I love the novel and the movie, but being raised by an Italian father from NY, all those monster films were beyond reproach in my home.

That being said, while I disagree with Rigg, I respect his opinion, although I am disappointed for him that he didn't enjoy the movie on the same level as I do, because it is one of my favorite films.

I don't hate it just don't find it to be a masterpiece the way others do.  For Mobster movies I would rather watch Casino or good-fellas. Just my 2 cents but hey life goes on.

Casino and Goodfellas definitely move a lot faster, for whatever their lengths are. Godfather is definitely a time sink.

Here's an unpopular opinion: I believe Casino is BETTER than Goodfellas.

Oh man, Big Trouble In Little China. Woe to he who grabs me a knife, because they'll get to hear me say "That's a good knife. Time to die Mr. Burton."

I think my brother and I think the best line is Jack's "What?! What won't come back?!" after Egg Shen throws the smoke grenade at that monster in the sewer.

Well, I think you mentioned playing guitar in another thread. Do you paint? Write? Love hopscotch? Whatever it is that you could invest yourself in and bring yourself joy.

Howard Stern talks a lot about how his life changed since entering therapy, and one of the biggest things is apparently he liked painting and wanted to do that more, and that's one of the things he does in his off time now. He doesn't share it with anyone (I'm sure his wife, but that's it) because it's solely for him. It's something he enjoys, relieves his stress, and makes him happier than sadder.

I don't mean to oversimplify if it's coming across like I am, but I'd say there's likely something you've wanted to do or enjoy doing that you could either start doing or do more for your enjoyment.

I don't think it's particularly healthy myself, but when I'm stressed out I play videogames. The nice thing about playing on the PS4 is I'm so focused on what's happening on the screen and coordinating my hands and eyes together, that I don't have time to think about the world crashing down around me. It's one of the reasons I prefer playing something like MLB (no matter how infuriating, although less so with the lower difficulty) vs just watching TV, because inevitably I'll find myself fiddling on my phone while watching TV which eventually leads me to the hellhole of Twitter and a reminder that everything is horrible.

I feel like learning to play an instrument is a similar thing that requires 100% focus. Heck, even just reading, if that's your thing. Yeah, inevitably I'll read about 20 pages and then take a peek at my phone, but if the book's good usually it's just a quick perusal of whatever new article's been posted on Gawker (really, io9, Deadspin and/or Kotaku) or here and I avoid Twitter because I want to get back to the book, even as I make sure news from my interests doesn't pass me by.

I don't know, maybe this whole post is a whole lot of nothing. This is my attempt to support, I hope something in here may be helpful, and if not, maybe the effort can put a smile on your face. :)

So, first off, MIGHT want to take a break from Six Feet Under because you may be a little too close to the material right now (or maybe watching it will be cathartic, you're on the final season after all. I dunno).

Death has always been a weird thing to me. I'm terrified of it, yet my fiance almost seems to welcome it (she's not like, skydiving or doing anything risky to bring it forth, it just simply doesn't bother her). I guess it really depends on your perspective. Whether you believe in a better place or just eternal rest, some people find comfort in it. I couldn't say what your friend believed, but maybe, were he able to perceive what has occurred, he wouldn't be bothered or saddened but looked upon it in some positive light.

I lost my grandmother last year suddenly. She was 93, so, I can't exactly say it wasn't her time, but she'd been in perfect health until she just suddenly had a stroke. It even looked like she was recovering fine, but just a few weeks later she was back in the hospital and it was over.

I got you on the dog thing too. I never had a pet growing up, and I never really wanted one. Especially after having a kid, I just didn't see a need for another living thing in my home that I have to feed and clean up after. But, my fiance had a cat when we started dating and we even adopted another, and now sometimes I catch myself ruminating on that inevitable day, because I know we'll both be utter wrecks. I feel like I'm trying to prepare myself, but I guess when you love something and have that close of a bond, you interact daily and you've cared for and nurtured this living being like a child, there's no way to really prepare yourself.

Is it possible that after more tests, it won't be cancer and something they can cure? Or, even if it is cancer, is there any possibility they detected it early enough to cut it out?

Someone somewhere did a most quoted movie (might have been in the 30 Days of Movies challenge) but that was far too restrictive for me. Honestly, so is 5, but, whatever.

In no particular order:

1/2. Christmas Vacation/Vacation- And, honestly, I probably should've used this over Ghostbusters in the other thread, and this might genuinely be my number one. Every Christmas, it was basically me, my dad and my brother just quoting this movie at each other. "Lotta sap! Lotta sap!" I'll also pull a "Russ!" whenever my kid's right next to me and I want to say something to him. He responds to it, too.

