Florida coach apparently isn't a fan of Jim Harbaugh.

https://twitter.com/NickdelaTorreGC/status/902199548340260865

Lol. I'm sure the coach that's won just about anywhere he's gone is having trouble staying relevant. Sorry McElwain, but you're the only one that can stay relevant by humping a shark.

https://twitter.com/OfficialCSO/status/885133281045487616

So...what are the odds Jim McElwain would wander upon these boards...slim to none, right? No reason, just asking for a friend.

He is a pretty good assitant, won 2 Natty's at Bama as an OC. Decent recruiter.

I'm not doubting that at all, and I'll take him over Tim Drevno running the offense any day of the week...it's just things have been said here and other places (mainly Twitter) by me by a friend, that's all.

There were some rumors that Michigan might be canceling the home-and-home with Washington, which I was absolutely dreading. Looks like they instead canceled their series with Virginia Tech, so for the moment Michigan is still scheduled to come here in 2020 and then we head there in 2021.

Norm, is it too early to book my flight to Michigan for 2021? Haha.

Not gonna lie, the first I'd heard about this was when Michigan canceled their VT series, and I'm glad they didn't cancel the Washington series. Others wanted it vice versa and while I get their reasoning (East Coast v. West Coast success, no need to play more than one P5 v. P5 non-conference matchup with the way the committee picks teams) I would rather Michigan and Washington play. Those two teams seemed to play a bit back in the day and I miss that.

Just come out for a game anyway lol.

Thai, just realized that it is Washington, not Wassu playing the barn this year. Surprised Auburn scheduled that one but I bet it was before UW got good though. I am going to be the biggest Husky fan that day. Since it is at a neutral field you should not see the riff raff that is auburn football. Those fans will actually be ok. Unfortunately those aren't the majority.

if you were going to their place I would say marvel at toilet paper in trees, and be prepared to be told you could not understand what its like to pull for a college football team, because only barners understand that shit, the rest of us don't have a clue.  Also Auburn will win because "WDE" and that is all you need to know.  Its funny to hear them talk shit about Clemson about how they made them and now they get their asses kicked by clemson.

I hope you guys beat them by 50.

Haha, yeah it should be interesting. It was actually only got scheduled in 2016 so it was pretty recent. Debating if I should actually make the trip out there or not. Last time I went to Atlanta to watch UW play a team from Alabama didn't go so well ;)

Absolutely zero excuses for them now...if the last game of the season isn't for the division championship and a spot in the Big Ten Championship, this season should be considered a failure. Anything less would be an unmitigated disaster.
It's year 4 for Harbaugh...time to put up or shut up.

Watching that game against MSU was so surreal. (2010) It was like we expected a fight and by the 4th qtr Saban was pissed his 4th stringers were scoring.  He was mad at MSU for not tackling on a dive up the middle play. Poor Jawlston Fowler was not sure what to do,  He knew it was supposed to be a 1 yard run but no one tackled him. I had seen more fight out of Georgia Southern than MSU that day. Thier forums were Hilarious, and the melt down was epic.

In honor of college football kicking off this week, here's a question: who would be on your favorite team/alma mater's "Mount Rushmore"? For example, I'll start:

Michigan

Charles Woodson
Desmond Howard
Anthony Carter
Tyrone Wheatley

...and my explanation for notable omissions:

Bo Schembechler - love the coach and he's an absolute legend, but I limited mine to players here. Right or wrong, that's what I'm sticking with.

Tom Brady - love Brady but those guys rate even higher for me. Dude was a clutch player but those four guys above you knew could change the game whenever they had the ball.

Jim Harbaugh - just missed the cut. Clutch QB with an insane will to win.

Bennie Oosterban/Tom Harmon/Fielding H Yost/Gerald Ford - no offense and disrespect to any of those guys but football in their day was different, and I never saw them play.

Between all the off the field stuff happening at MSU and OSU, Norm must be living in pure bliss right now.

