Title: NBA 2K19
Post by: TheNorm on January 09, 2019, 09:17:10 AM
It was on sale for cheap last week on the Playstation Store and I haven't played it in a couple of seasons, so I thought now would be a good time to pick the game up. Not disappointed. I always felt this game rivaled the MLB series in regards to atmosphere, and the MyCareer mode (think Road to the Show) with the story and immersing you into that life is something RTTS should aspire to.

This time the MyCareer mode starts off with a prelude of sorts, where your created player decides to leave school a little too early and ends up starting his career in the Chinese league.

Still getting used to the controls since it's been awhile, but the game plays a great game of basketball. Worth a look if you're needing a hoops game and can find it at a discounted rate.

The path I chose in regards to this franchise-maybe picking it up once every couple of years-is something I may seriously consider doing for other sports titles in the future. This isn't a knock on 2K at all, as a matter of fact, as far as sports titles go this team does an amazing job with the NBA product. I wish EA (and to some extent, SCEA with MLB) would put this much work into their sports franchises as much as 2K does here.

The reason I may go this route going forward is simply because this game just feels fresh, and less like a roster update with minor tweaks like other sports titles are notorious for feeling like.

Any thoughts?

haven't played any of the 2k basketball series so I don't have an opinion.
However, I can say, the simple roster update for $65 bucks got old fast. That said, I still succumb to MLB despite such little attention to RTTS (my focus) sans last year.

I could not blame you for going that route.  I always wait for black Friday and just pick it up then for 30-40 so I don't feel I am paying to much for a roster update.  I will say that 2k puts a lot of work into the game and there is always more than just a roster update in most game modes.  If all you do is play one mode then I could see every other year as the way to go.

Did you play any my league?  the feature I have enjoyed the most that was added this year is the ability to use prior draft classes.  I am trying to draft all the 80's celtics onto my expansion team. Its been fun.

Been meaning to try that mode but I've been having so much fun with MyCareer so far I haven't even ventured to MyLeague yet. It's on my radar though.

FTR, I created a 6'1" PG focused on Playmaking/Passing & 3-pt shooting. Signed with the Houston Rockets after the Prelude story finished since they offered the most in salary. Currently have him up to an 88 OVR.

Yeah, mostly I just don't, as far as the yearly goes. MLB I waited 2 years, 16 and 18. The rest I have are Madden and NHL 16, FIFA 14, and now that I have PS Plus back I think I can get NBA 2K16 back from when it was the free game. And I'm good with that.

MLB is the only game I buy semi-regularly.

Madden is every other or every three years buy for me at this point. MLB is hit and miss.  I had access to the alpha this year and might pick it up.  NHL, FIFA are nevers for me.

I apparently had alpha access for MLB 19 and NEVER saw the notification until the other day. I am very upset about this.

Had to guard Steph Curry when the Rockets played the Warriors in MyCareer...I use the term 'guard' loosely, because the dude is as tough in this videogame as he is in real life lol. Entire team is as tough as they come.  :o

Currently have the Rockets advanced to the Western Conference Finals as the #1 seed (also finished with the best record overall), to face the Golden State Warriors in what is pretty much the battle for the NBA Championship. The top two seeds advanced in the East as well, with Boston against Toronto (I think).

Haven't started Game 1 yet simply because I'm not looking forward to having to check Steph Curry for at least the next four games, even if we did take the season series from them.

The deluxe edition of this was on sale for like, $4 a couple of weeks ago. A friend alerted me to it. I haven't played much, got a PG that got drafted by the Lakers that I've played like.....maybe 6 games with, and a Center who got drafted by....someone and then traded to the Knicks who I think I've played a game with.

Bartolemy Schnuggenfitz and Smelly Finelli.

Also have a WNBA played just named Hannah Hanna, but I've only created her.

$4? For a 2019 game that doesn't suck?
Ive always wanted to try a basketball game but they all sucked in my heavy gaming days.

I saw somewhere that MLB 19 was already $39 at Target, but when I checked the PS Store it was still $60, so I was about to jump, but nah.
I guess the store doesn't come down in price that quickly, if at all.

