Title: 2020 pro football thread
Post by: rollntider on February 09, 2020, 11:17:42 AM
Since the new xfl has kicked off. So has anyone checked it out yet? I really like the games yesterday. Hope this league does well.

It was enjoyable enough and I'll watch it again. Not as campy as XFL 1.0 was, and I like some of the different rules for kickoff and XP tries.

I really do want this league to succeed.

i do also, I enjoyed the AAF but it was missing something. XFL seems like it has that something it was missing.

I have watched two games.  The quality of football seems to be there and I do like some of the innovative rules. So far I hope it makes it.

I haven't watched yet, but I hope it finally provides some competition to the NFL

Ratings are down but doing steady

attendance is up though.

Things that don't change: Jerry Jones is still a petty fucking idiot.

https://sports.yahoo.com/jerry-jones-no-cowboys-ring-of-honor-for-jimmy-johnson-in-2020-231215502.html

Jimmy Johnson is pretty much the only reason that team won three Super Bowl rings under Jones (that Switzer win is still Jimmy's team IMO, dude was a clown otherwise). Also fairly certain this isn't news to anyone here.

I just cant...dont even tempt me with Jones.

Ok, Ill bite....
For this that absolve Jones, Ill just say this; the ONLY constant, the one single thing in every single season that is absolutely the same since the last Super Bowl win, is him.
I dont care what anyone says, Johnson was the reason the Cowboys won, period. He set the wheels in motion on the great train robbery, he utilized the draft picks, he built that team.
And that jackass Switzer...that Okie dolt cost the Cowboys 4 in a row, period. His antics in that SF championship game gave the team a crucial penalty and....ok, never mind. but fuck the both of them.
Always and forever. Seriously.

Not surprising considering what's currently happening. I didn't watch, but if the league had to fail, sucks it had to be this way. I imagine the startup costs were just too much to deal with the current lack of revenue.

I agree. I was actually enjoying this XFL version.
Maybe they will be able to start up again next year.

Now that's a bummer. Really enjoyed watching the XFL this time around and thought it could stick around a bit.

Well I had hopes for the XFL and AAF and it sucks they are done. Both didnt even last a full season. And If you had asked me which one would have lasted longer i would had said the XFL.
Title: Re: 2020 pro football thread

I really do think the XFL had a good shot at going long term, but 'rona took care of that. No league starting up could've survived that.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Knowing that Jerry Jones alone will be making the pick brings me great joy; odds are he'll fuck this up even worse than Bob Quinn from the Lions will. 🤣🤣
Title: Re: 2020 pro football thread
Post by: Crewe on April 23, 2020, 03:52:57 PM
yea, he will, but you know who is climbing up the ladder of shitty GM's? Bill O'Brien.
Back to Jones though; you know, I've always said that I thought Jerry was a solid owner but a terrible GM. I honestly don't think he will be too bad this drat and lets not kid ourselves, there's no way that his kid won't be in constant contact with him throughout. I'v softened on Stephen Jones over the years, he seems to have more sense than his dad.

To be honest, looking at it Dallas made a decent pick-one hell of a weapon to add on offense in CeeDee Lamb. They could actually be decent this coming season if there is one (but still, as always: f*ck the Cowboys).

Thought I read somewhere a few weeks ago that Rodgers would really like it if Green Bay drafted a skill position in the first...hahahaha how's your eventual replacement sound chief? Even traded a 4th rounder away to move a few spots up.

As for the Lions, they didn't botch their number 3 pick since it looks like no teams made an official offer to trade up. I personally would've preferred ATH/OLB Isaiah Simmons out of Clemson because I think he's gonna be something special, but Jeff Okudah's also going to be a great CB. The Lions as usual have quite a few needs and Okudah fills one of them. The key for the team moving forward will be to not screw up Day 2 and 3 (fat chance of that happening, this front office blows). But hey, at least Quinn didn't select "Mark All Emails As Read" for the number 3 pick, so there's hope for the Pats wannabe.

Amazed that no RBs came off the board until the last pick of the first round (even with the league becoming more pass heavy, it's a shock to me), but KC snagged a good one in Edwards-Helaire out of LSU.

