Title: MLB 19: The Show

Probably skipping this year since I have 18, unless there's some crazy new features that I HAVE TO HAVE. I do like these changes to RTTS though, I like the idea of the personality types and relationships, that is pretty neat to have that off-the-field stuff in there. Not sure how I feel about getting rid of the caps, but, whatever, it's just a game anyway.

All that being said, The Show is always great, the gameplay is fantastic, and if you haven't played one yet or it's been a few years, I'd recommend picking this up when it comes out.

I'll probably pick it up this year since I ended up skipping it last year. I don't mind them getting rid of caps, it's pretty much an offline mode anyway. 100 velocity with 40 control reliever, here we go... 🤣

Hopefully they'll fix the schedules for this go round; part of what killed RTTS MLB17 for me was playing the same interleague division every year. Should've rotated like it does in real life.

Weird that it didn't rotate in 17, but I can confirm that it did in 18, so you should be good to go there.

Brand new game mode!

Looks like they basically RTTS'd franchise mode. I'd prefer it if we can make roster moves still, it's unclear from this video if you can but doesn't APPEAR to be the case. But I could see myself playing this mode if they still give you roster control.

I know you could transfer your RTTS guys/franchise stuff in the past, but I wonder if you can do it if you've skipped a season? Debating on whether to continue my Rockies SS/LF or just starting over...

I wasn't able to transfer my RTTS stuff between MLB 16 and 18, so I'd assume no.

that's interesting, I thought you've been able to transfer for a while now. What version you coming from norm?

MLB 17. Kinda figured I wouldn't be able to but I'll just keep it separate for now. Gives me more time to figure out whether I want to keep it at SS or try something new.

you should be able to port over from 17 IIRC

Nah. I haven't picked up 18 in a while, between RDR2, Spider-Man, and I've been absolutely obsessed with For Honor later. I don't think there's enough new stuff in RTTS to get me to buy this.

I was interested in that "March to October" mode, but it sounds like you can only do one season and then it tosses you into an actual franchise mode, and I don't think you have any roster control either for trades and what have you, so that's meh (although, still a chance I'm wrong on that, but it certainly doesn't look like you can trade or do free agency during the season).

For that price it might be worth taking a shot on it. Still thinking about it myself, but NBA 2K20 does drop on Friday so I probably won't...

Well if that price didn't work for you, turns out you've got an even better deal if you're a PS Plus member: it'll be one of October's Free Games of the month.

For that price I'll definitely take a chance on it.

Been a couple seasons for me, so I can't help you much in that regard...thought Bojack had it last season though.

I did! My big focus will be on that RTTS-ized franchise mode spinoff. I'll have some thoughts here.

Very early first impressions:

I'm fairly certain they've done this in years past, but I do like the explanation of the various controls you can try out for hitting, pitching, throwing, and baserunning before committing to them.

Graphics, as always, are incredible.

Chose the Tigers (as usual) for my favorite team, and the tutorial intro game is also nice and another good way to get players used to the controls. But yikes, how far this lineup has fallen from the last time I fired this game up.

One thing new (to me, anyway, not sure if they did this for 18): the seasonal intro video. It started with Fall, which I thought was pretty cool. Of course I had to look up if they had one for Spring and Summer, and they do. Can view those down below.

Totally forgot this came out yesterday for Plus, can't wait to get my hands on it.

Norm, did you happen to notice if that March to October mode allows you to sign and trade players and manage your minor leagues like real franchise mode? I'm also curious if you can play multiple seasons in the streamlined mode or if it only goes full franchise after 1 season (I think it does), but I can check that part out later.

Nope, sorry! Only had time for the tutorial game after downloading; hoping to take a deeper dive into it my next couple days off tomorrow and Friday. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Excited to try this today (was at a point in my ongoing Madden 16 franchise yesterday where I trade a ton of players for draft picks, was very excited for it, had to do that instead of trying MLB). Definitely checking out that March to October first, will report back after I check out some things there.

How's RTTS (OH MY GOD I JUST REMEMBERED I CAN IMPORT MY RTTS PLAYERS FROM MLB18)
Title: Re: MLB 19: The Show
Post by: TheNorm on October 03, 2019, 07:56:14 PM
Played one game of March to October, was alright. Lost the opener at Toronto 2-0; game jumped into the top 6th with it 0-0. Didn't field well lol. I like the streamlined approach to a season but to be honest I didn't dive in too much since I really wanted to get into RTTS instead; that mode has always been my go to. So I honestly can't say what you're allowed to do team management wise, but what I can say is it simmed the next few games (lost the series to Toronto 1-2) and then it jumps to the next series and puts you in another situation, this one looking like I need to rally against the Yankees.

