a selection. The theater must've made a deal specifically for those movies or something.

that stinks the kiddo's going back that day....maybe negotiations for an extra day are in order. Certainly a valid reason in miming ;-)
Yea, there's always some culture fest revitalizing older flicks around town, fun stuff.

So here's a fun one my fiance told me about last night. Some of you (um, well...Crewe) will probably remember this, whereas I had no freaking clue considering the timeframe.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willowbrook_State_School

The Willowbrook State School, which, I'm told, was an inspiration for Season 2 of American Horror Story (Asylum). The school, a real school located on Staten Island, was meant to aid children with intellectual disabilities. Instead, unveiled by an investigative journalist by the name of Geraldo Rivera, it was found out that the conditions were more or less sub-human, the children were mistreated, barely fed, and even experimented upon. Ten years later, the school closed and the children who were too old for foster care just sort of lingered on the grounds or the woods behind.

Additionally, there's a tunnel system underneath (so doctors and orderlies could easily travel through the school when it was functional) that became home to many of these people.

Born from this was the legend of Cropsey, an escaped mental patient who lived in the woods and murdered children. He was often depicted as having a hook for a hand.

However, it turns out Cropsey was much more than an urban legend. Andre Rand, formerly a janitor at the school, was accused of abducting five children and later sent to prison for kidnapping one. Jennifer Schweigert, a 12 year old girl with Downs Syndrome, went missing in 1987. She was found buried in the woods behind the school, and Rand's campsite was found not far away. He was eligible for parole in 2008, but before that, he was convicted on another kidnapping charge. He is now eligible in 2037, when he will be 93.

Honestly, the whole thing is terrifying, but then there's this undercurrent with the tunnels. There was basically a society down there, and it's said to be the site of Satanic rituals. There are those who believe Rand kidnapped the children and passed them through the tunnel system, as tribute to the Satanic cult for their sacrifice rituals. Who knows how real that is, but the whole thing is so unreal it all becomes believable.

I had nightmares last night.

I dont think I did know about this institution. I remember looking up those types of hospitals after seeing AHS S2 because it was so fascinatingly disturbing, but if I read about this, Ive since purged it from my memory.
I dont recall reading about this in the 80's so I cant grasp how big of a deal it was by then, but still, man, that's beyond fucked up.

So I'm listening to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours...I knew about some of the drama behind the scenes of this album, but I didn't know just how much was going on. I only really knew about the stuff between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham...I just found out that "You Make Loving Fun" was about Christine McVie finding someone new after her marriage with her husband the bassist ended. This album is almost a prime example of why you don't date people you work with.  ;D

I did enjoy the little tidbit that "Dreams" off of that album (the one telling Stevie Nicks' side of the story) charted higher than "Go Your Own Way"...matter of fact it was Fleetwood Mac's only #1 Billboard hit.

On a side note, for any of you that use Spotify on your phone (or PS4), the Genius "Behind the Lyrics" that'll pop up for certain songs is awesome. Quite informative.

A gender reveal party is a thing? I just learned about this...celebration?
So the doc gives an envelope with the sex of the unborn to a specified person (not husband or wife) then everyone spends an ungodly amount of money on both pink and blue crapola. Then you have the big reveal with confetti guns and all the accompanying excess...seems, unnecessary to me
THEN you still have the bridal shower and all that jazz.....
None for me, thanks

It was a gender reveal party that led to the California wildfire this year, or so I read. They like, blew something up and something blue or pink was supposed to come out, but, pyrotechnics plus Cali plus drought.................

Anyways. I'm not one to judge people's preferences, do whatever makes you happy, and outside of the example above, it doesn't cause anyone harm. It seems like an excuse to me to, what, get more gifts (do you do a baby shower AND a gender reveal?) and inconvenience friends, but I'm also a curmudgeon.

Although, it does seem inconvenient when trying to select gifts, but, again, I likely just lack imagination.

