Title: 30 Days of Video Games Thread
Post by: BojackHorsefella on April 17, 2018, 12:00:40 PM
Alright, I'm doing this. Lets hope I don't run out of ideas for all 30 days.

Let's start simple.

Day One: The First Video Game You Can Remember Playing

So, this isn't owning, this is playing, and it can be anything, whether it was Donkey Kong at the arcade or Donkey Kong on console, if it's a game that's on a TV that uses some sort of controller scheme, it counts. Even those little handheld Mattel ones from back in the day.

Anyways, the first game I can remember playing is from the Atari...2600, I believe? It was called "Freeway," and was basically Frogger, but with a chicken.

Day One: The First Video Game You Can Remember Playing

I was maybe four or five at the time, but I always think of a Howard Johnson's diner/rest stop on a road trip. Either my dad held me up or propped me on a chair while I played either Asteroids or Space Invaders. Fairly certain it was Space Invaders.

Day Two: Favorite Video Game Athlete

So, this can be anything. Maybe it's Bo Jackson in Tecmo Super Bowl. Maybe it's Madden 2004's Michael Vick. Or maybe it's Bowser in Mario Kart. It could even be one of your Road to the Show creations. Just some character participating in a sport that you enjoyed controlling in the game.

For me, I have to go back to NCAA 2002 to Madden 2002, where I had a RB with the Florida Gators named Scott Cordes. Coached him through three years and then drafted him to my expansion team on Madden 2002, where he eventually went on to break Emmitt Smith's career rushing record.

I cant really recall anything that sticks out here right now bu I guess Id go with the one Im mostly invested in which is my current RTTS guy Ive run for 11 seasons now over what, maybe three, four versions of MLB?
Im going after Ricky Henderson's all time stolen base record. I wasn't able to touch his season high but did break 100 once.

I forget his name but the quarterback I had in NCAA 09. I one season I had him pass for over 3000 yards and rush for over 1500 yards.

Day Two: Favorite Video Game Athlete

TUFF Media Personality/WR Devon Holmes  8)

I couldn't even tell you what game we ran TUFF on anymore, and the PC with all my old TUFF files is long gone...but I do remember that he did help the Chicago Skyline (formerly Ann Arbor Aces) win the TUFF Bowl one season in a ridiculous shootout with the Baltimore Battalion.

There's your dose of BSB nostalgia for today.

you sir are correct and it also had a boxed version called season ticket football for a season.

Tuff was spun off of Sierra Sports FBpro 98 league MLF, and out lived it and outshined it. 2 fun leagues. cant remember who all was in my MLF but the TUFF had some great times.

For real. Would be cool if Ben, Dom, Daryl and Phenom were all still here. Granted, I disappeared too, but, you know.

Alright, Day 3, and I'm already running out of things to ask

Day 3: Name a Game That Made You Sad/Cry

For me, this is a tough one. I'm torn between two games, but I think I'll go with the one from my favorite series.

Metal Gear Solid

The final battle, facing Liquid Snake, and an unlikely ally gives his life to save yours. I don't want to go into spoilers because they remake MGS all the time and you guys should at least play the first one if you haven't, but, ugh, I don't remember what grade or how old I was but I know it got the water works going.

Day 3: Name a Game That Made You Sad/Cry

Other than NHL 2K3 when I launched my controller against the wall after losing a Game 7 OT Cup Final thriller to Toronto and then remembered how much it cost for a new controller?

Probably Season One of Telltale's Walking Dead. Had quite a few emotional moments in that one, but in the first episode when you go through the house where the little girl Clementine is, you can hear the answering machine play a few messages from the parents to the girl and the babysitter that was watching her. It's a little time capsule of the world breaking down and I just remember sitting there and saying 'wow' as the messages played.

ala concussion who used to roam these parts lol
Day 3
Only thing I could come up with was NCAA 14 because it was the last version.
Or, also the day Madden went down the shitter, that was a tough day too lol

*edit to add

ok serious answer would probably be The Last of Us

Day 3: Name a Game That Made You Sad/Cry

Aerith's Death scene in Final Fantasy VII.

I don't normally get overly emotional about games, but i remember dropping the controller, with tears in my eyes, over the fact they actually killed one of the main characters. And only halfway through the game at that.

Even now, knowing that it's going to happen, I still get a little emotional during that scene.

Day 4- Best Value Game

Sometimes, you buy a game like Grand Theft Auto V, that's $60, and between the massive single player and the even more massive multiplayer, you feel like you got it for a steal. Sometimes, you find a game on Steam for a dollar that you think may be fun, and you end up playing it for months on end.

So what game did you get the most value out of, whether it was low price, great content or even big price, but even bigger content, whatever it may be?

For me, I think one of the best deals I've gotten was Shadow of Morder Complete Edition, which I got for about $10. A pretty large base game complete with full DLC, I got it on sale sometime last year and played through the game in a matter of months. I didn't complete all the DLC, but it's there if I ever want to come back to it.

I thought about my Uncharted trilogy also, which I got on sale for $9 total. Three really good games, but Uncharted doesn't have the DLC or open world of Mordor.

Day 4- Best Value Game

Fallout 4.

Got this day one, and only paid $5 for the game and season pass. Traded in a bunch to reduce the price. For probably a year and a half this was practically the only game I played. I've done four play through's of the main story, and two for each of the story DLC's. I still occasionally fire it up but I mostly now just scavenge for crafting materials to build up the settlements.