Yeah, it was an insane sale, my brother and I ended up buying it even though we don't normally play NBA games. I've barely played it, like I said, but it seems good at least and it's a nice break every now and again. I like having a game for all 4 sports, even if the only one I REALLY care about is MLB.

So this makes MLB 18, Madden 16, FIFA 14, NHL 16 and NBA Live 19 for me, haha.

I event touched NHL in a few years either, I think it became sort of stagnant too.
I would love for all my sports games to be games of the year so I could Madden, NHL and MLB and NBA all flipping year lol

In real life, I love Steph Curry's game. But in this game, I hate guarding him and playing his team in general lol.

Western Conference Finals, Game 1
Golden State - 98, Houston - 93

Led by Steph Curry's 35 points, the Warriors take home court advantage from the Rockets in a game that went back and fourth in the final quarter. Golden State led by 10 at the half, but Houston was able to rally back in the second half off of N. Ryan's 14 points and Harden's 12. Rockets even briefly held the lead late in the 4th, but couldn't hold on. With 20 seconds remaining and the Warriors holding a slim one point lead, Curry found Kevin Durant in the corner for a back breaking 3-pointer that the Rockets couldn't overcome. Game 2 scheduled for my next day off, that KD trey at the end hurt me a bit lol

Lol

Houston can't beat GS in any fashion lol

Western Conference Finals, Game 2
Golden State - 81, Houston - 88

Despite 20 first half points from the Warriors Kevin Durant, the Rockets used a strong defensive second half to overcome a 12 point halftime deficit to tie up the series at one game a piece. Houston was paced by Carmelo Anthony's 24 points, and rookie PG Norm Ryan continued his strong postseason with 14 points and 11 assists.

These games have been a challenge but they're fun lol...thought for sure we were done for when GS was up 13 mid-3rd quarter.

Western Conference Finals, Game 3
Houston - 95, Golden State - 89

Led by rookie PG Norm Ryan's 19 points and 9 assists, the Rockets were able to take back home court advantage and take a 2-1 series lead. The game featured 11 lead changes and was not decided until the final 30 seconds. The Warriors Steph Curry went for 28 2nd quarter points but went cold in the second half. Game 4 scheduled for my next day off.

The reason I can only play one of these games at a time is because they've been so intense lol.

Western Conference Finals, Game 4
Houston - 97, Golden State - 71

Norm Ryan was again the catalyst for the Rockets with 24 points and 7 assists. The two time defending champion Golden State Warriors now find themselves on the brink of elimination. James Harden also chipped in 21 points in the blowout victory that had Warriors fans heading for the exits with plenty of time left in the 4th quarter. The Rockets were lethal from 3 point land, going 16 of 21 beyond the arc.

Western Conference Finals, Game 5
Golden State - 89, Houston - 99

The Rockets clamped down on defense in the 4th quarter and were able to punch their ticket to the NBA Finals! James Harden scored 31 points while Clint Capela chipped in 18, more than enough to offset Kevin Durant's 28. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, typically lethal from beyond the arc, were cold in the last two games of this series. Rockets PG Norm Ryan had only 10 points, but also had 8 assists.

Houston will now face the Eastern Conference Champion Toronto Raptors, who beat the Boston Celtics in 7 games.

All it took for the Rockets to make the Finals is a change in PG and Chris Paul riding the pine lol

You know what's fun? Dribbling out the clock in a Game 5, your team up by 20 and seconds away from winning an NBA Championship, and then you get a "2KSports is having trouble connecting to the server" before being booted back out to the main menu. Then when you jump back in, the entire game you just played is gone from the system and you're right back at the pregame show before Game 5. Real treat.  >:(  >:(

On the plus side, in the replay of Game 5 I erased the 5 turnovers I had the first time around and the game was pretty much over by halftime.

Yours truly is your NBA Finals MVP for the Houston Rockets, averaging a double-double with 19.8 points and 10.2 assists.

