Console Gaming Discussion / Returnal (PS5)

Anyone pick it up? Played it about two hours on release day, I'd describe it as Dead Space meets Hades. Very challenging but enjoying it so far.

Haven't tried this one out yet, but downloaded it on the PS5. It has a free cross-play beta going on right now, specifically for PC, PS5 and Series S.

It's a WWII FPS type game, but with an RTS component: you don't control on hero soldier single-handedly winning battles, but instead multiple squads that you can switch between each individual soldier. This includes having a squad of grunts, or a sniper squad, a tank squad, and even air squads eventually (it seems like unlocking the different types of squads is one of the progression systems). Multiplayer combat is a mix of PvE and PvP, as I think it's 5 v 5, but the battlefield contains 100s of AI controlled soldiers (that, again, you can swap between).

Pretty neat concept for a game, excited to try it out. Watched a gameplay video to get an idea of it and seems like it's at least worth the look:

Console Gaming Discussion / Disco Elysium
April 06, 2021, 02:53:11 PM
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/disco-elysium/

Has been out on PC for a few years, although I've never played it. Picked it up yesterday and played for about 2 hours or so. Easy to tell this is a LONG game (I'd imagine around total RDR2 playthrough time, if not longer, but I don't fully know yet).

You play as a detective with a serious alcohol problem in a dystopian city, as you navigate various social and political entities and environments as you attempt to catch a murderer (or murders? Maybe?) I'd been waiting for this to come out on PS4 since the console release was announced, and so far haven't been disappointed.

RDR2 was well-noted for just the amount of vocal work in the game, amongst the main cast and especially the extras/side characters, and Disco Elysium is no different ("Disco Elysium has added full voice acting and new quests in the Final Cut update. Fascinating detective RPG Disco Elysium today becomes bigger and fancier with its Final Cut, released as a free update. The Final Cut adds voice acting (one million spoken words, they claim"))

You have 4 different stats (Intelligence and Psychology, which I put all my points into, then Strength and I think....Motivation?), and with those stats comes extra skills that you upgrade with skill points earned via XP (Currently I have the Suggestion skill upgraded 2 points, so I get extra dialogue options with the potential to basically incept the people I'm talking to).

Like I said, not very far myself, but if you're looking for a single player game with a ton of detail, easy to learn and play (there's a lot going on but it never feels like a burden, and the UI is simple and intuitive) and that'll last you a bit, can't go wrong here.

Console Gaming Discussion / Fall Guys - PS Plus August

So, anyone download this? A buddy of mine from work is actually a Twitch partner for the developers and has been playing it on his stream. I downloaded it yesterday and have been enjoying it a lot, but haven't grouped up with anyone yet, just played solo.

Some gameplay footage here, although I can't queue the vid so may have to fast forward a minute or two:

Obviously, this is a far older game, but was recently on sale (might still be?) for $10 on the PS Store. I've been playing the hell out of it.

It's basically Assassin's Creed mixed with RDR2 (although, don't expect QUITE the depth an detail of RDR2 here), but a pirate-assassin instead of cowboys. The best pirate sim I've ever played, for sure.

There's nothing quite like attacking a Royal Navy convoy when, just as you're approaching, a giant freaking storm breaks out and suddenly you have rogue waves and twisters to deal with in addition to cannon balls firing towards your ship.

I'll have to get some footage at some point and post it here, but for all my people who enjoyed RDR2, if you find this on sale cheap, 100% worth the price.

Anyone play?

So, it's one of those Battle Royale type games. One of the major differences between this and say, Fortnite is there's no building in this, and you play either in duos or in trios, never solo.

Pairing up with randoms, like any online multiplayer game, is hit or miss, but the game actually has an awesome communication system built into it via pings that does help to keep things on track.

I tried it initially way back when it first released, wasn't the biggest fan. Then I became FULLY addicted to For Honor for about a year and a half, haha. Anyways, I digress.

Lately, a buddy of mine (former coworker) had been trying to get me to play, and a current co-worker who Twitch streams has been picking it up as well, so I decided to give it another chance. The game is vastly improved by having people to play with, and between those two guys, my former manager who also plays, and my brother and another buddy back home, I'm suddenly getting bombarded with requests to play, haha.

Been having a lot of fun learning the ins and outs (like I did with For Honor), but yeah, it's nice not queuing into matches with randoms all the time instead of actual friends (....like For Honor).

TL;DR - we should play Apex together, it finally freed me from my For Honor addiction. Also the game is completely free, it has microtransactions but they're either A) character unlocks, which, fine, I'll allow it and admittedly already spent money on enough in-game credit to unlock all the characters; or B) cosmetics, which, I actually spent way too much money on in For Honor, but that was an up-close melee game, so the customization was more noticeable and worthwhile, whereas this is mostly ranged shooting so you may never even see your enemy close up, thus they may never even see you, so why waste my money, you know?