With trade ins and coupons, I once obtained MLB for 7 bucks, but Im not sure thats what you're looking for here.
The games I enjoyed and played the longest, Id have to say tops was The Warriors. That game was so damn fun and even the actors performed voice acting for their characters.
GTA V, Burnout Paradise and probably Destruction Derby on the PSOne would round out this list.
Title: Re: 30 Days of Video Games Thread

Ah, Destruction Derby, the game where you had to link PlayStations if you wanted to do multiplayer. Yup, you needed two TVs and two PlayStations.

And The Warriors, interesting. I remember when that game came out, seeing it on the shelves at work (shout-out Circuit City). Surprised to hear that one.

Probably Mass Effect 2 for me. This really was one of those games/series I had zero interest in since it was X360 exclusive from the beginning. Even when they started off on the PS3 with ME2, the game wasn't on my radar. But it wasn't until I saw an article and previews for ME3 that I thought I should look into it, and luckily by that point ME2 was available for pretty damn cheap...may have picked it up for around $10 after a couple of trade-ins. Was hooked into it the moment I started playing it and didn't look back.

Ack, forgot to do this yesterday!

Day 5 - Favorite sports game

Again, doesn't have to be Madden or MLB, it could be Mario Golf or Mario Kart or Mario Tennis or....you get the idea.

For me, as much as I'd love to say NFL 2k4 or 2k5, I have to go with Madden 2002. The expansion draft was just such a fun feature, and building a team from other's leftovers was actually really challenging.

Day 6 - Most Relaxing Game

This one for me is really easy: Flower. I had it on the PS3, and really, there's no better game out there if you want to play a game without ANY of the stress or frustrations that video games can sometimes bring (looking at you, MLB).

Day 5 - Favorite sports game

Easily Burnout Paradise. Put hundreds of hours into this game on the PS3, and where as I'm not playing it as much on the PS4 it's still fun.

Day 6 - Most Relaxing Game

Caesar 3. I find it very relaxing to just load up the free play maps and build a city until there is no more space on the map.

Day 5
Favorite Sports Game

College Hoops 2K8. The depth in this game is amazing and while it's a bit more difficult to find current rosters than it used to be, it's worthwhile. Still plays a great game of basketball and I love that it still has that collegiate atmosphere.

Day 6
Most Relaxing Game

Plague, Inc. I like taking a bacteria or virus and seeing if I can evolve it into something that wipes out humanity. Sounds dark lol but the challenge soothes me and the news scrolls occasionally make me laugh.

Day 5
Favorite Sports Game.

I think there are obvious choices here, but Im going to go back a ways and say PGA Tour Golf 94 I think it was?
In any event, this was a very early iteration of the golf franchise that would become Tiger Woods staple. I believe this was only the second version since the DOS version with 92 being the first. That is assuming IRC.
I spent a ton of time with this game.

Day 6
Most relaxing game

I dont know that I have one of those, seriously.
Who plays games to relax? lol

I gotta have something to counterbalance the continuous stress from MLB. Got my difficulty up to Legend and now can't hit a thing. It's a good thing my house doesn't have baseball bats lying next to a water cooler.

Day 7 - Most Impressive Worldbuilding

So, whether it's the seemingly neverending streets of GTA, the post apocalypse ruins of Fallout or maybe you just want to live in Super Mario RPG's expanded layout of Mario's world, what game world has impressed you most?

Me, I'm going to choose Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Maybe it's a tad dated, but Bioware proving you can make a Star Wars game with no Skywalker's or Solos while also exploring everyday life for ordinary people at each planet you come to, this finally felt like a grand Star Wars adventure. So cool and always a joy to go back to.

Day 6 - Most Impressive Worldbuilding

Star Was: KOTOR was (and still is) a very impressive world build. However since since Buc already took it I'll go with another Bioware game. Dragon Age: Origins.

This game shows that you don't need the vast open world (Fallout, GTA) type of RPG in order to have a very immersive world. Along with the six different starting points, three other key things stick out for me with this DA:O. The isolationist nature of the Dwarf's, and their total misunderstanding of the outside world. Amusing that should you leave the underground that you would fall up into the sky is the biggest one.

The other thing I liked about DA:O is how they took some normal stereo types and turned them around. Elves for example were not the best and brightest of the races, such as with Tolkien, or most other fantasy worlds. No in this elves were treated like dirt, enslaved and blamed for the near destruction of the world. hence the persecution and prejudice towards the Elves. It's not just racial prejudice that they dealt with but prejudice from their own kind the Dalish elves hated the City Elves, stating that they are not being true to their own nature.

There is also the treatment of magic users. in DA:O they are treated as if magic is some kind of a plague that needs to be stamped out, or at the very least controlled. DA:O play's with the notion that magic users are easy to be corrupted, due to their connection to the Fade, making them easy targets for demons.

Day 8 - World You'd Actually Want to Live In

Hyrule and Mushroom Kingdom are constantly under attack. Kirby's Dreamland seems nice but then you have to worry about King Dedede. Grand Theft Auto has some amazing vistas but, you know...the crime.

So, what's a world that's impressive to you that you'd also want to live in? Maybe you don't mind the risks of roving goombas in the Mushroom Kingdom. Hell, maybe you enjoy the peace and tranquility of a post apocalyptic wasteland like Fallout (just, you know, stay close to your vault then I guess).

For me, I don't think I'd mind living in the quiet valley of Stardew Valley. It's peaceful, there's transportation back to the city, and maybe if I became a grand enough farmer, they'd listen to me when I asked for a movie theater.

