Day 3
A film that made you a fan of the director

The Prestige...yeah, I know: I should've become a fan of Christopher Nolan by the time Memento (which I still haven't seen, btw) came out, or even Batman Begins, kicking off the greatest Batman trilogy. That movie made me thankful to Nolan for redeeming the franchise that Joel Schumacher nearly destroyed. The Prestige, however, was the one that really made me a fan of his work. I see his name attached now and I'll almost always (still haven't seen Interstellar either and I bought that when it came out lol) check it out...haven't been disappointed yet.

norm, wth? ;)

Day 2
An actor/actress whose movie you will see regardless of negative reviews

Harrison Ford, He's probably the one actor that I've seen almost every thing he's done.

Day 3
A film that made you a fan of the director

Legend was the first Ridley Scott film that I saw it was Alien and Blade Runner that truly made me a fan of his.

The closest would more than likely be Tom Hanks or Helen Mirren.

*EDIT* scratch that, mad at myself for not having him jump right out in my mind...Denzel Washington.

Good call there.

Hitchcock with Rear Window was my first thought, but Im going with Scorsese and Goodfellas. Just a masterful work.

Cant watch this, at work right now and Im not up on what changes there are, but for years Ive been lobbying for RTTS to:
Limit what attributes you can increase. Speed, throw strength, to a degree, hit power among others do not increase over a players career. Certainly not at such drastic rates. Some attributes should be static.
Most increases should take place in the minors and the first years in the show. Its just far to easy to gather points and have a 99 over guy in no time. I have tens of thousands of points stockpiled because I just dont want to contribute to attributes.
Also, need to easily access a catchers ability to throw runners out. When on base, guys know what kind of catcher they are up against.
Theres more but thats enough for now, will watch later

I had an ex make me watch Steel Magnolias. I was not amused.

interesting. You dint like the movie at all or just didnt think the funny bits were funny?

For me, Tom Hanks. I know every actor can bomb but I will risk it on a TH movie.
It used to be DeNiro, but not so much anymore.

I agree. She's a tease and he's still drawn to her knowing it could end poorly for him.
Confronted, he high tails it and like nut said, could be after a beat down. And that would actually make more sense to me because he paid a price for his bad decision.
And then she just continues on with no consequences or regrets.

great post.
the song was from the late 70's but I suppose the song could take place any time before that.
Thanks for the input, good stuff

riding norms coat tails with approval ;-)
I thought I would continue our 30 day thing with movies.
Some of these will be the same or similar as the music and tv.

Day 1
A movie you are embarrassed to admit you like.

For me, its a chick flick called Steel Magnolias.
A stellar cast but Sally Field once again steals the movie in grand fashion.
This film hits all emotions and is really well done. Even if you dont tell anyone, you should check it out.

He also wrote Joy to the World by Three Dog Night

It does seem straightforward, but the only questions I come back to is the slang dog and cat. In that era, I can recall people called cat, but dog is a little more vague. Dog referred to an ugly woman, or could be a guy as in low down dirty dog I guess.
As for the cat, I think he was a mute. "If that cat could talk" implies he couldn't, and then "...he never said a mumbling word" suggesting he could try to talk but t would be heard as mumbling.
I agree Della ran off with Randy Boone, hence the line changed from Della and the dealer to Della and her lover.

This was a song that I latched on to because I thought it was a fun song till I discovered it was a dark gritty tune and it just stuck to me.

Chit Chat / Lyric interpretations

So, it's late and I'm on zero sleep for two days and was listening to a song that has been a favorite of mine since it was released.
We know songs are not always are purely literal translation. Example, Saturday Night Special. Not one word or instance in that story contains any ambiguity.
However, take just about any Jack White tune and you suddenly have vague interpretations and analogous lyrics.
I thought we could post lyrics that you would like another opinion on to get a fresh perspective or perhaps to solidify your own understanding.
I enjoy discussing things like this but we will see if it has legs.
I'll start with Della and the dealer by Hoyt Axton from 79 (3:18)
Seemingly light hearted and fun song...

I think the lyrics are pretty easy to understand but if not, here ya go.
I'll wait to see if anyone has input before throwing my opinion out there.

It was Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake
And a cat named Kalamazoo.
Left the city in a pick up truck,
Gonna make some dreams come true.
Yea, they rolled out west where the wild sun sets
And the coyote bays at the moon.
Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake
and a cat named Kalamazoo
If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell
About Della and the Dealer and the dog
as well
But the cat was cool, and he never said a mumblin word.
Down Tucson way there's a small cafe
Where they play a little cowboy tune.
And the guitar picker was a friend of mine
By the name of Randy Boone.
Yea, Randy played her a sweet love song
And Della got a fire in her eye
The Dealer had a knife and the dog had a gun
and the cat had a shot of Rye.
If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell
About Della and the Dealer and the dog
as well
But the cat was cool, and he never said a mumblin word.
Yea, the dealer was a killer,
He was evil and mean
And he was jealous of the fire in her eyes.
He snorted his coke through a century note
And swore that Boone would die.
The stage was set when the lights went out.
There was death in Tucson town.
Two shadows ran for the bar back door
And one stayed on the ground
If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell
About Della and the Dealer and the dog
as well
But the cat was cool, and he never said a mumblin word.
Two shadows ran from the bar that night
And dog and cat ran too.
And the tires got hot on the pick up truck
As down the road they flew.
It was Della and her lover and a dog named Jake
And a cat named Kalamazoo.
Left Tucson in a pick-up truck
Gonna make some dreams come true.
If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell
About Della and the Dealer and the dog
as well
But the cat was cool, and he never said a mumblin word.

Sellout! Lol

My nephew is a musician and we talk about this all the time. It's not the band per se, it's the fact they are shaped and polished by record companies in order to sell a watered down product to the public.
Now for the bands themselves, some aren't aware of it early on, some don't care and just want the contract, perhaps some have enough patience and vigor to wait and fight it out. John Mellencamp is a good example.
But basically the thought is that it squeezes the creative life out of the band and suppresses their identity, maybe for so long it just evaporates.
I remember when I was in school for music and video business, we learned exactly this concept and it's interesting to witness.