Really hope it lives up to these early impressions.

Console Gaming Discussion / Christmas Backlog
December 23, 2019, 02:12:32 PM
Since February, I've primarily played For Honor on my PS4. It was a free PS Plus game at the time that I had interest in, and basically now I'm addicted. I love it so much, and figured it'd be enough.

Yet, somehow, it's Christmas and I find myself with games.

Got Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Death Stranding (mainly for the fiancee but I'm sure I'll play it one day) recently, got Titanfall 2 as the PS Plus game for this month and, let me tell you, even if you're tired of FPS games, Titanfall 2 is 100% worth it for the SINGLE PLAYER alone. I haven't even touched the multiplayer yet, the campaign is extremely good (when it was announced as the free PS Plus game, I noticed a lot of comment sections saying it was underrated and overlooked).

I know for a fact my son bought me Persona 5, an RPG with a shit ton of content, and I know my fiancee got me more to come on xmas as well. How's everyone else looking? Suddenly have more games than you know what to do with? I still have to beat FFX 2 as well, and I don't even think I completed the final DLC of Spider-Man yet....

Console Gaming Discussion / For Honor
May 17, 2019, 11:01:20 AM
Anyone download this when it was free back in February on PS Plus? I downloaded it in the "be safe, in case I want to play it" type of way, then in March started actually playing it, and now my brother and I group on nearly every day online to play it. Highly addicted.

It's a fighting game, with 3 factions (although they've sort of added a 4th): Vikings, Knights, Samurai.

The fighting style is easy to learn, as there's 2 side attacks and a top attack, and you can throw a light or a heavy, as well as choosing to do a "dodge forward" or "dodge sideways" attack for many characters as well. There's 4 classes: Vanguard, which are your solid all-around types, assassins which tend to be faster but have less HP, Heavies, which are pretty much what they sound like, and then Hybrid.

Anyways, if anyone wants to give this one a shot, let me know. I'd be more than happy to group up and go through the ropes.

I recorded this last night (apologize for linking to Reddit, I only go to that site for the FH subreddit to stay informed of the updates they make to the game), and it was super cool. There's an event going on right now for a "Realistic Dominion" mode, which is basically just "King of the Hill," with your 3 capture points and you get points there more capture points you have, typical stuff.

The realistic bit comes in because there's no HUD. There's no radar, normally there's an indicator on your enemies of what side their attacks are coming from, but there's none of that in Realistic. Which makes some these parries (which were complete luck) that much more difficult. Anyways:

Console Gaming Discussion / MLB 19: The Show

https://youtu.be/MUnlXMP-w-E

Probably skipping this year since I have 18, unless there's some crazy new features that I HAVE TO HAVE. I do like these changes to RTTS though, I like the idea of the personality types and relationships, that is pretty neat to have that off-the-field stuff in there. Not sure how I feel about getting rid of the caps, but, whatever, it's just a game anyway.

All that being said, The Show is always great, the gameplay is fantastic, and if you haven't played one yet or it's been a few years, I'd recommend picking this up when it comes out.

When I remembered I created some back in the day. Logged into my Facebook for the first time in forever just to copy and paste these and then deleted that shit again. Enjoy some of the names and the oddly specific rules!

This is from 2010, apparently:

Couple of things right off the bat.

Touchdowns = drinking. Period. For the Jets Chargers game, consider it celebration when the Jets score, a drowning of sorrows when the Chargers score.

Halftime/End of Game = Amaretto shots. We shall do these together.

Lets get to specifics.

Cowboys/Vikings

Any mention of Jessica Simpson = drink

Any time Brett Favre is referenced as a "gunslinger/warrior/a lot more careful than in the past/looks like a kid out there enjoying the game" = drink

Any time Tony Romo is compared to Brett Favre = drink

Any time Tony Romo's botched snap is mentioned = drink

Any time the camera shows Wade Philips and/or Brad Childress staring blankly at the field = drink

Any time Adrian Peterson fumbles = drink

Any time Jared Allen does a sack celebration = drink

Any time a past Cowboy is mentioned = drink

Any time Jerry Jones is shown in his press box = drink

Any time Jerry Jones is shown in his press box unhappy = drink twice

Any time Roy Williams drops a pass = drink

Any time Roy Williams catches a pass = drink twice (you're clearly already drunk if you saw him catch one)

Any time Percy Harvin's migraines are mentioned = drink twice (feel his headaches!)

All I can think of for now. Possibly more later.