Day 7
Most Impressive Worldbuilding

Hmm...this is a tough choice to make but ultimately I have to go with Red Dead Redemption on this. The genre wasn't exactly something I would race to play (yep, I've always thought Westerns were cool and all but nothing I'd make it a point to engage in on a regular basis). The world created by Rockstar changed all of that though; this was one of those things I couldn't let go of easily once I was hooked and the in-game world had a lot to do with that. There was so much you could do, and the characters were a treat.

Day 8
World You'd Actually Want to Live in

Mass Effect. I'd love to see this world/universe some few hundred years in the future, getting to work in it as a pilot and travel the galaxy. Other than the Reapers and Geth trying to destroy us all anyway. Still have a bunch of the creature comforts we're used to now too I'm assuming, which is one reason there's no way I could go to a world like Red Dead...I'd be miserable lol.

Day 9 - Favorite Video Game Character

Whether you just enjoy playing as them (Kratos, I guess, might be a good example?) or just enjoy the character (Mario, Link?), who's your favorite video game character of all time?

Mine's easy: Solid Snake. Even though he got the shaft in MGS2 and you weren't really playing as him in MGS3 (not a spoiler, the game is set clearly before his time), what Konami did to flesh out his character and really make you connect with Snake, this hardened bastard soldier of war, is really remarkable. MGS4, playing as Old Snake, was just an incredible experience, and as much as I love MGS's crazy, whacked out story, it just wouldn't be as enjoyable if Snake was a crappy, one-note character. Fortunately, he is not.

Day 8
Toughie here. Assuming I don't have to like the game, Id offer up Sopranos or Uncharted or RDR simply because those environments I really enjoy, but not one I would necessarily survive.
Ultimately though I think LA Noire. Thats one I think I would fare well in and am also fascinated by that era.

Day 9
Since you took Snake, I was going to go with the MW2 character you play as and die at the end but succeed in your mission.
But once you mentioned Link, I thought about it and Legend of Zelda was the first game I remember spending countless hours on, even competing with friends to see who could find the most loot and finish the game first.

Can't go wrong with Link, but MW2 would've been an interesting choice for sure (that wasn't Soap McTavish because he was the first (and I think third?) game. I don't remember MW2's main character).

Day 10 - Worst Game You Ever Played

I was fortunate enough to own the awful Superman 64, a story that rivals that of the Atari E.T. video game. There graphics were bunk, there was a weird green fog covering everything that the developers tried to say was "Kryptonite fog." You can barely control Superman, let alone precisely aim any attack. At any time you could randomly fall through the floor or have a boss battle just freeze. This wasn't uncommon.

Just, incredible trash.

Day 10 - Worst Game You Ever Played

The X-Files Game. It was an interactive live action movie point-and-click adventure video game. All I really remember about it was that the controls were so horrible that it made the game pretty much unplayable.

Most of you won't remember this, but Mike Ditka Football was the worst gaming experience of my life. Video games weren't produced in mass like today so anything you spent money on was it...and I was supremely pissed off about this crapola game.

Sorry folks, things got crazy at work today and then I had some errands after.

Thinking up a topic right now on the spot.

Day 11 - Favorite indie game

Tider's always posting Steam, GoG and Humble Bundle sales, so I'm assuming a few of us are PC gaming or maybe getting our indies from the PS Store.

This one is tough for me. Back when I had Steam I almost entirely played indie games. I think right now I'd have to go with Rogue Legacy.

I enjoy rogue-like games, and this one really leans into that with it's overall build. Each time you die, you start over as a descendant of your now dead character. Every character has certain traits, like ones that make everything look like you're in the Matrix or ones that make you stronger. You purchase upgrades that you keep and I suppose pass down your line.

It took me forever to level up enough to finally beat it, but I did.

Day 12 - Favorite Movie Tie-In Game

E.T. for Atari. Batman Behins in PS2 (I bet you forgot that existed). Captain America: The First Avenger for PS3.

Movie tie-in games are often horrible, but are tradition. What's your favorite one that youve ever played?

For me, I think it might be the original Jurassic Park video game on the Sega Genesis. The ability to play a single player campaign as either Dr. Grant or a velociraptor (guess which one was easier) gave you two different sets of levels and gameplay mechanics which was really cool. It could be a bit unforgiving, but never went full-on unfair, and the controls were actually easy to learn and execute.

Day 13 - Favorite Licensed TV Show Game

Have a feeling this one will mostly be cartoon-related, but there's some great ones out there (including an obvious choice from an AMC show).

But for me, for all my life, one game excels above all else: the Ninja Turtles Arcade Game (later brought to the NES as the second TMNT game.

Released before another tv arcade game and the X-Men arcade game (which I almost went with but I believe, bases on release date and character design, that it came out before the cartoon), all three of which were and are still popular and revered, the TMNT unleashed the original, simple mechanics of punch, kick, special move with the occasional jumpkick used as well.

If you got four players to join on any of these it was always a super fun experience. My man Donatello is still the best.

I consider Walking Dead to be a tv tie-in game, because it certainly wasn't out there when there was only the comic and not the show. It's the "obvious answer" I was referring too. Knew someone would choose it because it's an amazing game.

Day 14 - Favorite Video Game Soundtrack

I expect to see a lot of sports games and GTAs on here, but I have to go with the undisputed king: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.

Day 15 - Worst Soundtrack

Madden 16. Hands down. Yeah, HeavyDirtySoul and that song by "The Wknd" are good songs, but first off, why "I Can't Feel My Face" is on a sports video game soundtrack, I don't know, and the soundtrack is so small overall (as long as you don't include the NFL Films music, which is all I let it play now) that you end up hearing the same songs 20 million times (add in that there's clearly songs not on the soundtrack that play before kickoff of each game and it's really all just confusing and poorly planned, it seems).

