Title: 30 days of movies challenge
Post by: Crewe on March 08, 2018, 11:32:51 AM
riding norms coat tails with approval ;-)
I thought I would continue our 30 day thing with movies.
Some of these will be the same or similar as the music and tv.

Day 1
A movie you are embarrassed to admit you like.

For me, its a chick flick called Steel Magnolias.
A stellar cast but Sally Field once again steals the movie in grand fashion.
This film hits all emotions and is really well done. Even if you dont tell anyone, you should check it out.

I had an ex make me watch Steel Magnolias. I was not amused.

Um......a movie that I'm EMBARRASSED to admit I like. I mean, there's a few movies I like that are awful but I'm not embarrassed to admit I like them.

I'll say one that I've been...having difficulties with lately is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. When I saw this movie in theaters I thought it was absolutely incredible and for all the world it seemed like everyone was in agreement. Then it got nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and suddenly it was boiled down to "that film with the sympathetic, racist cop," which I personally think is a very unfair and simplistic breakdown of the film's overall tone and story.

So, yeah, we'll go with that. Or Brokeback Mountain, but again, I'm not actually embarrassed to admit I like it.

Day 1
A movie you are embarrassed to admit you like

The first Step Up. The only reason I even watched this is because it was one of the three films showing on a flight from Minneapolis to Tokyo in 2007...and for some reason I can't sleep on planes no matter how tired I am. The dancing sucked me in (big shock I'm sure) and the story was decent enough I actually paid attention until the end. Won't go out of my way to watch it but on the couple of occasions I've seen it broadcast on tv since I end up sticking around for awhile. Random fact: Channing Tatum met his wife when they were filming this movie.

Step Up reminds me I could have gone with Magic Mike XXX or XXXL, whatever the numerals were, but again, not embarrassed about liking it. That movie was HILARIOUS.

Day 1
A movie you are embarrassed to admit you like.

Star Wars Episode 1, 2, & 3.

As much as you hear most people say just how bad these were I think they at least they fit the story narrative better the 7 & 8 do.

I also think there should have been a scene where Anakin kills Jar Jar Binks. Would have made the movies a lot better. :D

interesting. You dint like the movie at all or just didnt think the funny bits were funny?

Day 2
An actor/actress whose movie you will see regardless of negative reviews

For me, Tom Hanks. I know every actor can bomb but I will risk it on a TH movie.
It used to be DeNiro, but not so much anymore.

Day 2

Hm...I'd probably go with Michael Keaton, which I suppose is slightly a lie because I skipped American Assassin, but I think he's the closest one.

And as for Steel Magnolias, yeah, I just didn't find it that funny or interesting.

Day 2

Your choices of Hanks and Keaton are ones also, but Robert Downey Jr. is my choice.  In addition to the marvel franchise, his Sherlock movies and Tropic thunder was good also.

The closest would more than likely be Tom Hanks or Helen Mirren.

*EDIT* scratch that, mad at myself for not having him jump right out in my mind...Denzel Washington.

Hitchcock with Rear Window was my first thought, but Im going with Scorsese and Goodfellas. Just a masterful work.

Harrison Ford, He's probably the one actor that I've seen almost every thing he's done.

Legend was the first Ridley Scott film that I saw it was Alien and Blade Runner that truly made me a fan of his.

The Darjeeling Limited

I never saw Zissou or Royal Tenenbaums or even Bottle Rocket and Rushmore. I heard good things but didn't see them (funny thing is, I went back later and saw the first three and wasn't even a big fan of Zissou or Tenanbaums).

But for some reason, when Darjeeling Limited came out, I had to see what this Wes Anderson guy was about. And I loved it. Then I saw Fantastic Mr Fox and Moonrise Kingdom and finally, the amazing Grand Budapest Hotel. Now I can't wait for Isle of Dogs.

Still gotta see Rushmore though.

Day 3
A film that made you a fan of the director

The Prestige...yeah, I know: I should've become a fan of Christopher Nolan by the time Memento (which I still haven't seen, btw) came out, or even Batman Begins, kicking off the greatest Batman trilogy. That movie made me thankful to Nolan for redeeming the franchise that Joel Schumacher nearly destroyed. The Prestige, however, was the one that really made me a fan of his work. I see his name attached now and I'll almost always (still haven't seen Interstellar either and I bought that when it came out lol) check it out...haven't been disappointed yet.

