Chit Chat / Re: The Movies Thread
June 30, 2023, 02:42:28 PM
Typically if I see a movie, it's usually been out for a while now.

Movies we've watched of late, Bronson -- Tom Hardy nails the character to a T, though I wasn't expecting to see his Bronson in the first 5 minutes of the film. The Greasy Strangler watched this one because of RedLetterMedia a long while ago, I remember it almost made me vomit. We watched it again recently, and again it almost made me vomit. My best friend was absolutely disturbed and traumatized, and that just made us laugh all the more about it. Sometimes we threaten to put on the Greasy Strangler again, and his visceral reaction is just awesome.

At some point we watched The Apocalypse Trilogy which is an unofficial nickname for John Carpenter's films. I can't remember if it was The Thing, Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness, or if it was They Live, PoD and ITMOM. I just assume it's The Thing. I forced them to watch my favorite film, Casablanca, which they didn't seem to mind too much. Falling Down which is just great, one of my friends has utter contempt for the film and calls it overrated, but he doesn't show up to movie nights either, so I can just ignore his opinions anyway.

We watched The Exorcist and The Exorcist III: Legion. Legion is a favorite of mine, the first Exorcist film is decidedly alright, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it. George C Scott is fantastic. We watched 1408, I'm not really a fan of Stephen King, but I like 1408 and the original 90s IT TV film. The Lighthouse with Robert Pattinson and Willem Defoe is good of course.

And of course you can't do a movie night group without watching Fight Club and American Psycho, they are absolutely required viewing. We've watched a lot of found footage films of late, most of them were from my own catalogue of films, but we watched one I'd never seen before The Borderlands, which is not about psycho mutants in a Mad Max style wasteland, but instead about psycho catholic priests in an Irish wasteland, absolutely dreadful ending. Guests of honor: [The Blair Witch], [Lake Mungo], [The Tunnel], [As Above, So Below].

We watched The Evil Dead 1 and 2, haven't watched Army yet, then we'll get into the new ones (which I don't much care for, but c'est la vie). We watched White Noise with Michael Keaton still doing his Batman routine. Dishonorable mention: Wish Upon, to hell with that movie.

We watched through the original Ring movies, I didn't mind most of them, but the last two [Black/White] I hated with a passion. We'll get to Ju-On eventually. Parasite Eve was okay, but is based on the novel so it was unfamiliar to us. Kairo (also called Pulse) is decent, but the ending is crazy.

We watched RedLetterMedia's The Recovered and Gorilla Interrupted. I like them, but I understand why they tell people not to watch them. Liked the followup film How not to make a movie where they recount how they made Gorilla, and how Mike Stoklassa came to hate Garrett Gilchrist. Totally deserved enmity, in my opinion. Especially considering the stories he's been telling about them behind their backs. Not related to movies, though, moving on.

Blade Runner is awesome, nuff said. We watched The Final Cut, but I'm gonna make them watch the Theatrical Cut soon. Harrison Ford's horrible narration must be witnessed.

We watched The Call of Cthulhu and The Whisperer in Darkness, both by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society. Great films, both made in black and white to hide the lack of budget (Call of Cthulhu is actually a silent film too). They used digital film grain, since the movies were shot on digital, which is always a drag, but it is what it is. A while ago we watched The Lurking Fear, which is just awful. My friend requested a film Macario which is a Mexican film about mortality. Not really my thing, didn't care for it.

Oh right, also we watched The Menu with Anya-Taylor Joy. Good film, but we had a guest viewer and he just wouldn't stop asking me to tell him what happens next in the plot, it's like shut up and watch, the plot will happen in good time.

I find myself not really a fan of much in the way of new content. Maybe it's just me being my usual stubborn self, maybe I just reject modernity when it comes to content, I don't know (nor do I really concern myself with it). I've been rewatching The X-Files with a group of my friends, and one of the things I've noticed is my growing contempt for the show. When I was younger, I loved the series. When I watched through it last time, it was with someone else that I no longer associate with, and even then, some of the episodes ground my gears all wrong.

