Title: The 30 Days of Music Challenge
Post by: TheNorm on January 03, 2018, 09:49:31 PM
Meant to do this on Twitter awhile ago, but throwing it out here...play along as much or as little as you want, I always like hearing everyone else's responses. The way it works is I post once a day in this thread, and you respond with a song that fits within the parameters. Simple enough, right? Here goes.

Day 1
1. A song you're embarrassed to admit you like.
So I've been doing ballroom dance for about 2.5 years now, and this is a perfect song for someone learning a Viennese Waltz - not too fast for a beginner, and not too slow either (otherwise it would just be a waltz). Couldn't stand it before since it was related to Twilight, but I don't mind it now. Go figure.

Not sure what it says about me when I wouldn't be embarrassed by either of those tunes lol

Embarrassed to admit I like?  Don't really have any songs that fit that descriptor, typically if I like a song, I like it without reservation.  I guess in certain contexts there can be songs where I wouldn't want to show someone I like it, but that's more along the lines of not wanting an individual to judge you more than anything else.

Taylor Swift - Blank Space.

That was easy.

Lol I always railed against poppy songs like this back when, so, it didn't go well for me when this on termed my zone

That song is a jam...and once again I'm left to wonder what this says that I'm not embarrassed by this one at all.  8)

Day 2
2. A song that made you a fan of an artist

So many to choose from (almost went with The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars here), but The Arena by Lindsey Stirling's my pick. Not something I typically would've listened to, but heard this one, quickly jumped into a lot of her other stuff and have been a fan since.

Post by: BojackHorsefella on January 04, 2018, 04:25:25 PM
2. Au Revoir (Adios) by The Front Bottoms.

To be fair, I'd never even heard of them, and only saw them because they were opening for Brand New last year (well, 2016. Before the allegations against Jesse Lacy or Brand New, is what I'm saying).

So, part of it was seeing them live and really connecting and being like "I need every CD," but this quick little jaunt is the one that played over and over in my head afterward, so I'm choosing it.

I like that too norm, Ill have to check out more.
For me, Beth Hart with Joe Bonamassa come to mind, holy crap what a duo,

I was contemplating posting Deap Vally which is a female duo devoted to rock (think if Heart and White Stripes had offspring plus an affair with Black Sabbath) but Beth Hart was more of a departure from my signature likes when I was alerted to her existence.

Day 3
A parody or novelty song you like

Had to turn to Weird Al for this one...and he has a bunch to choose from, but I went with this one.

I'm going to stretch this one out based more on the merits of it's video (which I'm at work so can't embed like you cool cats) than the song, but:

Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al

Although if that IS too much of a stretch, pretty much any song from the Popstar movie (or really any song by Lonely Island).

But I stand by the merits of my first answer.

Day 5
A song you like from a movie

I have a feeling I could branch this off into its own thread and it would probably carry on for months...and I probably will when this is all done.  8) But for today...just one.
I freely admit to absolutely loving this movie (the sequels, not so much), and this is the one that sticks out the most for me. That, and Anna Kendrick is dreamy with A++ twitter game.

Pitch Perfect - Just the Way You Are/Just a Dream

Ha, right you are norm!
I feel like every thing I bring up is ancient to you guys, but Imma do it anyway lol
The first film I recall where the music really got me was Jaws, but as far as "listen to" music....Smokey and the Bandit soundtrack by Jerry Reed. Still one of my favorite actors and musicians, extremely underrated in both categories.
Fun fact, Star Wars and Smokey and the Bandit were released two days apart and as one who watched movies over and over....77 was a great year. Rocky, Smokey, Star Wars, Enforcer, Bond, Close Encounters....anyway, I digress...

Day 6
An instrumental song

Kind of doubles as a movie one too since this is where I first heard it, and I've always loved this scene...even though now I'm judging the dancing a little bit in it haha (more Argentine Tango than traditional). Any way, I digress.

The Tango Project - Por Una Cabeza

Great scene.
Buc, had to look yours up, I liked it.

Many options for me, Ennio Morricone is a fav, as is Ravels Bolero but I'll throw in Chanson du toreador from Carmen by Bizet. Actually, quite a few good ones from Carmen. I was first exposed to that music from the Bad News Bears. The original in 76, not that God foresaken 2005 shit show with Billy bob whatshisface. But taking a cue from norm, I digress...