MLB used to have amazing soundtracks. This year's isn't bad, but it's not great either.

Yikes, looks like I've got some catching up to do.

Day 10 - Worst Game You Ever Played

Other than Mike Ditka Football which Crewe already mentioned? NHL Stanley Cup on the SNES. I really liked my SNES during the time I had it but they just couldn't get hockey right like it was on the Genesis. This one spun around so much I got dizzy playing it...turned it off and returned it right back to the Blockbuster I rented it from.

Day 11 - Favorite Indie Game

Shadowrun on the Genesis had me hooked for weeks. RPG that takes place in the future with a bunch of magic and tech elements. Lucky to own it again now; just need to get the battery in the cartridge replaced (...planning on doing that with Super Tecmo Bowl and a couple other old cartridges I have).

Day 12 - Favorite Movie Tie-in Game

Aladdin on the Genesis. Both this game and Lion King were great on the Genesis, and just a blast to play. Maybe I'm confused on the whole tie-in thing but Crewe I thought for sure you'd go with Warriors here.

Day 13 - Favorite Licensed TV Show Game

Thought about going old school again, but then realized I just played South Park: The Fractured But Whole a few short months ago. If you're familiar with the show and enjoy it, you'll love this. The humor is the same as the show with something to offend everyone, and while it is an RPG it's pretty easy to pick up what you need to do quickly. First game in awhile where I had a hard time putting the controller down. Also just reminded me I owe tider a review for this lol...whoops.

Day 14 - Favorite VideoGame Soundtrack

GTA: Vice City had a bunch of 80's nostalgia and the soundtrack was perfect for it...barely edges out the soundtrack of NBA Street Vol. 2 for me.

Day 15 - Worst Soundtrack

Most of the NHL games more than likely, but whichever one had "Warriors of Time" gets the edge for being the worst.

Day 16 - Most Innovative Game

There are games that try new things (Looking at you, "Portal") and introduce really cool gameplay elements (Hello, "Braid") that feel like they're playing in a different field than your typical platformers or action-adventures. So what's a game you've played that you feel like it was innovative (and it doesn't just have to be because of gameplay controls/elements, it could just be that you thought the story was extremely innovative and hadn't seen something like that done in games before. It's your answer!)

For me, and this may seem silly considering the two great examples I provided up top, but I'm going to go with Wayne Gretzky hockey for the Wii. I don't know if any of you had it, for some reason it didn't last long because it stopped appearing on shelves, but man was this a fun way to play hockey and with a friend too.

It came with two hockey stick attachments, where the nunchuck sat up top and the Wiimote was towards the bottom. You held it like a real stick, and since it was mostly motion controlled, you used the stick to shoot and check (typically, this would turn into actual checking happening in the room).

You moved your guy with the joystick on the nunchuck still and you still hit B to pass, I think, but shooting was all about actually shooting with the stick.

So much fun.

Ill suggest MGS, thats the 2005 edition I think?
This was one of the first I recall delving into the cinematic experience on that scale. Well, first on a home game system. I remember Dragon's Lair arcade game in the mid 80's that was all the rage.
I think not too long after Uncharted came on the scene and took over, but yea, Metal Gear Solid is my choice here.

Day 17 - Favorite Console/Handheld

Well this is a tough one. First off, feel free to repeat someone else's answer, because there's only so many answers to go around.

For me, I think I have to go with the Nintendo 64, which is weird. When I was a kid, I sort of hated my N64. I preferred the Playstation, I got bored of a lot of the games from playing them over and over again, and of course when the PS2 came out I immediately sold my N64 so I could pay for it (which is an entirely different story of disappointment and betrayal).

But looking back, the N64 was truly one of the greatest multiplayer consoles ever. As a kid, I didn't really care that much, but looking back now (especially in a time when local multiplayer has all but died and online is king), I wish I had the selections I had on that console.

I actually bought one like, 2 years ago, but it was entirely too difficult to go back to. The graphics are nigh unplayable these days (for some games. Mario 64 still looks great despite the blockiness) and the controls just feel downright weird (how did I ever play Goldeneye?)

But, still. Nostalgia rules and the N64 actually did have a great library of games, plus tons of instant classics: Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Paper Mario, Mario Kart 64, Smash Bros, Mario Party...the list truly goes on and on.

Day 17 - Favorite Console/Handheld

The original NES. My dad got one for my sister and I when they first came out and we would literally get into fist fights over who was going to use it. Eventually dad bought a second one just to stop the fighting.

This was to console that hooked me into gaming, I would even skip school just to play games. Mario Bros. 1-3, Castlevania 1-3, Duck Hunt, Legend of Zelda 1 & 2, loved all of them.

I Still have mine, and as far as I know it still works. the unfortunate thing is I don't have a TV that it can be hooked up to anymore.
Title: Re: 30 Days of Video Games Thread
Post by: Crewe on May 03, 2018, 08:13:08 PM

favorite console? I gather you are seeking nostalgia which is difficult for me because I was a big arcade guy before consoles so with advent of gaming at home, each one was better than the next and I owned every single one of them, even the 3DO.
But id have to go with PS3 I guess, just because of the versatility. During the blu ray phase when that was the new hot medium, it was great to get one of the best blu ray players on the market along with what I thought was the best gaming system. Just a ton of value there for me.