I'm gonna be controversial and go with Wonder Woman.

Look, I liked Wonder Woman. Overall, it's a good movie. But there's obvious plot holes and the third act is severely flawed, so all the "this should be nominated!" talk was just unreasonable.

I understand it's cultural importance, especially with the final box office tally, but let's not pretend it reinvented the wheel.

The Dark Knight.

I know there will probably be a few that disagree with me, but honestly I don't think it was as good as everyone says it was.

I was a decent film, good acting and directing, and a rather well crafted story. However as a solo film it cannot hold its own, and should not be treated as such. It needs both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight rises in order to have any type of coherency, in it storytelling.

Scarface
Okay movie, sure...but c'mon. Never saw it when it was originally released so I don't recall much of the early 80s culture at the time, but this got really popular again for some reason in the early 2000s so I watched it then. Okay but I really don't get the hype.

FYI, From what I recall, Scarface was not well received and even had an X rating at one point (dont quote me on that)all due to the violence and profanity.
So it was controversial for sure but I dont remember it being well received, at least until later IIRC

Day 5
An emotional scene (could be tense, sad death, love scene etc...)

Im going with the "funny how" scene from Goodfellas
Scorsese amps up the tension between mobsters Henry Hill and Tommy DeSimone when Tommy takes offense when Henry says he's a funny guy after hearing him tell an entertaining story.
The extras weren't told of the improv so Scorsese could capture real reactions and Liotta's draws out the tension when staring down Pesci before realizing its a joke.
This scene showed the volatile nature of mobsters, even between good friends like Henry and Tommy.

Day 5
An emotional scene

There are so many to chose from in this type of category. But I'm gonna go with the end scene from Seven.

Title: Re: 30 days of movies challenge
Post by: TheNorm on March 12, 2018, 06:30:54 PM
Lots of good choices...didn't know about the Goodfellas scene, and I think we all know about the filming of the scene from Alien. :) The end from Se7en was incredible too! Could run a Top 5 with this...

Day 5
An emotional scene

Inside Out

"Who's your friend who likes to play? Bing Bong Bing Bong..."
Throwing this in spoilers since the movie is still fairly recent and the clip title gives it away, but...this one's always the one that gets me the most (still, 3 years later) in a movie that has a good amount of emotional scenes.

Spoiler

Day 6
A relatively unknown film you always recommend

Couple of options here but Ill go with Frailty. Bill Paxton isn't one of my favorites for a leading role but he does a convincing job here.
Matthew McConaughey delivers as does Powers Boothe. A surprisingly good flick.

Day 7
A film that represents a genre you don't normally like

I dont typically go for flicks with subtitles, but Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon changed that for me.

Day 6
A relatively unknown film you always recommend

Howl's Moving Castle. This is a Japanese animated film by writer/director Hayao Miyazaki.

Synapses: Sophie (Emily Mortimer) has an uneventful life at her late father's hat shop, but all that changes when she befriends wizard Howl (Christian Bale), who lives in a magical flying castle. However, the evil Witch of Waste (Lauren Bacall) takes issue with their budding relationship and casts a spell on young Sophie, which ages her prematurely. Now Howl must use all his magical talents to battle the jealous hag and return Sophie to her former youth and beauty.

Miyazaki is mostly known for his film Spirited Away which won the 2002 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. But I find that Howl's Moving castle is an easier film to follow for those who are just starting to look into Japanese animated films.

Day 7
A film that represents a genre you don't normally like

Cargo from Swiss director Ivan Engler.

This is a science fiction film which I do watch a lot of. However, it is a German Language film, which I don't watch a lot of subtitled films, as I find it hard to follow read most of the time. BUt I did enjoy this one quite a bit.
Title: Re: 30 days of movies challenge
Post by: BojackHorsefella on March 14, 2018, 01:02:41 PM
Wow, both great choices Crewe, and CFLNut, I haven't watched any Miyazaki but I've heard so many people rave about his films (especially Howl's Moving Castle). My girlfriend has a Totoro tattoo even. I'll definitely have to check out Cargo, love sci-fi.