Day 8
A fall/winter song

Using the Bangles version of this song because the Simon & Garfunkel video doesn't have Susanna Hoffs and Jami Gertz in it.

It's either Seether or Staind, pretty sure it's Staind, but it's their cover of "Christmas Time is Here" from the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. The live version of the cover, preferably.

Dude! you took mine lol
not a dig if you like them, because I respect the talent and their knowledge and love of music, but this is about the only song of theirs I can stomach.
Incidentally, I've never heard of a band that says they were so heavily influenced by the. Beatles, but yet dont carry one-ota of similarity in the music, but this just me.

Ill go with Winter by the Stones

Huh, I didn't know that...although now that I think of it I can hear the influence on some of their stuff off of Different Light, their album that went big (it's been ages since I listened to them last regularly...try grade school lol). If She Knew What She Wants and Walking Down Your Street, especially. Short story summed up: yeah, I find that believable-early Beatles anyway, not the Rubber Soul or Revolver phases. And yeah, I listened to a lot of pop growing up lol.

Fun fact: Prince wrote Manic Monday.

Add-on 1: so of course I looked, and here's an interview. Seems they were influenced by a lot of 60s stuff.

Im always relieved when something I spout turns out to be true lol
Now Im going to have to take a browse through A Different Light. I dont know if I recall it just for the hell of it or if I ever heard it.
I was so anti pop growing up it was ridiculous. its carried over into adulthood but I find its a little more relaxed now.
If you couldn't play it live, I considered a band a fraud. I.e. music tracks, backing vocals etc....
When Milli Vanilli was busted...oh the glory days lol

thanks for the heads up, I like some tool. I am ashamed I do not know this. I usually keep up with Zep covers....

Mainly because I first heard this in Requiem for a Dream, which is also kind of unnerving and disturbing.

Slightly amusing story: my brother's fantasy league does a live draft and he does a while intro before we start, so every person has to pick their "intro song." I chose Tiptoe Through the Tulips because I'm weird like that.

Day 10
A song you disliked at first but grew to like

This was easy...pretty much follows my arc for Lady Gaga too: couldn't stand her at first because it seemed like everyone loved her and wanted her played all the time...then I actually took the time to really listen to it and found myself really digging it too.

Iron Maiden - Mother Russia

When their No Prayer for the Dying album came out this was probably the one song on it I didn't like and would always skip. It wasn't until I was at one of their concerts and heard them play it live that I really got to like it.

no it was the Bangles. Seems I remember an interview with Hows saying what a heavy influence the Beatles were and Im thinking, huh?
Cu when I hear Bangles, Beatles is not what comes to mind in any form or fashion lol
To be fair, I haven't listened to a lot of their music either, so Im probably bitching while ignorant ;-)

Seems they were influenced by a lot of 60s stuff.
https://www.salon.com/2016/06/15/beatlemania_and_the_bangles_susanna_hoffs_explains_how_our_obsession_with_the_beatles_brought_the_80s_group_together/ (https://www.salon.com/2016/06/15/beatlemania_and_the_bangles_susanna_hoffs_explains_how_our_obsession_with_the_beatles_brought_the_80s_group_together/)

Add-on 2: ...and now it just hit me that Different Light was released in 1986, 32 years ago. Holy crap.

This is probably more information than any of you ever wanted to know about the Bangles, but oh well.  ;D

ok back to this.
I did some listening and reading and I get where they pull the influence from the Beatles. Seems like its a combination of the pop songs and harmonies as well as the influence of just being the Beatles. So I hear that in their songs, just not much else. Maybe I was looking for a more direct influence. For instance, if a band says Black Sabbath was an influence and you hear the song, you're not going to wonder, gee, was Sabbath an influence? That make sense to anyone other than me? lol
Anyway, ive closed this investigation for myself, just thought Id share ;-)

Sorry for the lateness of this, long day at work lol. Halfway through!