Yesterday we watched Humbug and The Calusari. Humbug is one of my favorites, whereas the Calusari I absolutely despise. And as much as I like the concept of the series, as fondly as I think of the series, I kind of only really like the first season. Some of my favorite episodes are not in the first season, but the first season has some of my favorites, like Ice and Darkness Falls, Jersey Devil. Of course it has Tooms, a villain I didn't really like. We're finally coming to an end to season 2, we should have been way beyond season 2, but like a prick I've put off watching X-Files with them and instead we watched other stuff. But like a bad case of leprosy, it's just kind of dangling out there, ready to fall off, so finally I shrugged and we're going to finish season 2. Only 9 more to go! Seasons 6-9 are just god awful, and season 10/11 are thankfully short. I haven't even seen the final season, to be honest, the revival series filled me with the same dread I had for Twin Peaks: The Return, and just like Twin Peaks' revival series, I didn't much care for what I saw in s10.

Reinvestigated some old series that they don't even play anymore on TV, like Spicy City and First Wave. They're both a bit rough around the edges, but they're not the worst. First Wave reminds me of The Outer Limits (90s revival series) where they throw in sex scenes, but it was regular network TV, so any nudity was always off-screen. I hate those scenes for the same reason I hate nudity in an HBO series, it's just not content I ever cared for in TV.

We watched the original Ghost Adventures "documentary", and then the first season of the show. Yeah, don't do that. Usually I have a pretty strong tolerance for crap, but I'm a hard skeptic and that one just made me want to punch holes in the wall. Zak Bagans is like Adam Sandler, if you get joy out stupid, you might like it.

PC Gaming / Re: Cyberpunk 2077

A game that took 7+ years to make and doesn't really resemble the original concept could never live up to the hype. See: Duke Nukem Forever, Final Fantasy XV

The greatest value that CP2077 has provided to the world is the memes it generated. It doesn't help that woke politics went so heavily into the game that they added in a genital slider, adding in features to appeal to a part of the audience that doesn't even exist. Nobody asked for or needed that.

Reviews / Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The only Star Wars movie I've ever seen whose reviews went down over time.  Started off at a 96% with an audience score of 60%, now it has a review score of 90% and an audience score of 50% on rotten tomatoes.  For comparison's sake, this movie has a lower score than any of the prequel trilogy films.  Mickey Mouse has done it, they've tanked the Star Wars Saga!

Edit: I should specify, I mean audience score.  The score that actually DOES matter, because you can't buy the audience's reviews.

Embarrassed to admit I like?  Don't really have any songs that fit that descriptor, typically if I like a song, I like it without reservation.  I guess in certain contexts there can be songs where I wouldn't want to show someone I like it, but that's more along the lines of not wanting an individual to judge you more than anything else.

I was flabergasted as to why the hell the "new human torch" looked like a black and white Spiderman, only to find out that it actually is friggin Spiderman.  Marvel doing whatever they can to try and drum up interest in F4, I guess.

Marvel studios has already mentioned that Deadpool and Xmen are coming into the fold.  The good news is we will finally get a good FF?
I think there'll never be a good FF.  The cartoons were never successful either.  It's just the lineup is so bland.  They each have one or two powers, and they're pretty stupid as far as powers go.

Mickey Mouse just keeps insisting that it wants to ruin things I like.  If I stop liking something, they'll find something else I like to ruin.

I don't have a top 5 games of 2017, because I don't even know what came out this year.  Everything I've been playing has been out for some time.  I recently got back into Warframe, played a lot of Terraria, some Payday 2 and for the most part all the stuff I've been looking forward to already came out, or isn't coming out this year.  I guess the one game I was looking forward to was Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City, but then I didn't even play that particular DLC.  So whatever.

So...out at Best Buy with my brother yesterday, and decided to take a look at the Nintendo Switch because a friend of mine has been talking it up like crazy lately. Look right above it to see what kind of games it has, and I don't see any...but I do see about 10 of the Classics.  :o This was the Christmas gift I had in mind for my brother, and here it is...and my brother has to be standing here too.

Of course I picked it up. A little Loki-style trickery and he'll be none the wiser that this was for him all along.  8)

Still can't believe I found one of these.