Day 6

Coherence, easily. Science fiction movie that was on Netflix for awhile and now seems to have disappeared into the abyss. It's a movie about people at a dinner party who become, essentially, Schroedinger's Cat. I love this movie so much.

(Honorable mentions because I HAVE to: He Was a Quiet Man, starring Christian Slater, and The Invitation, which may still be on Netflix. It was also a bit more predictable than the other two).

Day 7

Paddington (1 or 2, take your pick). Now, let me clarify a little. I don't mind kid's films. Obviously Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar have all done incredibly work that speaks to both adults and kids with their cartoons.

However, these "animated CGI animal interacts with actual humans" are usually horrible and/or have the lowest form of jokes (typically, fart or poop jokes). Alvin and the Chipmunks, Peter Rabbit, nonsense like that.

Not Paddington, though. I had been hearing, with the impending release of the sequel, about just how incredible the first one was from all types of people and I really didn't believe it. Then I watched it on a flight and was absolutely floored by just how good it was. I do think I like the first one better than the second, but I've become a Paddington promoter ever since viewing them. Do yourself a favor and check out the first on Netflix and if you like it, try to see the second one if it's still in theaters.

Slacker. ;)

Day 6

Layer Cake. Not your typical crime thriller, with the main character plotting his retirement. Tells a pretty damn good story though with some sweet twists throughout. Daniel Craig's performance in this is also believed to be the reason he became the next James Bond.

Day 7

Pitch Perfect. I don't necessarily 'not like' musical comedies, but they don't typically hit my radar as movies I need to see and it was the same with this one. Never would've even watched it until I stumbled across it on HBO, and the only reason I stuck around then is because it had the cute actress from Up in the Air that's funny on twitter (Anna Kendrick) on the screen at the exact moment. Dialogue and the humor kept me there and it's been one of my favorites since.

My god I cannot agree with this more. I saw the reviews for the second one on Rotten Tomatoes when it released and thought "WTF?!" So I went and bought the first one to give it a shot. Not long after I was booking it to the theater to watch the second one. They're such fun movies.

It was hard to make a distinct decision here. Apollo 13, Erin Brockovich and Goodfellas all came to mind, as well as All the Presidents Men and... well, I digress.
Im going with Escape From Alcatraz.
Just wonderful storytelling with Eastwood perfectly cast as Frank Morris. Dont expect Dirty Harry but instead a tightly wound keen observation of prison life and the attempt to escape.

Day 8
Your favorite "based on a true story" film

The Bridge on the River Kwai. There are several others that I could have picked But this is one of my favorites by far. Alec Guinness gives a masterful performance in this, especially in the end when he realizes that he has been committing treason by collaborating with the enemy.

Honorable mention to A Bridge Too Far & Schindler's List. Both of which are very good shows in their own right.

Day 8

Man on the Moon. I've loved this movie since it came out (and enjoyed the behind the scenes footage in the "Jim and Andy" Netflix documentary, even if the interview parts with Jim Carrey were a bit pretentious even by my standards). I always wonder if, growing up at the time Andy Kaufman was around, if I would have been on his side or against it, especially not knowing if it was all a joke.
Title: Re: 30 days of movies challenge
Post by: Crewe on March 15, 2018, 03:54:20 PM
Man, good suggestions all the way around.
Tider, I think it was fairly accurate in substance although it fudged the timeline as was necessary.
Bridge over the River Kwai, my uncle got me in to that one, was one of his faves too.
Man on the Moon was fantastic, but follow it up with Jim and Andy, the Netflix doc. I was well into Kaufman growing up; the Taxi sitcom and especially the wrestling, damn was that fun. The great thing was, as you mentioned he would do anything as long as it was funny to him. Didnt mater who else got it.
When he wanted to film a part of his special so that the TV audience would think their vertical hold was off was freakin brilliant.

its between Pulp Fiction , Oh Brother where art thou, or Big Lebowski....

usually a quote pops up daily at work.

"That is a tasty burger"

"Allow me to retort"

"You sold your soul?"
"Well I wasn't using it"

"I'm a dapper dan man myself"

"THis is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps" (TV edit version)

I cannot believe I didnt see Christmas Vacation on here. It was between that one and Caddyshack for me.

