Chit Chat / The Sports Vault Thread
March 14, 2020, 10:43:32 AM
Yes, there's bigger things going on in the world right now, believe me I know. But sports was still an escape for a lot of people (myself included), and the postponement/cancellation of almost every sporting event for at least the next month or so will sting a lot of people.

I saw a tweet Thursday asking what would ESPN and the others do to replace all those live events. I suggested (as did others) just open the vault. So screw it, that's what this thread is for.

Whenever I've got time, I'm going to put up a game that I feel is worthy of being watched. Could be a classic that everyone knows about, or it could be sentimental to you. Feel free to play along. A couple writers I follow on Twitter started doing the exact same thing yesterday; I even thought about posting the game they shared yesterday but I really don't feel like triggering Crewe (think 1992 Wild Card).

Today...I think I'll just go with what they posted today. The Detroit Lions one and only playoff victory since 1957, a shellacking of the emerging Dallas Cowboys. Check out Summerall and Madden when they were still coherent.

Pro Football / Barry Sanders for President
February 29, 2020, 07:28:28 AM
*sigh* My head hurts at how stupid and clueless certain groups are.

https://www.wthr.com/article/confused-fans-rip-garth-brooks-wearing-sanders-jersey-1?amp

Also, I'd vote for Barry Sanders over Bernie Sanders if he were running in the Democratic primary too.

There, a post to offend MAGuhs and Sandernistas alike.

Other Sports / The 2020 Hockey Thread
February 23, 2020, 01:57:12 AM
So one of the more peculiar aspects of NHL rules is the necessity of the Emergency Backup Goalie (EBUG). Teams are typically allowed to dress 18 players, plus two goalies. However, if both your starting goaltender and your backup get injured, the home team typically has one or two in the crowd on contract as the EBUG. The chances of it happening are remote, but it has happened. For someone like me that used to play goal back in the day, it's a fucking dream.

Well, let me introduce you to David Ayres, a 42-year old zamboni driver for the Leafs farm team, and the EBUG in Toronto earlier tonight for the game between the Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes.

https://twitter.com/Sportsnet/status/1231419497267027968

Coming in cold after the Hurricanes goalies both go down, and then becoming the goalie of record when Carolina retakes the lead? Let me say this again: that's the fucking dream. Did it while wearing a Leafs t-shirt under his Canes jersey too. So damn glad I got to catch the final 15 minutes of this one. What a night...props to this guy, and from one goalie to another: cheers.

Here's the final seconds.

Thank you Bobby Lou, this was priceless. :D

Jesus...

I'm conflicted on how I feel about this. On the court, dude was a legend and may be one of the best players I've ever seen. Off the court...you know.

Prayers to his family.

Chit Chat / The 2020 Song A Day Thread
January 17, 2020, 11:23:43 PM
So here's the story: on New Year's Day a friend in FB land decided that he would post a song a day that he liked, no rhyme or reason. Personally, I liked the idea so much I figured I'd start it too.

Made it about six days before I realized that required logging into FB each day, and honestly, fuck FB.

Fast forward to the 17th of January, and I figured what the hell: I'll just start posting it here. Best part about doing it this way? You can participate too. The more music, the better. Anyway, here's Day 1 (for here, anyway).

The Go-Go's - Head Over Heels

I just love this song so f'ing much. It's catchy, it's 80s. The bass line is underrated but delivers. Everybody loved Belinda Carlisle, and I liked her too but damn did I have a crush on Jane Weidlin (Joan of Arc!).

So anyway, participate as much or as little as you want. I hope you do, music is good. :)

Chit Chat / Neil Peart
January 10, 2020, 05:33:20 PM
RIP, Neil Peart...absolutely crushed by this one.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/neil-peart-obit-1.5422806?fbclid=IwAR08-myht0ts8Anqx1Pi1TRRH-xR7pcT4EnJlRmRoYsCrrpogjNW41dEfZ4

I grew up in a predominantly pop household, so I didn't get introduced to Rush and the genius of drummer Neil Peart until high school. But hearing "Tom Sawyer" for the first time (seems like a lot of people got their introduction to Rush with this song) absolutely blew me away and it stuck with me. Absolute legend.

Console Gaming Discussion / NBA 2K20 MyCareer Thread
December 25, 2019, 09:28:53 AM
Currently cruising right along with my Playmaking Shot Creator PG in NBA 2K20, rookie season with my hometown Detroit Pistons (finally!). With a true PG and not a crappy one like the real-life Pistons have in Reggie Jackson, the franchise currently sits at 2nd in the Eastern Conference with a 38-17 record with only one game remaining before the All-Star Break.

Also a first for any of my created MyCareer players, my rookie was named to the Rising Stars Game and is also competing in the Three Point Shootout on All-Star weekend (shooting 42% from 3 will do that). Can't wait to check these out.

Console Gaming Discussion / Jedi: Fallen Order
December 23, 2019, 08:07:32 AM
So Crewe, how are you feeling about this game?

Personally, I like it. The graphics are pretty amazing and the story so far is interesting enough. I'm just stuck on the second planet trying to find a path to the Temple they want you to go to and too lazy to look up how to get there lol (plus NBA 2K20 has monopolized my time).

Video Gaming General / Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
October 29, 2019, 12:33:32 AM
First impressions: this game is f'ing gorgeous.