Yea I was happy with the pick. A comment made me chuckle about this pick;
40 burgers, lets goooo lol
Still, I'm a believer in slow steady offense and a stifling defense, so while I'm optimistic, lack of d always hurts..

I didn't like packers pick at all

It's tough when you have a ton of needs. I remember when JJ finally picked a cornerstone CB in Newman years ago. By the time other quality players were found, Newman career was over lol

The RBdidnt surprise me too much.. I mean they are a dime a dozen now so why waste a first rounder..
Unless you find a guy like Zeke, so what do I know lol

I remember on a previous version of this board back when Matt Millen was still GM of the Detroit Lions that I finally hit my breaking point and said "fuck it", I'm not watching this team again until Millen's gone.

It's now 2020, and I've hit my breaking point once again: until Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia are fired, I'm out. Not wasting my time on Sunday, not spending another dime on merchandise, I'm done.

Lol, I was wrong about him too. I honestly can't even remember who I thought the Lions should've drafted, but it wasn't a QB. Pretty sure I felt they should go defense or line. I was going to write what I posted on FB the day he was drafted, but their search function sucks.

FB, in general, sucks.

Lions made some history today.

Also saw the Falcons blew a big lead and lost...at least it didn't happen in the Super Bowl. That would be embarrassing.

That was a fun game, if you're a football, or cowboy fan.

Re: Lions...I always liked Stafford and he silenced doubters early on in his career, its just sad he won't get a big game chance with the Lions. Not sure how many years he has left, but I dont think Detroit turn in to contenders in that time.

Bingo. He's most likely going to have to go through yet another GM/coaching change, and it sucks. He says all the right things like he never wants to leave here and still wants to try to build a winner here (he'll always have my admiration and respect for that), but if he turned around and demanded a trade tomorrow I'd still be happy for him. He's a gamer, and absolute joy to watch play, and seems a standup guy too. As usual, the Lions for the most part have wasted him.

The Passing of the Torch Bowl, here we go. My too early for it to mean anything pick is Chiefs 34-28. Too many weapons and if KC's defense gets to Brady at the same rate they got to Allen, it's gonna be a long day.

Granted, two weeks is plenty of time to gameplan and COVID could still wreck one or both teams (if they're smart they'll lock these guys in a bubble yesterday until Super Bowl Sunday)...but the Chiefs are just on another level.

In other NFL news, I'm still trying to process the Stafford news so I'm just gonna stay quiet on that front for now.

I love seeing these videos when the players find out they've made it into the Hall of Fame.

Megatron is easily one of the best I've ever seen play the game. His combination of size, speed, and agility were an absolute joy to watch. Yet another guy that chose to retire in his prime instead of playing another second for the Lions...I'm fine.

Really, I'm fine.

Ah, Charles Woodson. Thank you for making my senior year at Michigan an absolute thrill, my favorite Wolverine football player right up there with Desmond Howard. Would go on to have one hell of a career in the NFL too. Glad he finally got that Super Bowl ring too, and one of the very few reasons I pulled for the Packers in that game lol.

https://twitter.com/CBSSports/status/1358240660625764353

Woodson was also the guy that sacked former teammate Tom Brady in the infamous 'Tuck Rule' game, and he's made his feelings known quite a few times.

Quote"Let's just get this out of the way," Woodson said Sunday on the NFL Network. "If they make the correct call -- which they did at first, then they overturned it -- this (10)-game playoff streak that Tom Brady has? It never happened. Tom Brady owes me his house. I'm the reason why he's married to who he's married to. I'm a reason for a lot of that. Everything. Because they overturned that call."

"Tom. C'mon now. 'Fess up. It was a fumble. It's still a fumble."

So some friends challenged me to take a look at last night's Super Bowl and the accomplishments of one Tom Brady, but strictly keeping it to on the field. It's really fucking difficult, but here goes...

7 Super Bowl rings and to continue his high level of excellence for 20 years and at 43 years of age is a feat that most likely will not be matched in our lifetimes. Most doubters thought it was Belichick and the system, well he just went to the NFC and to a team that went 7-9 last season (and hadn't made it to the playoffs since 2007 and had a winning record in a season 3 times during that span) and won a ring there. He's already said he's coming back so it's quite possible he could add to his total next season. The numbers don't lie. He's the greatest quarterback of his generation and the greatest QB in NFL history. If you don't like it, sorry, go cry about it some more-what he's accomplished on the field can't be matched.