Ill just add, I think my PC gaming days were the most fun. The peak was right around Diablo II time. I was in several Madden football leagues for years, played Diablo religiously, was constantly learning about and upgrading my PC, built my own a couple of times. I made a ton of online friends in different areas through PC gaming, was just a ton of fun.

Day 18 - Least Favorite Console/Handheld

So, I'm going to say it has to be a console you owned, not one you played one time at your buddy's house or at KB Toys (REMEMBER KB TOYS?!)

Mine's easily the Sega Game Gear. My brother and I were so excited to have it, but as everyone knows by now, that thing ate batteries like crazy. You were lucky to get MAYBE an hour of play time on it, meanwhile our Gameboys would last nearly an entire trip to Florida on like, maybe two sets of batteries, if even.

Sorry for the slightly uninspired topic today, but it's about to be a busy day at work so wanted to get this out of the way so you guys have time for it.

Day 16 - Most Innovative Game

Wing Commander. One of the first games I ever got to play on a PC, bought it cheap since it was already a few years old. The storyline(s), gameplay (I get to be a space fighter pilot? YES) were all new to me and I was hooked. I loved that the story could change depending on how well or poorly your missions went. Had some great games in this series and a not so great movie came out of it.

Day 17 - Favorite Console

The Sega Genesis. Console of choice during undergrad; the Madden, NHL, Street Fighter II and NBA Jam tournaments my buddies and I had were awesome. Brother and I would team up on Streets of Rage and fly through that game. Also remembered the time my brother and I played through a season of NHL 95 trying to win as many games as possible and not knowing about the 128 point glitch until the season was over and us out of the playoffs.  >:(
Ah, the memories. :)

KB Toys...wow. Definitely remember that place.

As for least favorite out of ones I've owned? Probably the Game Boy Advance...no backlit screen was a bit of a downer, plus there really weren't many games I was interested in released for it. Playing Super Dodge Ball on it was fun, but other than that? Gave the PSP a shot a few years later but even that didn't hold me for long either.
I just might not be all that into portable gaming in general. Current phones are more than satisfactory for any game I'd want to play on the go.

Least favorite console.
I can't really think of one I hated that I owned. Handheld gaming was never for me as I was the older crowd when it became a thing so I never owned one except for the Mattel devices in the 70's.
I'll break your rule in order to nominate the Dreamcast though. Never bought it because I knew I'd hate it. That count? 😎

I think I'm going to go with the first Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. I know CoD and Battlefield and FPS games in general have gotten lazy and plentiful, but back then this game was a freaking beast. Basically what Fortnite is today. .

The levelling up system, the small maps that forced confrontations, kill streak bonuses, it was unreal. It was absolutely mayhem and it was glorious.

I wish I could enjoy these games like I used to, I just don't get into FPS games or play online anymore (stupid paying for PS Plus plus not having a gaming PC anymore). But man, back when this was all the rage, I couldn't stop playing.

lol nope! Just trying to participate.

For multiplayer, Ill say Burnout paradise. Had a blast, especially with the BSB crewe, good times.

Day 18 - Least Favorite Console/Handheld

PSP. I got one when it was released cause I really thought it was going to be great. Between the poor battery life, extremely long recharge time, UMD disc, and lack of support from Sony, this has peen collecting dust sine about 6 months after purchase.

Day 19 - Best Multiplayer Game (online or local)

Gotta agree with Crewe, Burnout Paradise, was a blast.

Best Multiplayer Game (online or local)

Battlefield 3...had some great battles and runs with some of the people here.
But damn we had some awesome leagues here too: NHL like Buc mentioned, some great NCAA leagues including TUFFc.

Day 20 - Favorite Controller

This will either be interesting or we'll all have the same answer.  Btw, disappointed in Nut and Tider for choosing the same as Crewe for the last one. Plenty of multiplayer games to fall back on. Today's is more limited.

As much as I want to be contrarian and go with the N64 controller, I have to be honest and go with the Dualshock 3. Wireless, no dumb share button or touch pad like the 4, and easily the most comfortable.

Day 20
Favorite Controller

the Dualshock 4...not sure why but the weight of the controller makes a difference to me. The speaker on the controller is surprisingly crisp, and I like how certain games have used it as a radio comm of sorts.

...and I can't really fault those guys for picking Burnout's online, that was some fun stuff. If I'd have gotten a bit more into the online portion of that game the first time around I might've leaned that way too.

favorite controller?
I really don't recall having an issue with any of them except the Xbox controller.
The PS4 controller is fine for me,I like it and like norm said the speaker is kind of a neat feature. if there was one thing Id try to fix it would be the ends that rest in your palms are slick and if you sweat at times like me, it can be a pain in the butt.

* Edit - I just googled a few to refresh my memory and after looking back I can honestly say that yes, PS4 is my favorite controller.
The PS3 was good, but the 4 is just feels more substantial to me.

Day 20 - Favorite Controller
I will say the 360 controller. I use it to play on steam. I do love the ps3 and ps4 controllers and I do like the Xbox one. all 4 are interchangeable. I could also say the SNES controller because that was my favorite for a long time. Out of all the controllers out there the only one I can recall hating was the n64.

Burnout paradise was a fun game. I could have went with starcraft also.

Unless it's an MMO like Star Trek or the Elder Scrolls I rarely do multiplayer any more. And since I solo play MMO's, I don't consider them to be multiplayer.

Day 20 - Favorite Controller

Gotta agree with other's the PS4 is my favorite. I think that all the PlayStation controllers have been very well designed and with each generation Sony has made slight improvements to the controller to make it just that little bit better.