Jets/Chargers

Any time USC is mentioned = drink

Any time Brad Smith comes in at QB = drink

Any time the Jets defense forces a turnover = drink

Any time it was Revis = drink twice

Any time a pass is incomplete in Revis' vicinity = drink

Any time a stat box is shown with all the receivers Revis has faced this season = drink

Any time Rex Ryan is shown screaming = drink

Any time Rex Ryan is shown joking around with Mark Sanchez = drink

Any time Mark Sanchez is shown standing uncomfortably next to Rex Ryan = drink

Any time the Jets turn the ball over = drink twice

Any time Philip Rivers can be seen trash talking = drink

Any time Norv Turner's playoff record is shown or mentioned = drink twice (FEEL HIS PAIN!)

Any time Braylon Edwards drops a pass = drink

Any time Braylon Edwards catches a pass = drink twice (You're clearly drunk if you think you saw him catch one)

Any time Braylon Edwards catches a TD pass = drink thrice (that's 4 times, because you have to drink once for a TD).

Any time any sort of J-E-T-S reference is made (on the broadcast) = drink

Any time the words "Revis Island" are spoken = drink

And this is from 2011:

Couple of things right off the bat.

Touchdowns = drinking. Period. For the Jets Colts game, consider it celebration when the Jets score, a drowning of sorrows when the Colts score.

Halftime/End of Game = Shots

This is a beer drinking game. You can do shots instead anywhere it says drink, but you may die. You can also drink just regularly, of course, but make sure to drink when these things happen. Feel free to adjust rules or add-on at your own desire.

Lets get to specifics.

Saints/Seahawks

Any video montages of the Saints Super Bowl year= drink

Any mentio of Tracy Porter's game-winning interception in the Super Bowl = drink (Bonus: If they show Manningface = drink)

Any mention of Brees' journey through the NFL = drink (Bonus: if they mention the Dolphins passing on him and the Saints giving him a chance = drink)

If Matt Hasselbeck is injured/benched and Charlie Whitehurst has to play = drink

If Marshawn Lynch scores a goalline TD = drink

Any discussion of Reggie Bush's Heisman (probably none, unfortunately) = drink

Any time Reggie Bush is stuffed in the backfield = drink (this one may kill you)

Any time the camera shows Sean Payton or Pete Carroll celebrating immensely = drink

Any mention of Pete Carroll's career at USC = drink

Any mention of Pete Carroll's relation to Reggie Bush = drink

Any time Reggie Bush fumbles = drink

Any mention of the Saints formerly being the "Aints" = drink

Any mention of Seattle's 7-9 record = drink (Bonus: if it's also mentioned that they're the first team to win their division with a losing record = drink)

Any time the "12th Man" is mentioned = drink

Any time a Saints penalty is blamed on crowd noise = drink

If Brees completes a pass to 6 different receivers = drink

If Brees completes a pass to 10 different receivers = 2 drinks

If Brees completes 3 touchdown passes to different receivers = 3 drinks

Any time Mike Williams relation to Pete Carroll is mentioned = drink

Any time Mike Williams' resurgence is mentioned = drink

All I can think of for now. Possibly more later.

Jets/Colts

Any sighting of Manningface = drink

Any time Brad Smith comes in at QB = drink

Any time the Jets defense forces a turnover = drink

Any time it was Revis = drink twice

Any time a pass is incomplete in Revis' vicinity = drink

Any time Rex Ryan is shown screaming = drink

Any time Rex Ryan is shown joking around with Mark Sanchez = drink

Any time Mark Sanchez is shown standing uncomfortably next to Rex Ryan = drink

Any time the Jets turn the ball over = drink twice

Any time Braylon Edwards drops a pass = drink

Any time Braylon Edwards catches a pass = drink twice (You're clearly drunk if you think you saw him catch one)

Any time Braylon Edwards catches a TD pass = drink thrice (that's 4 times, because you have to drink once for a TD).

Any time the words "Revis Island" are spoken = drink

Any mention of the Jets defensive issues this year = drink

Any time Santonio Holmes Super Bowl MVP award is mentioned = drink

Any time any of the Jets off-field issues are mentioned = drink (that means drink for each. So if the words Inez Sainz come up, drink. If Rex Ryan's foot fetish comes up, drink. If Braylon Edwards DUI comes up, drink. If the Sal Alosi trip is brought up, drink. If...well, you get the picture).

