A buddy told me there's a rumor it'll be the PS Plus game in June, but that's not the most reliable thing obviously. I'm assuming Reddit was his source.

I think there MIGHT be an offline component, but Im not sure. I think the beta is focused on the multiplayer, thus the cross-play component.

Haven't tried this one out yet, but downloaded it on the PS5. It has a free cross-play beta going on right now, specifically for PC, PS5 and Series S.

It's a WWII FPS type game, but with an RTS component: you don't control on hero soldier single-handedly winning battles, but instead multiple squads that you can switch between each individual soldier. This includes having a squad of grunts, or a sniper squad, a tank squad, and even air squads eventually (it seems like unlocking the different types of squads is one of the progression systems). Multiplayer combat is a mix of PvE and PvP, as I think it's 5 v 5, but the battlefield contains 100s of AI controlled soldiers (that, again, you can swap between).

Pretty neat concept for a game, excited to try it out. Watched a gameplay video to get an idea of it and seems like it's at least worth the look:

So my boss messages me during work on Thursday and says "I can't stop buying PS5s because getting them is so satisfying, but I never play them because I prefer my XBox Series S." He then tells me how he's had 3 so far, and given away two to two other co-workers and, hey, would I like the third one?

And that's how I came to have a PS5 in my house today.

I remember the old EA college baseball game on PS2 (oh yeah) had a stadium creator. Naturally I made my outfield walls WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to far out. Corrected the problem later by making them WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too far in, because balance is important.

I've been more than happy with my Switch purchase so far. Pac-Man 99 has been a blast during the moments I get to play it. Also can't wait to pick up the Mario Golf game in a couple months too.

Extremely excited for Mario Golf, and love both of the 99 games. I've only gotten so far as 8th in Pac-Man (once, my ONLY time doing better than being in the 30s, so I guess it was a fluke).

what is Switch? I have no idea lol

Going to approach this seriously and hope I haven't been taken in by sarcasm :D

So after the Wii U, Nintendo came out with the Nintendo Switch. Initially there was one version, now there are two (soon to be three). At a low level of explanation:

Nintendo Switch - the original. Basically, a large handheld device that has a separate dock (sold WITH, I think, but a separate physical piece) so that it can be played both on-the-go, and via a TV through the dock connection. Comes with two very small controllers called joy-cons, and has other controllers that can be bought (the "Pro" controller being the most Xbox/PS like). I'm not a huge fan of the joy-cons myself. Has some internal storage, and MicroSD support for add-on storage.

Switch Lite - this is what I own. I use my PS4 (and eventually PS5) for most of my big AAA games and co-op games (Apex Legends, Overwatch, etc), so I wanted something solely for the on-the-go or "I just want to play on the couch while we watch irreverent TV" type of deal, and that's the Lite. CANNOT be docked or hooked up to a TV in any way, you can buy external controllers for it but like a Gameboy, the controls are built into the device on purchase. Little more battery power for on-the-go, little less processing power though so games can be a bit more clunky (I've definitely noticed this with Apex compared to watching others with an actual Switch). I'm very happy with it, because it's exactly what I wanted, and the Nintendo eShop has a robust selection of great indie games, a lot of pixel-based ones too (The Messenger, Shovel Knight, Into the Breach...a lot of indies of the same type I used to buy on Steam).

That being said, I did recently buy a bunch of Mario games, and they play smoothly on the Lite (Mario Maker 2, Mario 3D World, Mario All-Stars which is no longer on sale as of March 31st because Nintendo is weird....)

Nintendo Switch...Pro? - not much known about this, but basically supposed to be a stronger powered version of the regular Switch, to compete with PS5 and XBox S, although not to win that competition. That being said, I think this is mostly hearsay at this point and hasn't OFFICIALLY been unveiled yet, although I could be wrong, I haven't fully followed it.

Sounds like I should keep playing MLB 19.

This kind of explains the push to have The Show 21 on XBox Game Pass, if they're going for this monetization heavy style (seems to be the way all sports games are going, although we see how Madden 22's "renewed focus on Franchise" works out).

Remember the Tae Bo fad?

I think I was a kid back then but I definitely remember the commercials (that was Billy Blanks, right?)