Day 21 - Favorite Videogame Weapon

Maybe you just think it was cool to use Bond's famous PPK. Maybe you're still reliving the days of ruining everyone's day with Halo's energy sword. Either way, what weapon did you enjoy most in a game?

For me, easily one of the coolest guns in a game was Perfect Dark's Farsight. It was able to see and lock onto heat signatures through walls, but in order to use it you lost all peripheral vision, so it was always a trade-off of defense to have a perfect offense. It was a great way to make a powerful gun and then find a simple way to make the choice of using that power difficult.

The Mini-Nuke from Fallout 4. Cause Nothing says FU like a portable, shoulder mounted, Nuclear weapon.

Day 22 - A Game From a Genre (Or Sport) You Don't Normally Play

What's a game from a genre or a sport you don't normally play that you'd care to hype up or remember here?

For me, Fight Night Round 3 was the pinnacle of this. When that game came out, I was working at Circuit City. We'd just set up a second Xbox 360 display in the TV department and my manager, rather than buy his own, would buy 360 games and then a couple of us would stay after we closed and play. Gears of War, naturally, was a big one.

But Fight Night Round 3 kept us all coming back. There were about 4 or 5 of us (and one night we had our buddy Jimmie, who worked at Radioshack, come and play too). The fighting felt completely realistic and the matches were so close. It's kind of amazing, much like real boxing, that we didn't start betting on the matches.

Granted, somewhat unfortunately, one of the guys switched from analog controls to button controls and would use Marvin Hagler, so he had so much speed he became pretty much unstoppable and the rest of us were too stubborn to switch (we wanted to play the "pure" way). That being said, I came closest to beating him with Jake LaMotta, who was my go-to on that game.

So much fun. Never actually bought or played another Fight Night (well, I lie, I did have it on my PSP, but I played that damn thing like....maybe twice?)

Day 22 - A Game From a Genre (Or Sport) You Don't Normally Play

I'm going all the way back to the Saga Genesis for this one and say NHL '95.

Weather it was solo league play or or a multi-player with my bud's, this game was a blast.

The best memory I have of this game was in league play with the Oilers, leading them to a perfect season, dominating the playoffs, and losing game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals 1-0 on a last second goal. It's a good thing controllers were only $5 back then cause the one I had ended up all over the room.

Also a friend and I would go head to head all the time. we'd play with penalties turned off, 20 minute periods, sudden death overtime, and NO goalies. We'd do this just to see how high we could get the combined score. I think a combined total of almost 200 points was the highest we got.

I've tried a couple of NHL games since then but they just haven't had the same feel, or fun factor.

I remember Fight Night although I don't think I went as high as the 3rd version.
Something I don't normally play?
Jet Moto 2 is one that we used to play in vs mode that was an abundance of fun, but it wouldn't have appealed to me otherwise.
I think that was for the PSOne IIRC

Day 23 - A Sequel That's Better Than the Original - Modern Franchises

So, quick descriptor: by "modern franchises," I mean any franchise founded since....say Playstation on. So no Mario or Legend of Zelda.

I'll go ahead and take the answer everyone probably knows I will: Metal Gear Solid 4. Not only is it somehow superior to Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation, which was my favorite up to that point, it manages to tie in gameplay elements from the three prior games while also tying up every single loose end story-wise. Add in the trip to Shadow Moses, the setting for the first game, and you really just have the complete and total package.

I have a couple here, but can only recall one title, so Ill go with Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2. I believe that was the Call of Duty series.
It started out with a great first person cinematic abduction and execution which leads to the campaign. I really enjoyed that game, went through it again as I recall and I rarely do that.
The other was one of the early iterations of the WWII genre, or at least one that set the bar, IMO. The campaign directed you through the European assault beginning with D-Day, but for the life of me I cannot recall the name of it. Was that one of the Medal of Honor series?

Day 21 - Favorite Videogame Weapon

Ryu's "Shoryuken" (Rising Dragon Fist) in Street Fighter II. Damn near devastating in this game since it could pass through projectile attacks

Day 22 - A Game From a Genre/Sport You Don't Normally Play

Final Fantasy VII. Never was really into RPG type games, and it's not really my thing now either...but this one was an exception. Tried it on a whim and couldn't put it down.

Day 23 - A Modern Franchise Sequel That's Better Than the Original

Batman: Arkham City. Granted this is like picking between movies Godfather I/II for me because Arkham Asylum was excellent, but City had a more open playground, it improved on the moves you could pull off as Batman, and the story was incredible.

it was on a console and not as far back as PSOne, at least I don't think it was that far back. Im thinking it was either on the 2 or 3.
And no, no hill, Brothers in Arms doesn't sound right. the campaign was essentially the same as Easy Company's traipse through Europe beginning with Day landing

Day 24 - A Game You're Terrible At

Sometimes you play a game at a friend's house or you buy one thinking you'll enjoy it, and then you end up being awful at it and hating it. So, what's yours?

Mine, for all of my life, is and will most likely always be: Street Fighter. I know these days it's even worse with online play REALLY letting you know how bad you are, but even going back to Street Fighter II, I've always been terrible. I certainly haven't bought any Street Fighter games since, and while I may have played one or two at an arcade or at a friends, I have no desire to actually own these games.

So yeah. Street Fighter II is my pick. Forever and always.

lol nut, thats me too pretty much. And I used to be so awesome at those, but my eyesight got to be too bad where I couldn't focus on everything and by theme I figured it out, I was dead lol
Thats another reason why I like solo campaigns instead of online.