Never shop with the guy you're still shopping for. :D

The bargain bin / Re: Free Games for Steam or GOG

Hrm...  Top 5?  I hadn't even thought of a top 5...  I guess if I were to go with a service-by-service list, I'd go with:

--GOG--
5. Dead Cells (25% off, $14.29) https://www.gog.com/game/dead_cells
4. Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut (50% off, $12.49) https://www.gog.com/game/assassins_creed_directors_cut
3. Heroes of Might and Magic Bundle (84% off, $10) https://www.gog.com/promo/20171121_black_friday_homm_bundle
2. Ultima Bundle (74% off, $10) https://www.gog.com/promo/20171121_black_friday_sale
1. Project Highrise (75% off, $6) https://www.gog.com/game/project_highrise

I been playing Project Highrise lately, it's like someone finally said "you know what game didn't get enough love?  Sim Tower!" and so they made this to fill that niche.  Hard to argue with a 75% off there.  And I picked up the Might and Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic, and Ultima Bundles cause they might be old, but they definitely ain't bad.  Assassin's Creed was a game that was somewhat fun, a lot of people retroactively hate on it because it didn't have the flash of 2, but I liked it well enough.  And I haven't heard an end to the praise for Dead Cells from anyone, people really like that one, though you might want to wait for a better sale price, 25% off ain't a huge deal.

--Steam--
5. Cluster Truck (70% off, $5)
4. Stellar Overload (40% off, $12)
3. Turok Bundle (72% off, $11)
2. Friday the 13th (50% off, $20)
1. Batman Arkham games (75%, $5)

Cluster Truck is fun, it's fast and it's ridiculous.  And that's what makes it great.  You leap from the back of semi truck to semi truck to avoid hitting the ground, cause you know, going 150 mph and hitting the ground is gonna mess you up.  Stellar Overload is like a weird mish mash of No Man's Sky, Minecraft, and the such only this game tries to emulate the gravity of a real planet, so go too far in one direction and you'll end up on another face of the cuboid planetoids.  Some people say digging underground can be a little confusing (because you keep flipping your view), but the devs are trying to fix things like that.  Turok is awesome, who doesn't want to hunt dinosaurs?  Friday the 13th, I keep hearing praise from my friend who wants me to get it, and I might just do that at 50% off...  And of course, you all know how awesome the Batman games are.

Okay, I get that you might have not hated this movie.  But it's no secret that DC's failed movie attempts for the last 10 years have been failures.  They're trying so hard to copy the Marvel in the most formulaic fashion, it's a real surprise that they haven't just tried to merge the movie brands together where Iron Man and Superman end up in a fight.  This movie is considered ANOTHER failure, the only movie that's worked in the DC Cinematic Universe thus far is Wonder Woman.  DC is where movie studios have been for the last 20 years, thinking there's a formula to guarantee a movie's success.  The right actor, the right costume, the right hit song just before the third act with the giant metal spider...

The new X-Men movies have Quicksilver doing this Deus Ex Machina crap, where he moves so fast that everything else is halted and we watch things at a super fast speed.  It's something different for a superhero movie because traditionally you wouldn't see this, you would just see him zipping by and being fast.  It's not conventional.  The FBI scene in Daze of Future Pants, the Mansion Rescue, and even the Apocalypse fight.

Rather than make things traditionally where the Flash is just seen as doing things fast, they decide to try and copy the Quicksilver scenes with super slow mo that only The Flash can move at.  And it's no surprise that Superman watching The Flash with his eyes struck people as being the same as Apocalypse spotting Quicksilver, and how they both countered the super speed with their own power which is at normal speed.  The Avengers had a Quicksilver too, and they didn't copy the X-Men version, they went with traditional Quicksilver where he's just so fast you can't really see him moving.  You can interpret that any way you want, but people aren't just being misguided when they say that DC is really doing their best to try and throw crap at the wall and see what sticks.  Hell, I can even understand why people would compare Cyborg to Iron Man.  In the comics Cyborg doesn't fly, he doesn't have that ability.  But yet in this movie .. yeah, it looks like Iron Man has been copied in another formulaic attempt.  We need to make him quippy, and witty, and brilliant like Tony Stark, because we don't have that in our Cinematic Universe...

People are making the comparisons because it's easy to make them when a company continues to try and copy the competition in desperation.  Because thus far the DCCU is a giant money hole.

Saw Justice League. I hated Batman vs. Superman but loved Wonder Woman. I went into this with super low expectations but actually came away from it pretty surprised. It wasn't a great movie, but it was entertaining and provided some good laughs. A few corny lines and the story had some weird points to it, but overall I laughed quite a bit and there were some insanely cool parts.

Spoiler
Absolutely loved the scene when Superman was fighting the Justice League. Showed how incredibly powerful he truly is. When The Flash is trying to get around him while he's holding off the other three, and Superman just slowly turns his head to watch The Flash...my god that was one of the most badass moments I've seen.
Yeah, it was pretty impressive when they did that same scene in X-Men Apocalypse first.  :D