Honestly, way back in my Navy days (so...................literally over a decade ago), I used that "Beachbody Insanity" with Shaun T at home, and lost a ton of weight. I pirated it back then, not sure how easy or tough that is these days but it was a great at home workout for shedding weight. Sure there was some muscle building too there but it wasn't the main focus (whereas I think P90x, at the time, was considered the muscle builder). Plus Insanity didn't require any additional items (no weights or cables or anything), just a full body workout.

Thought we had a thread about books but it appears we only have book reviews, which is fine, but I'm not done with this book so I can't really review it, so I guess I'll double up on replies here -

I bought a few books that I haven't read yet during this pandemic, mostly focused on historical pop culture and/or generally the 70s. I'm building some sort of curriculum for myself, to what end I don't really know.

Right now I've got The Great Movies III by Roger Ebert on my shelf, and I've started digging into Hoberman's An Army of Phantoms, which is part of a 3-book series (although I missed out on the first book so may need to go back) covering movies from the 50s through the Reagan years. Hoberman's books contain bibliographies, so I'm basically keeping track of other books he references in his notations (as well as movies he spends extended time on), and am building out a Goodreads list of books based on those books, and a Letterboxd list of movies based on those references, which I'll do with each book as I go.

I've got a few lists on Goodreads started of books I've read up on that I either want to buy about the 70s:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/16962625-michael-grella?ref=nav_mybooks&shelf=70s-reads

or about movies and their history around that time period:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/16962625-michael-grella?ref=nav_mybooks&shelf=movies-tv-want-to-read

Or general past culture (more music than movies, but there's a few bits I'd like to read more about certain people. As you can tell from the list, The Andrews Sisters are one of those I'm curious on):
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/16962625-michael-grella?ref=nav_mybooks&shelf=movies-tv-want-to-read

Assuming I ever read all of these, and/or more, what will I do with this knowledge? i don't know. Maybe I'll win more bar trivia. But it interests me, so, here I go.

Console Gaming Discussion / Disco Elysium

Has been out on PC for a few years, although I've never played it. Picked it up yesterday and played for about 2 hours or so. Easy to tell this is a LONG game (I'd imagine around total RDR2 playthrough time, if not longer, but I don't fully know yet).

You play as a detective with a serious alcohol problem in a dystopian city, as you navigate various social and political entities and environments as you attempt to catch a murderer (or murders? Maybe?) I'd been waiting for this to come out on PS4 since the console release was announced, and so far haven't been disappointed.

RDR2 was well-noted for just the amount of vocal work in the game, amongst the main cast and especially the extras/side characters, and Disco Elysium is no different ("Disco Elysium has added full voice acting and new quests in the Final Cut update. Fascinating detective RPG Disco Elysium today becomes bigger and fancier with its Final Cut, released as a free update. The Final Cut adds voice acting (one million spoken words, they claim"))

You have 4 different stats (Intelligence and Psychology, which I put all my points into, then Strength and I think....Motivation?), and with those stats comes extra skills that you upgrade with skill points earned via XP (Currently I have the Suggestion skill upgraded 2 points, so I get extra dialogue options with the potential to basically incept the people I'm talking to).

Like I said, not very far myself, but if you're looking for a single player game with a ton of detail, easy to learn and play (there's a lot going on but it never feels like a burden, and the UI is simple and intuitive) and that'll last you a bit, can't go wrong here.

I have been pretty potato-y during the whole pandemic. It's strange though, we went snowshoeing back in January during a small vacation (AirBnB, out in the mountains), and I felt pretty good.

This weekend, we went to a tulip festival and did some grilling outside on Sunday, and my legs and, strangely, my arms were SO SORE yesterday. Just a shit ton of tension in my shoulders, and this weird pain around my left bicep. Naturally I feel fine today because I guess it was just more activity than my body's used to lately, but YIKES.

So anyways I'm finally starting the most minimal workout routine since I'm WFH anyway (a few exercises with a set of just 5 reps for each hour of work) which, I'll increase week to week to, not to GET JACKED or LOSE ALL THE WEIGHT, but apparently to put my body back into just a state of "can handle the slightest uptick in physical activity," because damn.

I'm always around, even if I don't talk as much (I wish I had your guys love and appreciation of music...) Still, especially during this pandemic but even before, it's been really nice to have BSB still here and to shoot the back and forth with you guys (with surprise appearances by BBB and Tider that one time).