A game Im terrible at would be, any aviator game basically. it all started with Top Gun way back when and that blasted carrier landing.
I was pretty decent at one of those first Star Wars PC games that was so damn immersive and popular, but for the most part Im pretty stinks in the air.

Maybe not a game, but I've gotten a lot worse at the stealth parts of missions in games like Arkham Asylum and Battlefield 1. Wasn't super great in the first place, but I gave up playing story mode in Battlefield 1 and Wolfenstein II because the stealth missions were a bit much.

Day 25 - A Game You Wish They'd Make A Sequel To

Most blockbuster games these days get a sequel that continues their story. Sometimes, though, there are games that don't. They may have games that are sequels in spirit (think anything by Team ICO) but not a true sequel.

So, what's a game you've played that you loved and wished there was a sequel for, but there isn't (and don't say Half-Life 2 Episode 2 or plain Half-Life 2).

For me, I think a game I would have liked a direct sequel to would have been Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. I know it was based on the novel, still, I feel like there's more stories that could be told about Dash Rendar, and not only that, but the game was fun to play. It was the first fully immersive 3D Star Wars game I'd played, having never played the Jedi Knight games, and switching from Dash to the Outrider to a snow speeder on Hoth was just so cool. I do remember the game getting a bit grindy in the later levels, but that could easily be improved upon.

lol oh, I heard talk, didn't know it was definite.
ok then, I was going to suggest Burnout, but since they had a reissue recently, lets go with The Sopranos.
The first attempt was absolute crap, a pure cash grab. Poorly thought out gameplay design, shitty graphics, even for 2006....or was it 2007? I think it was right as the series ended, or right before. In any event, it truly sucked.
2 gaming console generations later, and storytelling becoming central to games now, I think someone could really come up with a top product in a genre that is sorely missing from the industry.

Better?  8)

I would absolutely play a Sopranos game that takes place after the finale. Firstly, we would confirm Tony's dead (he absolutely is, btw), secondly, I feel like the power void that leaves could set up a very interesting storyline. Plus, imagine driving in your car, GTA style, through all the scenes from the opening?

I feel like Chase would never allow the ending to be played off like that, but that would be cool to do the GTA thing.
Now that I think about it, probably the only way a Sopranos video game gets made would be to either take place during the series which wouldn't work because, no Gandolfini, or, the ubiquitous suggestion about the movie which is a prequel, dating back to Tony's dad, Johnny Boy and Uncle Junior Soprano. I think that would be worthwhile, sort of an LA Noire vibe to it.

Day 25 - A Game You Wish They'd Make a Sequel To

Was originally going to say Shadowrun (the PC/X360 that dropped in 2013 doesn't count), but thought of a better one...Sleeping Dogs. It was a PS+ free game sometime in 2013 on the PS3, and damn I was hooked. Elements of GTA with an awesome crime story and combat reminiscent of Rocksteady's Batman series, taking place in Hong Kong. You played an undercover cop trying to help take down the Triads, and had to balance the criminal underworld life with the police life.

We all hate Navi from Ocarina of Time. Natalia was the WORST on escort missions in GoldenEye.

But who's a sidekick that doesn't suck?

For me, I have to go back to Ocarina of Time and say Epona. She comes when I call for her, she's super fast and makes travelling so much easier, and I can still attack enemies even while on horseback.

Day 27 - A Game You Never Finished

Pretty straight forward. Obviously we all probably have a lot of games we never finished so this can go a lot of places.

I'm going to go with one that's haunted me forever. The N64 just came out. My mom said we could get one but we'd have to sell our NES, SNES and Genesis. So, my mission before that happened was to best Killer Instinct on the SNES with every character.

Then she got us the N64 and it was time to sell the rest. I almost did it too, but the only character I didn't beat it with was the tomahawk guy (can't remember his name. It may even have just been Tomahawk). I even made it to the final boss but lost. Never got the chance to try again.

A game I never finished?
I know there's a few, but I think the one that frustrated me the most was Killzone 2. It was a fun game but it seemed there was a boss level I could not navigate.
Rainbow Six Vegas was another, but that was more from a disappointment viewpoint.

Day 27 - A Game You Never Finished

I could list a ton of games here, and I still have quite a few of them, holding on to them with the very slight hope that I may get to finish them eventually...but for this one, I'll go with XCOM. Starting that game a few weeks before I went back to school was a really dumb idea.

Day 25 - A Game You Wish They'd Make A Sequel To
XMen Legends 2. It needs to be a trilogy. For that matter a remake. I know there is marvel ultimate alliance 1 and 2 and great games but come on.... do it

Day 26 - Favorite Videogame Sidekick
Daxter from Jak and daxter. My kids loved that game when they were little and my son liked that character so I guess I do too :)

Day 27 - A Game You Never Finished
Deus Ex Human Revolution - Yeah this one I loved the game, it is an awesome game. I got on a boss I could not beat and put it down and have not picked it back up. I need to play the game again, it was awesome except that damn boss lol. She kept going invisible.

Day 28 - A Game You've Finished Multiple Times

Easy one for me: Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation. And not just on the PlayStation. I bought the complete series for PS3 AND PS4 just so I could play this again and again. It's easily my favorite game of all time, I love the story and the gameplay, even the basically top down camera doesn't bother me. It's one of the few stealth games to actually get stealth right, and it even encourages you to replay as a choice you make in the game will either get you an invisibility cloak for the next play through or a gun with unlimited ammo (or both, if it's your third time through).

Ive never completed a game more than once. Only one I recall coming close to was Modern Warfare 2, or perhaps Medal of Honor.