I did get a bit confused because I was thinking this was a continuation of the Modern Warfare series that started in 2007, especially once Captain Price showed up. Turns out this is a reboot, with a storyline that may have some similarities to the real world. Currently just about to start up a mission in a place called Urzikstan which is most definitely supposed to be Syria, and I'm about to team up with a resistance group much like the Kurds (hope the game doesn't abandon them like a certain idiot did...oops, there I go running my mouth again).

Controls are pretty familiar if you've played any game in this series before. The battles so far have been intense...and maybe I'm slipping a bit because I've died a LOT.

Chit Chat / Podcast Thread
September 29, 2019, 07:38:40 PM
Started listening to a podcast called Business Wars simply because they're currently working on the WWF v. WCW stuff...pretty damn good so far.

Anyone else got podcasts they listen to? I typically don't but I've checked out You Can't Guard Me and Pod Save America.

Tech Talk / New laptop (Surface 2)
September 14, 2019, 05:21:19 AM
So I recently jumped back into the PC/Windows game after a long time affair with Mac (seriously, my 2008 iMac finally bit the dust in early December). Was messing around with an Acer Chromebook for a few months before finally pulling the trigger on a Windows Surface 2 laptop with touchscreen.

What are some apps and games you would recommend? I do have the Office suite. This isn't a serious gaming laptop so nothing super intensive, but something to help pass the time away. Sports sims? Older PC games? Other productivity apps/programs? Hit me.

"IT HAS BEGUN" (Imagine Shang Tsung Mortal Kombat gif here)

Welcome back to year two, and if you're new, welcome here as well! This will be the official thread for picks this season. The rules:

1. Each week will be a selection of 10 games, evenly split between college and pro. In weeks when one or the other is not in session, 10 games will made available from the active league.

2. Each game will be worth one point, with the exception of the Spotlight Game, which will be worth two points.

3. Picks must be highlighted in bold. Picks for each game are due before the kickoff of that game. Picks can also be changed up until that time as well. Not really worried about any of you going back and changing picks, so cheers to all of you.

4. I will update scores each week...but I am human and make mistakes from time to time, so if your score and mine doesn't match let me know. Official standings will also be updated in this first post.

5. First tiebreaker is percentage of picks made correctly. Second tiebreaker is score adjusted without the extra spotlight game point.

6. Winner will receive a PS4/XB1/Switch game of their choice (standard edition, nothing super rare either lol).

Questions? Concerns? Comments? Now's the time to ask.

Good luck!

Overall Standings (through Week 21)

1. tastyfish - 142
2. Norm - 138
3. Bojack - 133
4. Crewe - 131
5. tider - 118
6. rigg - 116
7. swany - 103
8. Wadleydawg - 51

Spotlight Game Wins (through Week 20)

Crewe - 15/22
tastyfish - 15/222
Norm - 15/22
Bojack - 14/22
tider - 12/22
swany - 11/22
rigg - 11/22
Wadleydawg - 4/12

Pro Football / Fantasy Football Keeper Help
August 22, 2019, 08:53:45 AM
So I've been in a keeper league for the last 6 years. This is the first one I remember where I've got some decisions to make, so I'm turning here for some discussion and thoughts on it.

QB: Tom Brady, Baker Mayfield
RB: David Johnson, Kerryon Johnson
WR: Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs, AJ Green
TE: Travis Kelce, Jared Cook

Out of those names, I can keep 5. Where I'm leaning:

QB: Mayfield over Brady
RB: David Johnson
WR: Adams and Diggs over Green, even though Diggs having weak loser Kirk Cousins as his QB has me questioning it
TE: Travis Kelce (everyone gets touches in KC's offense)

Thoughts?

College Ball / College/Pro Pick'em interest
July 22, 2019, 12:36:33 PM
Yes, I figure we'll give this another go. Five college and five pro games for a total of 10 games per week, and for the weeks one of the leagues isn't in session (like the first week of college football season when the NFL is still in their preseason thing) there will still be a total of 10 games. Just like last year, a spotlight game will be worth two points.
)
Working on a tiebreaker; one might be percentage of games picked correctly.

Season will run from Week 1 of college football all the way to the Super Bowl.

Prize will be the PS4/XBox1/Switch game of your choice (regular edition).

If there are any questions, concerns, or suggestions, now would be the time to mention it.

Lastly, now I just need to gauge the interest. Bring in friends you feel could contribute here too, competition is always nice. :)

Basketball Discussion / 2019/20 Season Thread
July 12, 2019, 06:07:48 PM
Gotta love the NBA offseason, players moving left and right...I dig it.

Congrats Crewe, your team got rid of CP3. Not that the West has gotten any easier mind you, but at least his no-title winning ass and that bloated contract won't be Houston's to deal with anymore. :D

Video Gaming General / Retro Arcade Gaming Thread
June 20, 2019, 12:58:27 PM
What compels this thread? Well...Time Pilot.

So anyway, I've been searching for this game for a long time and Chicago does have a bunch of Barcades in the area. None of them, however, had a Time Pilot machine, and that is one of my all-time favorite arcade games. Just hadn't been lucky enough to find it...until yesterday.

Turns out the PS Store finally released a port of that game around the middle of April and I didn't know it until then. $7.99 well spent. :) Add that to my classics on the PS4, along with Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Galaga, and Double Dragon II. Mat Mania is another one from the 80s I loved dumping quarters into, and may pull the trigger on eventually.

What were some of your favorites growing up and on your wish list to see?