And yet...

Now that I've stated objectively, seriously fuck his MAGAt supporting ass. He willingly supported an idiotic fascist racist fuckopotamus and sure maybe he backed off a little bit after he got clapped on it the damage is done. You can miss me with that 'keep sports and politics' separate bullshit too. That's pretty much all I have to say about it, and if you don't like parts or all of it...oh well. IDGAF. FDT forever.

Other Super Bowl stuff...

Seeing an ICU RN do the coin toss was pretty damn cool. Also loved honoring all the front line workers and everyone impacted by COVID-19 last year. Props.

I was looking forward to The Weeknd doing the halftime show from the moment it was announced and he did alright. I thought the mic was a little too low at the start but overall it was a great performance. Had tickets to his pandemic canceled show in Chicago last year and looking forward to hopefully getting to see him live next year.

Completely underestimated the impact missing two starting OL would have on the Chiefs. Combine that with the defense having probably their worst showing of the year and last night is exactly what happens. Props to Mahomes for balling out though (the 4th down play in the 4th quarter, even though it was dropped for an incomplete pass and a turnover on downs, was incredible), and no doubt in my mind he and the Chiefs will be back in the Super Bowl a few more times.

...and another thing:

The commercials were kinda just blah this year. And as much as I love Springsteen that Jeep commercial was a big miss. I don't really feel the need to unite and find common ground with Nazis and fascists, thanks.

I was really indifferent to him starting out this year and was kind of interested to see what would happen in TB, but the AB sitch and the PPP loan shit tossed him back down to the lower levels. Fuck him and his greatness. I had more, but this is a football thread so...

Allow me to be whiny complainer here. Yes, the referees.
And you can tell me that it wouldnt have mattered either way but there's no way for you to know that.
Those penalties were at crucial points in the game where it was no where near over. It wasnt even half time yet.
So yea, GTFO with that shit.
I dont care who you are, those were terrible, terrible calls.
Would TB have won anyway? In all likelihood, probably. Still.
These refs HAVE to have some accountability for crying out loud.
Is uncatchable pass still a thing? Because neither of those were catchable btw.

All that said, I feared TB defense was going to be out to shut down KC. I thought they would be able to overcome with all of their weapons, but it wasnt to be.
Andy Reid didnt call a great game either. I wonder if his attempted manslaughtering shit head of a kid was messing with his head all game?

On a nicer note, the blue gatorade prop beet saved my monetary investments this Super Bowl so there is that lol

First off: I took no joy in this Super Bowl. Not that I root for Tampa anymore anyways, but still, this feels less like a Tampa Bay win and more like another win for Brady, and nothing more. And man, I can't stand that guy.

But yeah, I think ON-THE-FIELD (qualifier alert), it's pretty clear Brady's the best to play the game, at the very least at the QB position. But man, the dude seems to motivate teammates too (although, a lot of clout comes with the first 6 SB wins which helps with that, I imagine).

But mostly, Tampa just seemed prepared for everything KC threw at them. A lot has been made of KC's O-Line deficiencies with only one week 1 starter playing, I also wonder how much the situation with Andy Reid's kid (Chiefs OLB coach Britt Reid, who is Andy Reid's son, had a DUI incident days prior to the game which resulted in a child being in critical condition) affected this game too, especially given KC's inability to adapt and continuously calling plays with long dropbacks despite the onslaught Mahomes was under.

What a boring game. It's the Super Bowl this season deserved, I suppose. Really makes the already horrid decision to play the season during the pandemic seem even LESS necessary than it already did.

Oh, and fuck Antonio Brown. Doesn't deserve to be on any team, much less a SB winner. I know Super Bowl week is always fluff questions from the media, but the "how'd you turn it around" redemption arc questions were vomit inducing.

This play is too good not to share.

Yeah...Mahomes will be fine. He'll be back and he'll be just fine.

His receivers let him down.
I was glad to see Tyreek lose and get a dose of his own taunt back in his mother punching face