3. Jaws - Watching this with kiddo on July 4th, I realized it really is one of the movies my dad and I quote all the time. From the entirety of the Indianapolis speech, to Drefyuss chuckling "They're all gonna die" and his little responses to Quint on the boat ("I'm not gonna take this abuse much longer....."). "You say barracuda, people say what? You say shark...and we've got a panic on our hands." I can just about quote the entire movie.

4. Ghostbusters - I mean, obviously. "That's a big twinkie." "So, she's a dog." I often use the "Nice shooting Tex!" line when playing my brother in NHL.

5. The Three Amigos - Another one we can almost quote. Not a birthday or holiday ever went by without my dad shouting "it's a sweater!" when unwrapping a gift, regardless of whether it's a sweater or not. Steve Martin's "It's real, it's all real" is still great. I actually went to a Three Amigos Quote-A-Thon at Bonnaroo, which was excellent.

Honorable Mentions: Cloverfield - A lot of time when I'm telling kiddo to get ready for us to leave for a movie or something, I'll say "rack 'em and pack 'em, we're phantoms in fifteen!" I don't know, I just loved that line since hearing it.

Moneyball - Almost daily I tell one of my cats, Spooky, "You're a good cat, Spooky, and we wish you all the best," which is what Billy Beane says to Jeremy Giambi when trading him, except substituting "ballplayer" for cat. I'm really just calling the cat a good cat, but it amuses me to add the whole quote to it.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail - it really pains me to put this here. Years ago, this was easily in the #1 spot, but I just don't find many uses these days (it also doesn't help that kiddo hasn't seen it, a mistake I need to correct except the damn thing is only available on iTunes).

Here in Washington, there's a burger chain called Dicks Drive-In (oddly, it actually predates the San Bernardino McD's) that still looks like that old times McDonald's. I love it so much, but every time they hand me my food I always want to go "what's thus? Can't be, I just ordered."

I LOVE The Founder, although a lot of that has to do with my neverending obsession with Michael Keaton (the real Batman, all due respect to Adam West).

Chit Chat / Top 5 July 4th Movies
July 04, 2018, 03:36:31 PM
Lets do this:

#1 - Independence Day. Come on, wasn't going to say anything else.

#2 - Jaws. On July 4th, the beaches will be open.

Honestly that's all I came in here with, so, lets see....

#3 - The Patriot? Right? That's not a bad choice.

#4 - The Sandlot. You know the scene, plus, it's baseball. What could be more American?

#5- Born on the 4th of July. I've uh....I've never actually seen it, I just didn't want to use Live Free or Die Hard in the fifth spot.

Pro Football / Re: Tie goes to the ballcarrier

I can't guarantee the idea is even coherent enough to be grasped, honestly. I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking on this one.

Pro Football / Tie goes to the ballcarrier
July 03, 2018, 01:25:15 PM
You know, I was watching MLB Network a day or two ago, and they were reviewing a close call at third, whether Acuna Jr had gotten tagged while either stealing third or just stretching a base hit by his teammate by going from first to third, but I realized, and granted it's kind of similar to the "inconclusive" mandate of NFL replay, but what if there was simply a "tie goes to the ballcarrier" kind of thing?

I know the biggest complaint about the NFL is how offense oriented it is already, rules-wise (especially rules regarding WRs and QBs), but I wonder, in matters of, say, the Dez Bryant catch and what-not, if it's possible that simply having a "tie goes to the ballcarrier" rule would filter a lot of that out?

Was the QB's arm going forward when he fumbled or no? Too hard to tell? Tie goes to the ballcarrier.

Did he fully complete a catch? Just CAN'T make a decisive conclusion? Call goes to the ballcarrier.

Am I right, or is "tie goes to the runner" not quite as universally applicable as I think it maybe could be?

Weirdos.

Let me further ruin my creditibility, then, and recommend Uncle Drew. Don't expect much from it, but think of it like a 90 minute SNL skit and you can temper your expectations accordingly. But it's fun, got some heart to it, and it's worth it for some of the more tailored to the NBA jokes.

Throwing this out there again: Brooklyn Nine-Nine is pretty damn funny and worth checking out.

My kid's in the middle of watching this so I've heard snippets while he's been visiting. I think the fiance and I will pick it up once we're done with this season of Queer Eye and season 2 of Riverdale. Finally caught up on MasterChef so that's one less show on the list (although we still need to watch the Preacher premiere).

Had some time to kill lately so...

Ready Player One was pretty damn good-not as good as the book (what else is new) but still enjoyable. Like the book, still a ton of 80s nostalgia to see and Steven Spielberg was more than likely the perfect person to direct this. 3.75/5

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom builds on the first reboot and was a ton of fun to watch. Good story, good pace. 4.25/5

Boy, I wish I shared your opinion about either of these. I two started both. :(