Day 15
An outstanding album track/non-single
I'm interpreting this as a song that wasn't released for airplay off of an album. Anyway, this one jumped right out at me. Mayer Hawthorne's a local guy right out of Ann Arbor, Michigan (woohoo!) that's been around for a few years. First thing that caught my ear off of this song was the bassline, which I absolutely love and want to play someday. Then the song came to signify something more personal (lol). It's got that old school soul sound and I can't get enough of it. If you find you do like it, check out the album "How Do You Do" that it came off of, including a single called "The Walk".

oh man no question, Hendrix. Pick anything!
Seriously, so many just from him, but Ill go with Hear my train a comin. He had so many versions of songs he loved to play and this was one. This one is from the People Hell and Angles, but I really like the BBC sessions version and the Blues version which I think a majority regard as the best version

Heres a brief acoustic version

Truly is heartbreaking we didnt get to experience an older, pardon the pun, more experienced Hendrix because I would have loved to have heard what he would've come up with down the road. How would Eddie Van Halen's career played out if Jimi lived?
Every time I hear his music, I just get lost in the soulfulness of his talents.

Day 17
A song from a genre you don't usually like

My dislike for country is pretty strong, so I'll keep it simple. I can't place why, but I really enjoy watching this video too...might need to watch it a couple more times. Bonus points if you can figure out what 90s blockbuster this was on a soundtrack for.

I don't like country music, which that KIND OF is. It's the closest thing I can get.

I'm not a huge rap fan, but I listen to enough rap that I can't claim to dislike the genre.

Day 19
A song about a person

I'm not going to go with a hard and fast rule that the person's name has to be in the song; you can usually tell in the lyrics of a song that someone else served as a muse for the songwriter. Such is the case with the one I chose, which also reminds me of my last ex...not really a good thing. LOL  :o

I'm going with a cut from a. 2010 release from John Mellencamp, A Graceful Fall

He traveled the country to old recording schoolhouses, studios, rooms, places where blues legends like Robert Johnson made his finest recordings. Used similar equipment, researched how and where it was set up, and even where the artists stood. That's a genuine passion that shouldn't go unnoticed in my book.
Love this track and the lyrics are about as bluesy as it gets

That Sinister Minister tune I'd slide into more of the Bluegrass category; they're described as a Jazz Fusion/Bluegrass/Jam Band...I was typically more partial to their Jazz stuff and had seen them open for Dave Matthews Band a few times (jam band), but this one had me hooked. Vic Wooten is an absolute wizard on the bass.

I realize this one is saturated in ur brains, but to me, there are few songs that tell a story so relatable, so simple and seriously, hasn't this happened to all of us in some form or fashion?
It always reminded me of Gilley's honkey tonk here (Urban Cowboy anyone?)
"You could hear me screamin a mile away as I was headed out towards the door" is a lyric that gets a smile if not a laugh every single time I hear it because it paints such a great visual. Van Zant didnt get enough credit as a song writer IMO

Yea lots to choose from here. I was gonna go modern with holiday, even though I despise green day, and One is always at the top of discussions like this, but again, I'm going with a ubiquitous choice.
Fortunate Son, CCR.
Mainly because nothing pisses me off more than rich injustice especially when you play with other people's lives like checker pieces.
Sad thing is, as great as the song is, the morons it was targeting probably loved it because they were too stupid to know they were being insulted. Just like Ronald Reagan with Born in the USA. Dimwit.

Day 30 (A little early but whatever...I work the next two days and I'm not getting home until late so...)
A song about leaving

Once again, this is kind of open to interpretation. I thought about going the cheesy pop route (Separate Ways by Journey, Bye Bye Bye by N'Sync? Still a great tune, I don't care what anyone says  :D), but this one's been in my heavy rotation playlist of late. Why is a complicated story but whatever...  8)
I also love hearing the backstory behind this song and pretty much the entire album.

Fleetwood Mac - Dreams

...and also, thanks to all of you for playing along! I'm sure some of these are going to pop up in their own threads down the road and I'm totally cool with that. Was really hard limiting some of them to one song.

First one that came to mind, Jet Airliner by Steve Miller Band.

Day 30 (A little early but whatever...I work the next two days and I'm not getting home until late so...)
A song about leaving

Day 29
A joyful song

This reminds me of my daughter and we goof around with this one (it used to be her fave when she was little and we bust out singing when it comes on now)