I had a frustrating discussion with friends about men v women in sports recently. Ill seriously truncate the minutes of said interaction, however, my detractors were illuminated to something they did not know, and that is this;
While they so lovingly, and tauntingly cling to Bille jean King beating Bobby Riggs in a battle of the sexes match, they overlook or did not know a myriad of other similar instances that does anything but support their argument.
We can discuss all the restrictions the men faced in said matches, but for the sake of brevity:
Bobby Riggs thrashed No. 1 ranked 29 year old (he was 55) Margaret Court months priorate the BJK match. And this is the legendary Margaret Court.
In 1993, five years senior to his opponent, Jimmy Connors beat perhaps the most decorated individual tennis has ever known in Martina Navratilova while only being allowed one serve among other things.
The best is this though, the world famous Williams sisters mouthed off that they could beat any man ranked over 200.
Karsten Braasch, ranked 203, accepted the challenge and easily disposed of both sisters, back to back in the same afternoon.
Afterward, the sisters revised their challenge stating they woud now beat any man ranked beyond 350.

Ran across this article regarding the question, will drinking a hot beverage on a hot day cool you down?

https://zidbits.com/2013/05/does-drinking-something-hot-on-a-hot-day-cool-you-down/

Drinking something hot on a hot day can indeed cool you down, but there is a catch. A study done at the University of Ottawa's School of Human Kinetics showed that if you were to drink a hot beverage in a hot and dry environment, your body will overcompensate for the added heat by sweating, and sweating a lot. It's this excessive sweating that causes your body to cool down, and cooling it down more than if you had drunk something cold instead.

I had this question solved for me many many years ago by the always available, Cliff Clavin (:45)

Michael Imperioli (Christopher Moltisanti) and Steve Schirripa (Bobby Bacala) will have a Sopranos podcast drop this April.
It will air one episode a week which will follow the series in order.
I think Imperioli will be the driving force as he directed, wrote and produced episodes and his character was a main player throughout but Schirripa should have some great input as well.
This is a terrific opportunity for a rewatch. Even though I just finished one a couple of months ago, I might be ready to go yet again.
There's a promo for the show in the link and one thing I kinda hear that I hope Im wrong about is Schirripa seems like an interrupter.
Nothing kills conversations to me faster than constant interruptions. I mean, a show can still survive but its annoying to me. Office Ladies is a prime example of this, they are terrible at interviews.
That said, Im really looking forward to this show...

Welp, definitely need to tell my dad about this.

I watched Sopranos on and off, because my parents watched it but I was younger back then so wasn't as interested. I can't remember which season I finally started watching regularly (want to say....3 or 4? But with my cruddy memory it was probably just like, season 2 and I only missed the first). I'd like to go back and rewatch, but I wanna do Boardwalk Empire again first.

I hear you about interrupters though. I am, admittedly, an interrupter in normal conversation, and it's something I want to try to work on with the cast I intend to do.

This would be perfect timing for you to become submerged in Sopranoland. Hard to argue with having another go at Boardwalk though.

Interrupting in person is bad, but on a podcast, to me at least, it's exponentially worse because Im thinking, I wanted to hear what that fuck had to say and now I never will. In person, you can at least get the information albeit not when initially offered

has anyone else noticed that some adds on Youtube are now 6 seconds long?

Just don't watch three in a row ....666 its a proctor gamble satanic indoctrination tactic.  LOL

lol never thought of that, but also, wouldn't sit through a video where I had to endure three ads, although I do have to sit through two at a time sometimes now

Been using Chrome and ad-block for years, so haven't seen a single ad on YouTube (keep your capitalist BS out of my video viewing, losers). Always startled me a bit when I'm forced to use it on a different browser at other places and those ads pop up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How did I not know this?
Maybe I did and just had my Chong on, so I forgot? lol
Ivan Reitman conceived Stripes as a Cheech and Chong vehicle. Cheech and Chong's manager thought the script was very funny; however, the comedy duo wanted complete creative control, so Reitman told the screenwriters to rewrite it for Bill Murray and Harold Ramis.

W. Earl Brown who portrayed Dan Dority on Deadwood was also Mary's brother Warren in There's Something About Mary

If this seems out of nowhere and odd, it's because Im rewatching Deadwood now and thinking of him as Warren cracks me up.

FYI, since I just watched the French Connection again, Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken was named after the Gene Hackman character Popeye Doyle