Day 10
Favorite western

Unforgiven for me.
That was the first film I remember that examined the idea of actually killing a man, deserving or not.
This film deconstructed the myths of the west. Hackman's character delved into the reality of the quick draw and the ability to shoot someone farther than 10 feet away (especially if the sonofoabitch is shooting back atcha...that'll flat rattle some folks)
And the fact that alcohol was as responsible for creating killers as anything, the yellow journalist that create the legends and so on.
Eastwood created the spaghetti western and he dissolved it as well. Such a masterful flick, not to mention, top notch acting and directing.
Even re watched this not long ago, still holds up.
I have other front runners but Ill wait to see if anyone else chooses them.

Yeah, I thought about Vacation and Xmas Vacation. Honestly, it was a tossup between those and Ghostbusters (I use the "nice shooting Tex!" line way too much)

Day 10

This is interesting for me because I never really got into westerns. The classics never interested me (I think Unforgiven may be the only Eastwood western I've seen) and most of the modern ones just don't reach that level.

So, this one's a bit of a tossup for me. I enjoyed the Bale and Crowe 3:10 to Yuma and the Coen Brothers True Grit.

But, if I'm honest, I think I have to go with John Wayne's The Searchers. Because honestly, what western truly tops that final scene?

Unforgiven would be my default answer, very good choice.
You have no idea how close I was to putting Blazing Saddles here. :D
But I'm going with Tombstone instead. Just one of those movies that I'm stuck watching if I find it playing. Kurt Russell is a great Wyatt and Val Kilmer nearly steals the film as Doc. I don't care if it takes liberties with the history, the movie is entertaining.

Interesting you bring up the Searchers  :D
I really enjoyed True Grit as well, quite the departure from the original.
One I really liked that I feel was seriously overlooked was The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Superlative cinematography that really created a feel of the times while telling its own story.

Norm, Blazing Saddles wouldve been accepted lol
I really liked the treatment of Tombstone. It was one of the first to suggest a gray area to the Earps, and while I really enjoyed it and will watch it most times, it really evolved into sort of summer blockbuster type and I dont say that to do it a disservice at all.
As much as I dislike Costner, his Wyatt Earp is a much better narrative that investigates the Earps further and discusses many of the main plot points Tombstone doesn't even address. Dennis Quaid was also spot on with his Doc as well. Sorry, I love discussing the southwest post civil war but I digress

most disturbing film

Requiem for a dream. man, thats a one time watch film for me if there ever was one.
Title: Re: 30 days of movies challenge
Post by: BojackHorsefella on March 18, 2018, 02:14:35 PM
I never saw it, so I won't say The Human Centipede.

And I probably would've taken Requiem.

So, in a pinch, I'll go with another Darren Aronofsky film from just last year, which I loved, but was awfully disturbing: Mother!

This was probably my favorite movie of 2017 but it is NOT for everyone. You will either love it or hate it, there is no in between. The film has a vast amount of layers and is a religious allegory, a meditation on the relationship between artist and art, a commentary on our treatment of the planet that fosters all life and so much more.

But the events that unfold over the course of the film, especially the culmination at the end, are extremely out there in that Requiem sort of way. Such a great film, but so weird.

Day 12
A film you were sure you would hate but ended up liking

Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone...had absolutely zero desire to see this or read any of the books, and I used to even joke about these people that were waiting for a midnight release back in 2000 (the 4th Potter book, Goblet of Fire). But a coworker was looking for someone to go see this with, so I went...and it was enjoyable enough that I bought the book soon after...then the second...then the third...then the fourth book that I had joked about people standing in line for. By the time I'd finished those four I still had to wait another year for the fifth...guess who was standing in line for the final three books at midnight?

Can't think of many things I've been more wrong on than this Potter universe, and I'm more than happy about it.

Can't say I've seen that many. Sleeper, Ed Wood, and Young Frankenstein might genuinely be it, unless I'm forgetting something (Schlinder's List).

But yeah, I think I'm going to go with Ed Wood on this one. Really tough to not choose Young Frankenstein, but I've always had issues with the third act of that movie not quite living up to the rest. Ed Wood, however, is solid throughout and just such a great performance by all involved.

Psycho is a damn good one...never seen Ed Wood. Young Frankenstein is great.
Gonna go with Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, even though lately it's not as humorous as it used to be. Something about a brain-addled madman being in charge of a nuclear weapons arsenal and whatnot.
This is easily Kubrick's best work.