Day 27 - A Game You Never Finished

Final fantasy: Tactics

I still having an original PS1 copy, and the PSVita version. Although I still have not finished this game.
For some reason I just cant bring myself to do it. Every time I tell myself I'm going to I play it for a week or so  and then don't touch it for quite a wile. When I do get back into it I tend to start all over from the beginning instead of continuing from where I left off.

Day 28 - A Game You've Finished Multiple Times

Final Fantasy 4

Back when it was known as Final Fantasy II on the SNES.

I've played this game to death and it's not even my favorite one in the FF series. However it was one of the few games I had on the SNES.

I was 19 and living on my own, between rent and food I could not afford much else. So FF4 became my go to for gaming entertainment.

Day 28 - A Game You've Finished Multiple Times

Going the arcade game route and saying Double Dragon II. Dumped a lot of quarters into that game when I was growing up and beat that game a bunch of times. When I found out I could purchase it on PS4 (the arcade classic version), I bought it on sale and beat the game a few more times. The old tricks still work lol.

Now that was one game that ate my quarters in a hurry and I *maybe* might've gotten past the first level. Lol

Day 29 - A Game You Intended To Buy, But Didn't

Fairly straight forward. Sure there can be a whole range of answers for this through the years.

My answer: Donkey Kong 64. After 3 great games on the SNES, DK64 was expected to be the pinnacle of the 64's power. Instead, we basically got a Mario 64 clone that was absolutely bloated with things to do yet it lacked the ease and ingenuity of those SNES DK games. I rented it, hated it, and never did end up buying it.

it was one of the Battlefields, one that was highly touted, 4 I think? I intend to, but after it came out, the reviews fizzled sans the shills and I just never went back. Games were being developed quicker and quicker too, so the next great thing was always around the corner and then single player campaigns began to dissolve with focus directed to online gamers and I just kinda meandered on out of buying video games frequently and just bought a few a year which centers around sports titles.

SNES version of Zelda and Crystalis on the NES    I listed both because I was not sure which one I beat more.

I did the same thing!!!! For a time.

I got the first two on PS2 when they had a collector's pack. I had planned to get 3 on PS3, but just never did. Then it went on sale for digital download on PS4 for like, $5 or something I think xmas 2016 or so, something like that, and I finally downloaded it and played through.

Taking the same tactic with the newest God of War. Give it a year or two and see what the price is then.

Day 29 - A Game You Intended to Buy, But Didn't

Only one that really sticks out in my mind is L.A. Noire. Had planned to buy it for PS3 but never got around to it...then thought about purchasing it when the remastered edition for PS4 came out.

Still hasn't happened.

Same.

An ex of mine had it. It was...not great.

I've heard that...I've kind of used my excuse of a games backlog to keep holding off on buying it lol. Someday though (probably not).

lol I was on the fence about that one too, still am I guess. I just remember hearing about the graphics regarding the facial reactions and how advanced it was, but the gameplay left a lot to be desired.

Day 30

WE MADE IT! I know this one got off to a rocky start with the best/worst template I couldn't seem to escape, but I think we finished strong here. As usual, feel free to just talk about whatever videogame(s) you want to here.

I didn't really get a chance to bring it up before, but allow me to use this time to praise Overcooked.

I saw, I think, one of the screenwriters I follow on Twitter raving about this game during the PSN holiday sale and after looking at it I trusted enough that it would be fun and is it ever!

This game definitely is more of a multiplayer game (Tider, you and the whole family would absolutely love it, I feel confident in saying) although it can be played single player as well (although that would be so much more difficult). At it's most basic, it's a game where you're a chef and you're cooking food to order. But it's so much more than that.

The thing I like most about it for me, is my girlfriend and I play it often, and to be truly efficient with your cooking and time management your communication has to be SPOT ON (well, if you want to get 3 stars on a level, anyway). We'd actually taken a break for a bit for one reason or another (*cough* MLB 18 *cough*) but yesterday we picked it back up and after about an hour or maybe hour and a half had completed two more levels at 3 stars (we'll usually move on with just 2 stars, but one time we were only 4 points from 3 stars and another time we were about 12 points and 3 seconds away from 3 stars, so we kept playing the same two levels). It's highly addicting.

Seriously, it's a great party game if you have 4 controllers, if you have 2 it's still a great team game and like I said, even for one person I can still see this as being highly addicting and competitive. Do yourself a favor, the next PSN digital sale, take a look to see if this (and it's seasonal add-ons) is one of the games on sale, and then buy it. You won't regret it.

Day 30

Whatever videogame I want? Okay...I'm going to go with my utter disappointment that NCAA Football 14 is the last college football game we've had and that we haven't had a college sports game for this gen of consoles. We probably won't get one either. I have no problem with Ed O'Bannon, the NCAA is a joke and I'm sorry but these institutions make billions off of them. But that's a debate for a different thread and another day (besides, it's been done). Back to the game itself...

Really feel this game was making strides and as much as we slap EA around they did give us a decent amount of customization for this. The game played a pretty damn good game of football too. Still wish they would've left a bunch of the online stuff up and running (all those teambuilder squads, the chance to mess around with new uniform sets, etc.). But this game/series captured that college atmosphere that just can't be replicated in any pro game.

Funny thing is for all my talk and love about this game, I still haven't finished a single season in dynasty mode yet.  :o Schedule was really busy between work/school/extracurricular stuff that time was limited...so every once in awhile I try to start a new season up; so far I've got the 2015, 2016, and 2017 dynasties up to whatever the first game of the season is for Michigan and I haven't gotten into a single game. I should fix that at some point. :D