Zach Smith having a fun meltdown on Twitter today: https://deadspin.com/zach-smith-is-having-a-public-meltdown-1828692941

Trying to gain control through aggressive outbursts is certainly not the sign of someone who's an abuser, let me tell you.

And more news from MSU, albeit related to an older event, but still not good on top of everything else they've got going on: https://deadspin.com/michigan-state-coach-was-texting-about-strip-clubs-befo-1828680993

Between MSU, OSU and Maryland just this year, can we go ahead and shut down college athletics? I don't think it's working anymore. Maybe just keep the female teams?

In honor of college football kicking off this week, here's a question: who would be on your favorite team/alma mater's "Mount Rushmore"?

Alabama

Derrick Thomas - All time sack leader.
Joe Namath - One of the first superstars of football, granted his stats were not great, but he was advertising everything.
Mark Ingram - First Heisman trophy for Bama
Derrick Henry - Another Heisman winner for Bama

Honorable Mentions:

Bart Starr - First Superbowl MVP
Kenny Stabler - NFL MVP
Shaun Alexander - I think he would have been Bama's first Heisman if he had not gotten injured, but became NFL MVP

I disagree. Namath was in an era completely unfriendly to QB's, but he still was at the top for quite a long time before injuries took its toll. He was a vertical passer, hence the hype and he was surprisingly elusive. He was more than stats and I wouldn't call his career lukewarm by any means.
Apologies if I misunderstood the posts.

I agree with both sentiments. His later years muddied his stats, he was a great QB early on, but i think he hung around to long and made his stats seem less than stellar.

Some thoughts and observations:

-The older I get, the more I tend to despise a good majority of every fanbase I'm a part of. Woof.

-New season, new S&C coaches, talk of new coordinators on offense...same old results. Offensive line is still swiss cheese. Shea Patterson is the real deal, but it's kind of hard for him to throw deep routes when he's running for his life about 1.5 seconds after the ball is snapped. If that doesn't improve it's going to be more of the same whenever they play a team with a defensive line worth a damn (Wisconsin, Penn State, ohio state, maybe MSU).

-Absolutely zero excuse for getting outcoached last night.
Title: Re: 2018 College Football Thread

I will give my thoughts and observations from this weekend.

I have never ever seen a QB as good as Tua in an Alabama uniform. Probably the only time I saw someone similar was Johnny Manziel.  My favorite quote (paraphrased of course) from  a reporter: "We are used to Bama beating teams over 4 quarters and choking teams out late, now they will just rip your heart out early and beat you to death. "

Our defense is not as good as last year, I know this sounds picky, but Louisville was wide open to many times.

Louisville will be a decent team this year. they are big and fast. I dont know their schedule, but they could win 8 to 9 games. I hope they win the ACC to make our SOS look good, but Clemson is elite.

Auburn is better than I feared, and when I watched the washington game, UW could not stop the DL from Auburn. That Nose guard for Auburn is a fucking beast damnit.  UW looked smaller than auburn.

FSU .... LOL Willie Taggart is making a living from one good season at USF.

Michigan WTF, that makes me sad. I hate Notre Dame.  Now we will hear how great Notre dame is until they get blown out of the playoffs. Ironically getting into the playoffs with out winning a conference title game, conference division,  and one less game than anyone else. All things people bitched about in 2011 and 2017.

The big 10 should ban App State from opening weekend in their conference.

your top 10 after week 1? Ranking plus a brief description if you want

Mine

#1 Bama (defending champs, good opening week against a good team)
#2 Clemson (played a nobody, took care of business)
#3 Auburn (Ugh, hate to admit it, but beat a good Washington team)
#4 OU (they churn and burn a score board)
-----------------------------------------------------
#5 UGA (played a nobody, took care of business)
#6 Notre Dame (Beat Michigan, but still looks good)
#7 West Virginia (looked good beating a bad UT team)
#8 OSU (Yeah they scored a lot of points, but good grief do you even defense?)
#9 Washington (Lost a close game to a good team, if Wash wins out and Auburn does good, this is still a top 10 team)
#10 Wisconsin

Went on vacation right after the UW/Auburn game, but man what a tough loss. So many chances to win that game but let it go due to bad playcalling and decision-making (looking at you, Browning).