Any time Sanchez throws a pick = drink

Any time Ladanian Tomlinson is shown on the bike on the sideline = drink

If LT gets injured = drink

If Shonne Green fumbles = drink

If Vernon Gholston's name is mentioned = drink (if his lack of a sack in his career, or the word "disappointment" is mentioned = drink again)

If Jim Leonhard's injury is mentioned = drink

If the Colts receiving corp injuries are mentioned (Clark, Collie, etc) = drink

Any time Jim Caldwell is shown on the sidelines with a completely blank expression (basically, any time Caldwell is shown) = drink

If you're unsure whether Caldwell is actually alive when shown (ever seen Weekend at Bernie's?) = drink

Any time Manning's play-calling is mentioned = drink

Any time Manning audibles a play = drink

Any time Manning is sacked = drink

Any time Manning is picked = drink

If Cromartie's children are mentioned at all = drink

If John Conner gets a carry = drink

If Conner is referred to as "The Terminator"= drink

If Joe McKnight inexplicably gets the ball at any point = drink

If Dustin Keller actually catches a freaking pass = drink

If Keller scores a touchdown = drink (so drink twice)

Well, today's the day and, regardless of what arguments and counter-arguments you've heard, you've made your decisions. So how'd it go?

Here in Washington, it's pretty awesome because our ballots get mailed to us and we can just drop them off in ballot boxes (so much easier than back in SC). So that was a pleasant experience. I dropped mine off this past Saturday!

How about everyone else? Long lines? Crappy machines? Particularly passionate individuals while you waited? Any predictions for how this all turns out this evening?

On the one hand, meh. On the other, they'll probably have this hacked in a week's time and then you'll be able to add whatever games you want, and in THAT case...maybe. Just maybe.

I don't even know what I'd want on here. Obviously FF7 since I've never played it. I'd take Twisted Metal 1 and 2. I hear Chrono Cross is great although I've never played it. I'd take Crash Bandicoot 1-3 (even though I own the HD remaster). Metal Gear Solid, absolutely. Jet Moto, sure, why not. I never played Parappa the Rapper but always heard it was good (did that need extra peripherals?) I know it won't come on it but I'd love to have NFL Xtreme again. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 would be nice.

I dunno. What other Playstation games were good? I feel like my collection back in the day wasn't very much. Didn't own (or even play) any of the RE or Silent Hill games.

Feel free to post your own "do you remembers" in here, whether it's "do you remember this movie" or "this scene" or whatever.

I'll start.

Hey, do you remember when TUFF was using real NFL player names occasionally, taking some 3rd or 4th stringers and using them for TUFF? Remember when BBB introduced off-the-field incidents and Mao Tosi died and there was a "story" about it basically in all the TUFF news? Remember when his family contacted Ben about it because they were understandably confused and horrified?

Man, the internet in its infancy was so crazy.

Pro Football / Peter Warrick Hall of Famers
August 06, 2018, 11:53:36 AM
I can't remember if I've introduced this concept in a previous time or not, but my friend and I used to have what we called "Peter Warrick Hall of Famers." These were NFL players that were never going to make it to the HoF, yet were starters for their teams (or others) consistently for several years before just vanishing into the abyss (draft busts usually don't count, partially because they're remembered just for being busts, partially because their time in the league is usually shorter).

Anyways, here's a few names for examples. Usually I do a "Peter Warrick Hall of Famer of the Day," but I'm not sure I feel like committing to that schedule, so I'll just start things off and we'll see how well this does. You guys feel free to add too! Doesn't have to be one a day, doesn't have to be daily. It's fun to remember "these guys."

Edit: I'm compiling the posts after this one into, well, this one.

1. Curtis Conway (WR, Chargers, Jets)

2. Eddie Kenninson (WR, seriously, how did any of these Chiefs WRs keep their starting jobs for so long during this time? Snoop Minnis? Johnnie Morton?)

3. Jason Sehorn (CB, Giants, Rams)

4. Natrone Means (RB, Chargers)

5. Elvis Grbac (QB, Chiefs, Ravens)

6. Jeff Garcia (QB, 49ers, Eagles, Bucs)

7. Michael Westbrook (WR, Washington) AND 8. Stephen Davis (RB, Washington)

9. Kerry Collins (QB, Panthers, Giants, Titans)

10. Marc Bulger (QB, Rams)

11. David Woodley (QB, Dolphins, Steelers)

12. Ron Dayne (RB, Giants)

13. Robert Porcher (DE, Lions)

14. Adam Archuleta (S, Rams, Washington, Bears)

15. Marion Barber (RB, Cowboys, Bears)

16. Mario Manningham (WR, Giants)

17. Christian Okoye (RB, Chiefs)

18. Clinton Portis (RB, Washington, Denver)

19. Wayne Chrebet (WR, Jets)

20. Lofa Tatupu (LB, Seahawks)

21. Brian Westbrook (RB, Eagles, Giants)

22. Donnie Abraham (CB, Jets, Bucs)

23. Olandis Gary (RB, Broncos, Lions)

24. Aaron Brooks (QB, Saints, Raiders)

25. Bobby Hebert (QB, Saints, Falcons)

26. Deuce McAllister (RB, Saints)