Alright y'all, time to play some catch-up:

Day 1
A movie you are embarrassed to admit you like.

Uhhhh maybe Mean Girls? Not sure I'm really embarrassed about that one though. Can't think of a good one for this.

Day 2
An actor/actress whose movie you will see regardless of negative reviews

I'll watch just about anything that Tom Hardy's in.

Day 3
A film that made you a fan of the director

My answer probably would've been the same as Norm's, it was The Prestige for me that really made me a huge fan of Christopher Nolan. I did actually watch Memento though :) Otherwise I would say recently, Get Out has made me a huge fan of Jordan Peele (and also made me take him more seriously). That has easily skyrocketed up to one of my favorite movies of all time and hit so many of the right notes for me and my friends.

Day 4
A popular movie of any era that you consider overrated

Not sure if this one is a super popular one, but Gran Torino for me. I'd always heard how good it was but I thought it was terrible. Some truly terrible and cringe-worthy acting, even when taking into account that many of them weren't actually actors.

Day 5
An emotional scene (could be tense, sad death, love scene etc...)

The opening of Up always gets to me. Bah, that damn music. Honorary mentions for the ending scenes in Coco and Paddington 2.

Day 6
A relatively unknown film you always recommend

The Nice Guys. Absolutely love this movie and think it's brilliantly written and funny all the way around. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling work together tremendously well in this.

Day 7
A film that represents a genre you don't normally like

I usually hate musicals, but La La Land is easily one of my favorite movies. I love all the music from it and am a big fan of both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. It resulted in a pretty great mix and I still listen to the soundtrack frequently.

Day 8
Your favorite "based on a true story" film

Does 300 count? Whatever, don't care. Definitely 300.

Day 9
Your most oft quoted movie

Anchorman for sure. I'm constantly in a glass cage of emotion!

Day 10
Favorite western

Can't say I watch a lot of westerns. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly probably stands out.

Day 11
Most disturbing film

Old Boy (the original Korean version). It's just so messed up what happens to this guy.

Day 12
A film you were sure you would hate but ended up liking

Mentioned it earlier in the thread when Buc brought it up, but it was Paddington for me.

Day 13
A movie you will watch anytime you see it on tv, even if not from the start

Any of the Harry Potter movies. Some are better than others but for the most part, it's the easiest thing that I can constantly re-watch over and over again.

Day 14
A favorite black and white film

Definitely Schindler's List.

Tider, I can understand that.

Thai, good to see you here!
Re: Gran Torino; Eastwood is known for using non actors, especially here, and I agree, to an extent. yes there were some cringeworthy scenes but at the same time, Eastwood's character was quite compelling and I really enjoyed the story. Basically, I agree with you on the actors, but I disagree that it was a terrible movie.
Props for Good, Bad and Ugly.....and yes, 300 counts! lol

This topic could spawn 100 different directions, but lets try.

Title: Re: 30 days of movies challenge
Post by: BojackHorsefella on March 22, 2018, 11:03:01 AM
Well shit, I already chose Mother!

So, I'll go with a different Darren Aronofsky movie and, perhaps, my favorite movie of all-time: The Fountain.

Granted, I see the movie now as fairly straightforward, but that's my own interpretation of it. You may watch it and feel differently, but in my mind, the movie is one large metaphor. It also, however, discusses the topic of death without the typical tropes that go along with that. Rachel Weiz does a really great job as Hugh Jackman's terminally ill wife, and the direction the story goes ends on a positive note, which, I must say, does not jive with my personal view of death which is perhaps one of the reasons I find this movie so fascinating (my #1 fear is death).

So yeah, The Fountain.

Im looking for your idea of best comedy movie. Could be for any reason, how you relate to the material, characters, the story, jokes, etc...
I have a hard time letting go of the films I grew up watching over and over and over in the theatre because they made such an impression on me, and my lexicon.
Smokey and the bandit, Caddyshack, Stripes, Blues Brothers, Animal House, Cheech and Chong...but the one I will go with is Airplane.

Airplane is still a great comedy, and Airplane 2, where not as funny, still had some good laughs.