Put up a good fight against a good team in pretty much a road game, so nothing to be ashamed about. Still disappointed. Oh well, onto the rest of the season.

#1 Bama (defending champs, I think Arky State will win the sub belt, a better team than most think)
#2 Auburn (Ugh, but beat a weak team, took care of business, )
#3 OU (they churn and burn a score board, this time vs UCLA)
#4 Clemson (Barely Beat A&M, is A&M good now, or is Clemson dropped a bit? Or maybe a little of both? It was on the road for them)
-----------------------------------------------------
#5 UGA (Beat USC [east] team handily some thought might upset them.)
#6 OSU (beat a bad team good)
#7 West Virginia (meh)
#8 Stanford (beat USC)
#9  Wisconsin (meh)
#10 Washington (Beat a team like they should have. )

Teams on the cusp:
Notre Dame (Beat Ball State Close) Drops out of the top ten
A&M (played Clemson close)
LSU (If they win this week they will deserve it beating Auburn and Miami)
Mississippi (Kansas State game caught my eye, win a few games and lets see)
Arizona state (I was laughing at the Herm Edwards hire, I reserve judgment now)
Title: Re: 2018 College Football Thread
Post by: rollntider on September 16, 2018, 10:45:04 AM

#1 Bama (defending champs, I thought Ole Miss was going to give a game to Bama, they did and the first play was over.)
#2 UGA (Constantly beating the hell out of their opponents, I wasnt sold on UGA, but I am now. They or Bama will rep the SEC)
#3 OSU (beat a TCU Impressively, the Big 10's hope for the playoffs)
#4 Clemson (Chugging along, ACC looks weak outside of Va Tech.)
-----------------------------------------------------
#5 OU (Iowa state may be good, the jury is still out)
#6 LSU (Oh Hey I know you, I like my crow with a bit of texas pete and siracha)
#7 West Virginia (DNP)
#8 Stanford (beat UCD)
#9  Mississippi State (This may be short lived, they get in the top ten and then crumble like stale bread)
#10 Washington (I struggled with putting in Penn State here or dropping Auburn here, but at this point I think they can stay)

Teams on the cusp:
Auburn (This is the auburn team I expected, no running game and living off of pass plays, the record I thought auburn would be at, but thought they would lose to Wash, beat LSU)
Notre Dame (Beat Vandy Close, Um the doormat of the SEC almost beat them, and was driving late. Put these guys in the playoffs with no conference championship game. Still on the cusp because they are Notre Dame lol)
Va Tech (Because there arent many more teams that need to be here)
A&M (Blasted ULM, if they beat Bama, they get in the top ten)
Penn State - (They keep winning, and App State may have been a bad day)

Keep an Eye on:
Oregon (Quietly Sitting at 3-0, beat Stanford and become a contender again)

Nevermind:
Wisconsin (To the voter in the AP voting them #1, do you even watch football? I struggled to put them in the top 10)
Arizona state (LOL, you had me there for a minute)
FSU (ROFFLE COPTER)
UCF (Even running the table with UNC on your schedule would be hard to put you in the playoffs, FBS teams get criticized for having any of their opponents on one's schedule, their schedule is what critics criticize other teams for)

here is an interesting stat I read on another forum

QuoteCurrent streak of not losing a game by more than 2 TDs in the SEC:
Arkansas - 0
Ole Miss - 0
South Carolina - 1
Tennessee - 2
Mizzou - 3
Florida - 3
Auburn - 4
Vandy - 4
Texas A&M - 4
UGA - 8
Miss St - 11
LSU - 14
Bama - 165

that is to any team now, not just SEC

now another thing I found interesting the next team in the NCAA was Wisconsin at 43 games, the team that last beat them bad?

