This Author describes the pros and cons of steam vs. GOG and why you should give it a try. I agree with the article and GOG is a favorite of mine.
The TL;DR version.

Although the author states that there are no achievements, but GOG is adding them. Its kinda of quirky, I have seen them pop up when playing but I cannot view after seeing them.

Also sometimes if your steam account is linked with GOG, if you have a game in your steam library, during sales they will show up in your GOG library. I have had 3 games pop up that way.

Also they may have that old game you loved back in the day but your cpu cant play it, well they fixed that usually with dosbox, but you can play some old school games that way.

I like both services, but I still prefer Steam.  GOG is definitely great because it's DRM-free, so in the case of games which launched with say SecuROM, they won't allow said games onto GOG unless the developer removes said DRM.  They have GOG galaxy, which is required for some of their games now, so it seems like GOG is slowly getting people attached to their service while integrating more games to require Galaxy to be installed anyway, thus the DRM-free part of GOG is kind of being slowly phased out.  Kind of like how Microsoft tends to target their competition and slowly edge them out until they deliver the killing blow and make something major dependent entirely on their stuff.  And I don't mind DRM on Steam so long as I know it's there (although, if I know a game has third-party DRM, I'm likely to not buy it).  Which is why Denuvo pisses me off, because I buy a game like Conan Exiles (still waiting on my friggin shirt...) and they basically hid the fact that Denuvo was there.

Just an FYI if you use both services, you can link your accounts, and GOG sometimes gives you a copy of steam games you own. You just have to link your steam account, and make steam profile public.