As far as favorite I'l go with Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Love this movie and it is by far the best Monty Python movie of them all. The movie actually makes very little sense at all and I think that is whats so appealing about it.

Office Space is a winner and loved the hangover too. It revitalized my hope for the genre.

b]Day 19
A film you consider to be the best sports film[/b]

When Im considering what makes a sports film the best for me, Im looking for realism. A few reach this plateau for me along with a believable story.
I really like Bull Durham. Written by a former minor leaguer, it really captured baseball. Tin Cup was another good one, and believe it or not, The Bad News Bears (not the god awful remake)
Theres still a few in the tank, but IM mainly considering two now and I know the one I omit will be picked up in this thread ;-)
Im going with *61
A wonderful film depicting the race for Babe Ruth's immortal HR record. Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle are teammates who care less about the record and more about winning but the media buzz is just unrelenting. The pressures on not just them, but the team is almost immeasurable.
If you're a baseball fan, you've seen it. If you're a sports fan, might want to give it a look anyway.

Rocky.

Where as it did spawn 5 sequels, with the same plot, the first one was the best. As a kid I didn't really care for it but as I got older I learned that it's more then a film about boxing, but more of a David vs Goliath / Coming of Age / Love Story.

So many to choose from. Moneyball and Rush were both very well done, but I think I'll go with Remember the Titans. This can also fit into the 'movies I'll watch whenever it's on TV'.

My thoughts jumped to Vader v Skywalker in ESB, Enter the Dragon, hell, Rocky.
But im going a little off course here and am going with True Romance, Alabama v Virgil

Also pretty much the entirety of The Raid: Redemption. Example:

Day 20 Best fight scene

I'm going a little off beat here and taking the sword fight scene between The Dread Pirate Roberts & Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride.

Where not as epic or violent as some others it was a very well choreographed scene.

Princess Bride is a killer choice for this, actually. Nice pick.

Thai, I need to see both The Raid and The Raid: Redemption. However, I did see Judge Dredd which is basically American The Raid and I do recall enjoying the film profusely, even though I can't recall specifics enough to have used it for this (also, John Wick).

Anyways, the point of this was to comment on the necessity that I see The Raid films and correct that gap in my movie knowledge.

You absolutely have to check it out. Some truly awesome and brutal fight choreography. I think the first one is very clearly better than the second, but still worth seeing both.

I recall enjoying the Raid as well, haven't seen II yet.

Day 21
Favorite remake or reboot

Theres room for interpretation here, i.e a movie converted to a tv series.

I have a few that vie for the top position, but Im going with Mad Max: Fury Road.
Although it really is neither a remake or a reboot, at least based on interviews I read from George Miller.
Interestingly, he plays it as another story in the legend of Mad Max. The idea is that when future generations would be discussing such a hero, they would not discuss where Fury Road took place in the Mad Max movie timeline, nor the age of Max etc...

I typically don't like most remakes or reboots after the originals

HOWEVER

I can say Batman Begins and not feel bad about myself because that was obviously a great reboot of a franchise that led to 2/3 of a great trilogy.

Batman Begins would've definitely been my choice, especially after the absolutely trash Joel Schumacher Batman movies. Spider-Man: Homecoming is up there for me, and I'm so glad he's finally been rebooted in the MCU. However, I'm going to go with

Ocean's Eleven. Easily my favorite heist movie and I'll watch it anytime it's on. The chemistry in this cast was incredible, and it shows in the final product.

Day 22
Worst remake or reboot

Bad News Bears, without question. I know there are others that are worse, but this mauled a pillar of my youth, and by all accounts, the Billy Bob mess was still a pretty horrid film.
Im betting they were banking on his Bad Santa persona carrying the film, but not realizing that's not at all what the Matthau character was about.

Day 22
Worst remake or reboot

There are probably 422 movies I could name. The most recent was Ghostbusters. I really tried to like the movie, I liked the original, wasn't a super nerd fan of the original like many others, I just thought it was better than ok. I actually was looking forward to a new coat of paint. I saw the mixed reviews and like some people I thought the hate of the movie was just unwarranted because they did not want female leads in the movie.

I gave it a shot and realized the hate of the movie was warranted. The timing was off, there was no chemistry and it seemed thrown together. I do not think I laughed at one thing. I fell asleep the first time through, and had to watch it again. It was not a good movie by any means. I am sorry but that movie sucked hot sweaty nads after a marathon.