:D

I know this wont last forever, so i am gonna enjoy this :)

What rivalry game do you guys  miss. It could be a game that is no longer played? or a game that is no longer a spotlight game because one team has fell on hard times.

Here are some of mine:

Nebraska Oklahoma - Loved that game every year
Texas vs A&M - same
Auburn Tennessee - same
and one due to one team falling on hard times
Bama Tennessee

yeah, I know why Texas did it, to punish A&M for leaving, but they could still play. I always thought A&M should have scheduled another Texas team the last weekend like Clemson/S. Carolina UGA and Ga Tech. Same state different conference.

But Oklahoma and Nebraska why they dont still play baffles me. That was a national game being that would be an OOC game I think they should renew the rivalry.

I always thought Penn State and Notre Dame should play every year.  I dunno why.

Definitely Texas v A&M. F*ck Texas, seriously

yeah, I know why Texas did it, to punish A&M for leaving, but they could still play.

I dunno why.

true, but I would have loved to see it :)  Looks like Jimbo has A&M playing better. I was hoping it would take him another year or so lol.

Didn't see a second of it, but sounding like Georgia just came out flat and Death Valley is a bad place to be flat.

I can't recall the last time Michigan absolutely throttled Wisconsin like they did last night, but the Wolverines made a good team look awful. Hell of a way to start off a three game gauntlet that DE Chase Winovich has taken to calling the 'Revenge Tour'.

Up next? Old man grumpy himself, Mike Dantoni and his little group of Spartans. Fuck 'em, I can't wait to see Michigan kick the shit out of them in their own backyard.

LSU is the same LSU, UGA lost a lot from from their team last year and they faced no one on their schedule yet(before LSU). UGA will lose 1 or 2 more before the season is over. SEC east is weak, A&M would win the east this year. LSU has about 2 more losses ahead for them I feel. Bama and A&M.  I am curious if Miss State will give them a game. not sold on state either.

My thoughts on the LSU BAMA game.

Gary Danielson needs to go ahead and just admit he wants someone to beat Bama. He actually cheered on a sack of Tua. I understand Bama fatigue but come on.

LSU's defense is pretty good. Their defense with a good offense would put them in contention.

I think we pissed someone off because we can't recruit a good kicker to save our life. 2 missed XP's

LSU's offense is garbage, if they had Mizzou or Tennessee's offense Bama would had struggled today.

Well, a kicker hasn't cost you anything in the last 15 years I can recall so I think you're fine ;-)

re 2011 season Bama lost the regular season game vs. LSU 9-6 several missed FG's. It cost the 2011 SEC title game, although Bama and LSU played in a 21-0 rematch in which Bama won the national title.

2013 Iron bowl vs Auburn Bama missed 3 FGS including the last one that was ran back for a TD and cost Bama a shot at the SEC and National title.  Auburn ends up losing to FSU.

2 shots at an SEC title and a shot at the national title .... I know it seems like Bama wins it every year but yeah our kicking has sucked since 2010.

I have always kinda liked Leach for his outspoken ways.

But when you are outspoken and really don't have a clue as to what you are talking about.

https://sports.yahoo.com/doesnt-make-sense-no-13-washington-state-upset-fall-rankings-020100637.html

The article doesnt go into it like I had hoped but he made reference to SEC teams playing FCS teams and maybe the pac 12 should do that and get higher rankings instead of playing 9 conference games (heard on the radio this morning)

Lets Break down WSU's powerful schedule shall we?

Wyoming (6-6)
SJSU (1-11)
E Washington (FCS)
USC (5-7) and lost to them
Utah (9-3)
Or State (2-10)
Oregon (8-4)
Stanford (7-4)
Cal (7-4)
Colo (5-7)
Arizona (5-7)
Washington (9-3)

I am sorry You guys played a FCS team your self. Want to be rated higher? Beat 5-7 USC, and then Beat Washington and you guys are in the talk for the playoffs.  Not trying to throw shade at Washington here, but Washington lost to Auburn who finished 5th in the SEC west.  They should have finished one lower but somehow A&M choked away that win.

