So far its getting ripped by reviewers.

Sega, re release the genesis like Nintendo did, but add a cartridge slot. Don't add bloat/crapware on it. You are killing the genesis image it once had.

A cartridge slot can be pretty expensive, especially if you start making repro carts to sell alongside it.  The reason that none of these retro cons have cartridge slots in them is because a cartridge slot can easily cost $20 or more, especially since you know they're going to put their stupid copyright protection crap in there with region lock.  Even though this is a console that's been dead for 20 years (or in the Genesis' case, 16 years, not even joking the last official game came out in 2001), they still feel the need to include region locking and all that jazz.

So rather than make the console cost $100, they just don't include a cartridge port.  The real failing is that they also don't include an online store to buy more games.  You should be able to put in your own SD card or thumb drive and download a bunch of games for say $4 a game (if Steam is anything to go by).  But they don't do that of course because they're concerned that you might buy it and then upload their games and other people will download them, and then .. etc.  An easy solution to that would be integration with a DRM platform (such as Steam), but instead they have this backward idea about digital distribution and fear it, not embrace it.

If you want a cartridge slot, check out one of the many options that third-parties make, take note of their fairly expensive price tag.  Composite out for people who want to play on CRT, cartridge slots, USB ports, etc are part of the reason they're so expensive.  When something isn't being mass produced and used on a regular basis, there's no reason for fabricators to get the prices down for the OEM.

Cartridge slot expensive? AT games throws them on just about every system.  The Sega system that was reviewed had a slot 2 wireless controllers for 79. The same price as the snes with out a slot. I agree though, no online access to buy more games is stupid on their part. The previous one with a slot was 49. You can find retro consoles around here at various stores with 3 to 7 cartridge slots ranging from 29 to 99 bucks.  No homebrewing a slot, I doubt i would do that but yes you can pick those up for 10 to 40 bucks. But I would be buying one, not 6 million.

this thing has 3 cartridgfe slots, and 3 different inputs for 56 bucks.

I am sure Nintendo can buy say like 6 million cartridge slots for the cheap. the console could still cost the same price.

If Hyperkin can make these with this many options and retail for 60 bucks i am sure Nintendo can churn a profit also.

If I remember right, people had criticisms of the Retron because it would literally transfer the save data from the cartridge onto the console, and getting your save data back onto cartridge proves to be annoying.