Liking RTTS once again though, and this will once again probably be where the bulk of my playing time goes. Instead of seeing whether I could import my player from MLB17, I just decided to start over with a new one. Not sure if they had this in 18 but now you get to choose a player archetype which determines where the bulk of your starting attributes goes, and also new is personality type. Went for the The Anomaly archetype, a SS like my last RTTS guy from 17, and my top 3 choices for personality were Heart & Soul, Captain, and Maverick (Lightning Rod is the fourth one available).

The scouting evaluation and the Topps Showcase seem familiar, which is where I'm at now. More as I go along.

Game does play an amazing game of baseball though.

Gave March To October a go, it's certainly neat, but yeah, there's no additional franchise component to it. Too bad.

RTTS is still incredible.

The player archetype was in 18, the new thing though is the personality choices.

I created a new Starting Pitcher last night and went through the 1st East-West game (had to make dinner before I got a chance to play the second and do the draft), but I did go ahead and also import my CP and RF from MLB 18. I didn't play any games with them yet, but it fully imports everything. It's as if I started those 2 on 19 instead of 18.

The only thing I did notice was a box that says "Customize" that allows me to retroactively apply those new Personality types (I didn't actually do it yet, so I'm not sure if you also unlock the additional perks automatically based on your accumulated stats, or if you have to start from 0 basically).

Reading this, I really want to pick this up which seems silly since the new one will be out in April.
Only thing I don't like is all the new features ala player archetype, dont benefit imported players, at least I dont think they do. I hate starting a new guy and only getting in a few seasons before the next version.
I still have an 11 year guy Im working on and my last new guy as 17 I think. There's an old pitcher in there somewhere Ive had for a few years but haven't done much with him, maybe Ill start over new with him

Well they had player archetypes in 18, although I never played 17 so maybe not in that one. So that carried over when I imported my CP and OF. The only thing I had to add was the personality types, and it gives you the ability to do so (although, again, I don't know if anything accumulates so you get the added perks from those personality types based on your accomplishments on the previous game).

I'd say it's better, not by like, a country mile or anything, but it is an improvement (and, again, I mean, 19 is free right now). The personality traits and the perks involved seem really cool. I don't know how you felt about it, but a lot of people didn't like the fact that in 18, you couldn't get every stat to 99 OVR, but they removed those limitations in 19. Now, when you choose player archetype, instead of being limited to a specific OVR, you just have some traits that train slower than others depending on your archetype, which is probably a better way to handle it.

I dont like that everything can go to 99, to me, that's just not realistic and a game striving for realism...well....
But what I really dont like is that attributes dont diminish as your guy gets older. Maybe people dont regularly have 10 -15 year players for that to be in effect.

Oh they might diminish, I don't know. I've never gotten anywhere near far enough in any RTTS iteration to see, haha. Even my OF from 2018 only got to 2025 so far.

Yeah. I don't know. For a true hall of famer, the drop off can be a little later, I suppose. MLB guys play longer than NFL, right? At least, the stars do, anyway, I think.

yea they do, or at least have a more effective role even with diminishing skills. It can even prolong a career with the DH, ala Pujols.

I'm enjoying the hell out of RTTS again. Is it perfect? No. Some commentary stuff doesn't always fit with what's happening in the game, but it's rare (example: a relief pitcher coming into the 8th gets blistered a bit, and you've got the color guy saying "I can't believe the manager has left this pitcher in, here in his 8th inning of work"). No, it's literally the third batter he's faced.

For a mode like RTTS, I don't mind that every attribute can conceivably go to 99 since you're not taking the player online anyway. Personal preference and all that, and besides, I don't have that kind of time to dedicate to getting my player there anyway. I also like that each attribute can increase and decrease depending on your actions. This is coming from someone that hasn't played since 17 though, so YMMV. Hoping I'll get to play a little more in the field though; so far through one month I think I've played SS twice and DH every single game otherwise.

So far I've played RTTS mostly with my OF, and one thing is for sure: I still, even on Veteran difficulty, can barely get a hit when playing this game while high.

Pitching's fine though!