He cried about having to play 9 conference games SEC/ACC teams playing 8.

But you cant convince me that playing 9 conference games is better when you have
Oregon State at 2-10
Rutgers at 1-11
Kansas 3-8
Illinois 4-8
Arkansas 2-10
North Carolina 2-9
Louisville 2-10
UCLA 3-9
Oregon State 2-10

I found it funny he threw shade for teams playing FCS teams and played one himself.

Keep crying about having to play a game against 2-10 teams.

I think playing a 8-4 Arkansas State , 6-6 Tulane, 9-2 Army is more respectable than that 9th game against 2-10 Oregon State, Kansas, Arkansas etc....

BTW started this to get some football debate going, would love to hear your thoughts on this.

My prediction for today:

1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. f*ck ND (Rudy sucks too)
4. Oklahoma

First, let's address this hot take from Pat Forde:

https://sports.yahoo.com/yes-alabama-georgia-belong-college-football-playoff-013638376.html

QuotePut them both in the playoff.

Alabama is in. But Georgia should be in as well.

Yes, with two losses.

Yes, as a non-conference champion.

Yes, despite the résumés of Oklahoma and Ohio State.

Georgia is good enough to overcome all that.

Hahahahaha no. Piss off Georgia, you lost twice. If you wanted in you should've taken care of business.

In the battle of 11-1...yes, I would put the Sooners (barely) in over Ohio State. Oklahoma took care of business when they needed to, avenging their one loss from earlier this season. While the Big Ten is easily a better conference than the Big 12 this season (even with Rutgers lol), the buckeyes have looked like utter shit for about 40% of the season. And if I hear one more mention about how this is a year of 'redemption' for that covering up and lying sack of shit coach in Columbus, I'm gonna scream. And I'd still put those two in over Georgia.

Don't worry though, Georgia-you've still got more of a claim to a playoff spot than UCF ever will.

Well it's more or less felt like a pretty disappointing season up to this point for UW, but at the end of the day, winning the Pac-12 twice in the last three years and three straight double digit win seasons is pretty good all things considered. And I get to go to the Rose Bowl for the first time to see them play and that's pretty damn awesome. Can't say I'm expecting them to win but it should be an awesome experience regardless.

What is everyone's thought on the Urban stepping down?
I am not sure what to think of it. I am sure he left the SEC because Saban came in, and other schools started getting good, and the SEC botched the Cam Newton thing, so he left.

My thought with the scandal, and if Michigan becomes the power it could become, he may be hard pressed to keep them happy there.

He should've gotten fired months ago for protecting an abuser on his staff and then lying about it to investigators that didn't have the guts to call him out on it because he won a championship for the university. Fuck him and fuck anyone that protected him. Hell of a coach but one detestable human being and a scumbag.

But this time he's retired for sure, for "health reasons" (again). He'll spend time with his family, just like he did when he left Florida and spent so much more time with his family at ESPN.

So naturally, he'll be back coaching somewhere by 2020 because after all the bullshit he's said in the past why the hell would anyone believe what he's got to say now?

Im not completely updated on what exactly happened and what he did or didn't do, but DV needs to be extracted from society and you can't do that unless you seriously punish those extremely visible influential types who allow it to continue through negligence or otherwise.

I agree, when he was caught lying he should have been fired. But they got their due with that bad loss  lol. To be honest I thought Kelly would have Notre Dame a dumpster fire by now, and Meyer would have moved into that job soon.

How do you guys see the playoffs shaping up? Me I am nervous of OU for several reasons, the spread that they run, they run with perfection. Our DB's can be had on pass plays and our LB play is not what it has been under Saban.