Somewhat disappointing is that once you hit the offseason where it highlights who won awards (Steph Curry was league MVP, while I made All-Rookie Second Team), the game jumps straight to the following season without even highlighting who may have moved around in the offseason. Really hope that's not how it is in other modes as well, because I was really looking forward to trying my hand at MyLeague with some custom rosters and an undecided draft class.

well that sucks.
Why connecting to servers in single player though?

I don't like jumping right into the next season either. The Show goes through an offseason cycle displaying retirees, HOF members and the like. Pretty cool.

I enjoyed it but YMMV lol. Cheaper than a Starbucks coffee. Online community is pretty robust too so even if MyCareer isn't your thing you can start a season with a whole bunch of customizable options. I almost started one where the draft included members of the 1993 draft class (Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway, etc) along with the draft class of last season. To be fair I didn't even know that was a possibility and I may have stumbled upon it by accident lol. But getting to start a league with players from different years would be awesome.

Thanks for the heads up!

Not sure how long this will last, but decided to start a MyLeague as the Pistons using a custom roster (which in turn means you have to start from Opening Night and not the offseason) and Player Lock on PG. Will probably sim a good portion of the season so that I can get to the 2019 NBA Offseason and draft, which thanks to a tear in the space/time continuum will feature the 2003 NBA Draft class. As GM of the Pistons I don't plan on drafting Darko Milicic again.

Currently have PG Reggie Jackson on the trading block, and still have not decided whether to add C Andre Drummond to that list. Looking to acquire shooters and picks because my team currently has no 2nd round picks the next two seasons (good lord Tom Gores is an idiot).

I always think about doing this in like MLB, but I'm such a control freak I don't like my players being in games, collecting positive or negative stats, and having 0 control over their performance.

It's only a video game, I shouldn't care so much, and yet.

I'm somewhat the same. I won't shorten the season, but I'm starting to get more to the point where I don't mind focusing on the managing/GM part and simming a good portion of the season out. Once I hit the playoffs (if I hit the playoffs) it's play every single one though. Same thing with NHL and MLB if I ever start up a franchise in those. NFL and NCAA Football are different in the sense that since the seasons are much shorter, I'll play them out.

As for the modes like MyCareer in this, RTTS in MLB though? I'll almost always play them all. Since it's only one player (mine) with skin in the game, I feel more of an attachment (and in an odd way responsibility) to make sure my player is developing as well as he can. This game was the first one in a very long time (MLB 17 maybe?) where I didn't sim out a single appearance: the Prelude, all 82 regular season games and 18 playoff games. The off the court stuff definitely helped as far as the immersion factor went, as did teams (as far as I could tell anyway) playing true to what they do in real life (and let me reiterate again just how much of a nightmare Golden State is to play against). Today was the first time I played with a team other than the Rockets, and it took a bit of time for me to adjust to how the Pistons play. I like that.

MyCareer was an absolute blast for me, especially once I leveled up my PG a bit. I could hold my own against some guards, and if I was matched up on a backup I tended to hold on to the ball more or call for my shot once I knew I was open. Guards I was evenly matched with (Lonzo Ball at the beginning, Jrue Holiday, Kemba Walker later), we could battle back and forth a bit. The elite guards like Steph, Russell Westbrook, Dame Lillard, and Uncle Drew though? I had to be on my game because any letdown typically led to me paying for it. Even when I was on it was more about limiting the damage because those guys were gonna get their points. Loved the challenge.

he very first thing I noticed I don't like is that you have to have an account to do the create a career?
That sucks.
Anytime I HAVE to sign up for some shit, I don't do it.
That said, I tinkered around with the game, and lemme just say if I was to create a guy, he'd have to be a short white guy because I just suck lol

I agree with you both on My Career and modes like it, Road to the Show, I play every game because of some weird sense of loyalty to my digital representative.  That is actually why I shorten the season in my league, I don't like to sim and feel like I did not "earn" the stats.  I usually start an expansion team, do the expansion draft and role from there.  The game saves all your team records so it's like I am starting my own thing not taking over someone else's.