On the other hand Big 12 isnt known great defense (this 2018 Bama defense is not great, its above average at best) I watched Mack Wilson let the TE or G seal him off from plays (vs UGA) that other Saban players would have went for the carrier and stuffed a run.  OU's Defense can be had they let plenty of teams score points and looks like we may have to win a shoot out.

If Tua is healthy I like our chances, Jalen is improved, and God bless him for winning that game for us last week, but of the teams we have to face, OU is the one I feared lol.

Clemson gets a bye and faces the winner of Bama/OU.

I found this quite funny considering this was from Ohio State lol

I think Kyler Murry wins it because of Tua played on a bad leg in the SEC and could not perform to his normal play. Kyler played great all season long even though he could not get the lead for his team big enough so he could rest. And  unlike Kyler and Haskins he didn't lose a game to a lower ranked or unranked team. ;)

All in all nice job by ohio state, this is what college football is about.

LMAO at Georgia fans thinking they belonged in the CFB Playoff over Notre Dame.

As much as I despise ND (lol fuck the Irish)...don't have two losses, bitches.

...and don't even come at me with those UCF idiots either. Play someone, and play in a conference that matters. Piss off.

Is Alabama wearing "SEC Graduate" patches? That's cool...definitely should highlight something that happens so rarely from schools down there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
😈

Now my rant why does Notre Dame get invited to the playoffs? They were only slightly better than Michigan state and Ohio State embarrassments.

Why do I think Notre Dame was a terrible choice for the playoffs?

Notre Dame 24 Ball State 16 (4-8)
Notre Dame 22 Vandy 17 (Hat tip to the refs for that game) (6-7)
Notre Dame 19 Pitt 14  (7-6)
Notre Dame 24 USC 17 (5-7)

The only impressive win was Syracuse and maybe Stanford.

People are talking about extending the playoffs to 8 teams? We have a hard time finding 4 good teams. Notre Dame with the 3rd worst playoff appearance.

Also, that article's from 2015. Here, let's go with something a bit more recent. :)

You can search there since it doesn't look like anyone's put together an aggregate list yet (at least none that I could find half a cup of coffee into my morning).  8)

Ugh. Yeah, ND gets preferential treatment because they're ND, the last independent holdout and they're college football's little special baby. Fuck 'em, can't stand 'em.
That being said...going by committee parameters who was better? Georgia: Two losses is a non-starter, thank u, next.
Ohio State: Purdue just scored again.
UCF: FOH.
ND got in because they finished 12-0, plus the other stuff above. Silver lining: I got to see Notre Dame get lit up like Nakatomi Tower on Christmas Eve yesterday, and it was enjoyable.

I'm really not into blaming the committee for something that's pretty obvious: Alabama and Clemson are light years ahead of everyone else this season, and it wouldn't have mattered who you threw into the 3 and 4 spots because the results ultimately would've been the same.

So yeah...can't say I saw that game playing out the way it did (to be fair, I didn't see it at all, I'm at work). Sorry tider.

Really didn't think Clemson had much of a shot with those players suspended, but turns out it didn't make a difference. That was a beatdown.

Yeah one team wanted it more, hats off to them. We moved the ball up and down the field and for some reason our OC decided to hand the ball to Damien Harris in the red zone. Josh jacobs was running like a man possessed and Damien had an off night. So we went with Harris. Plus Clemson was playing a great defensive scheme. You couple all of that together plus every good bounce went their way.  I still remember back to the early 2000's and would take a night like last night over what we had previously. Its good to be in contention.
Some good points
14-1 season
Beat Tennessee, LSU, OU and Auburn
Sec champs
Playoffs win
national title appearance (I do think that qualifies as appearing even if we didnt look like we participated. :) )

Thanks and Hang in there, I remember writers and rival fans talking about how Bama will never be relevant again.  Then Saban happened. Most of the Bama fans are not happy with the loss, but realize we are in a dynasty and appreciate it all.  Clemson is a good team also, I am not upset and hope we can get back next year.