Title: Re: 30 days of movies challenge
Post by: Crewe on March 29, 2018, 11:15:36 AM
I was against it just because Im against remakes in general, but when I saw the the cast saying the hate was men hating women an seriously embellishing the rage, I signed off. Even the trailer, which usually showcases finer points of the movie, was absolutely terrible. I still haven't seen it and probably never will, unless its used as part of my release from captivity.

The Muppet's.

Honestly to me this just did't feel like the Muppet's of old. I loved the original TV show, and the original movies, except Muppet's from Space. But the reboot was just not on par with the rest of them.
Title: Re: 30 days of movies challenge

CFLNut and I agree on nothing, clearly.

I'm going to go with It. Everyone's been raving about the new one that recently came out in theaters and I thought it was so-so at best. The original, while usually much maligned vs the novel, was somehow closer to the novel and did a far better job with Pennywise itself. The new Pennywise was far too horrifying in clown form, they messed up Mike's entire arc and the ending was...really, really stupid.

Pacific Rim: Uprising, which I thought was ok. Didn't hold a candle to the first one, Scott Eastwood is one of the worst actors I've ever seen, and some of the story angles were extra dumb. But it did deliver on having giant robots fighting giant monsters and John Boyega is funny, so it was good enough.

Post by: BojackHorsefella on March 30, 2018, 01:03:58 PM
Hm, I responded to this but I guess I forgot to actually post it.

So, I've always seen a lot of movies because I prefer the theater. Plus, I have MoviePass, so I just pay the monthly price and get to see a movie a day for no extra cost (I actually just signed my son up for an account too since they have the new user promotion of $6.95/month. He sees plenty of movies too and that'll save me money when he visits and we see movies together. Had to lie about his age though).

So, the last movie I actually spent money on was because I had to buy my girlfriend's ticket, because she does not see many movies, and that was for "Thoroughbreds" (which I'd recommend).

It was originally released in episodes via Joss Whedon's website, I think? Either way, it was originally released as like, 4 or 6 episodes, but by now yeah, you can just watch them all as one cohesive movie.

Gonna go with an extremely easy one here and say X-Men and Hugh Jackman.

A quick IMDB search he wasn't up to much on the Hollywood side of things (I can't speak for whatever he may have done down under), outside of a few TV appearances. Then he got the role of Wolverine and, as they say, the rest is history.

Mr. Mom and Michael Keaton.

Almost went with "Beetlejuice" for Michael Keaton, then I remembered Mr. Mom existed and I haven't seen it.

Harrison Ford, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Where as this did come out after American Graffiti & Star Wars episode 4 & 5 , Raiders was his first true leading role and showed that he could carry a film as the main character.

Day 28
A film that was a staple in your era you wish the previous generation would "get"

A for instance here is me not really seeing the attraction of Superbad or 21 Jump Street, not suggesting those films are the nucleus of a generation but it will illustrate my point.

I have a few choices to run with here; Breakfast Club and Risky Business comes to mind, but I think everyone gets those films so Im going with Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke. These guys were pop culture before the John Hughes era took over the Gen X voice.
As an aside, it irritated me when Judd Apatow was anointed the redeemer of the pot films, which is utter bullshit. His films are rom-coms with a guy who occasionally smokes pot. You compare that with Cheech and Chong, its not even close to the same thing, their movies were all about the high. /rant

The previous generation or the following generation? Because your issue with Cheech and Chong seems to be that today's generation doesn't get it

My post was poorly worded. Yes, the following generation. I was thinking films previous to the generation....good catch

Alright then

Films that future generations don't get. This is kind of tough, because 1) I have no idea what kids these days find entertaining and b) part of that is because I had my son at 18, so he's more or less latched on to all of the things I like. It's not the same pop culture gap that, say, my dad and I have, him being either 32 or 33 when I was born. 18 years actually isn't terribly hard to play catch up on.

So, from personal experience with my own 12 year old son, I'll go with this: The Lord of the Rings. Yup, the kid that loves Star Wars, Marvel, even Tron: Legacy just has 0 desire to see Lord of the Rings. I don't know if he just assumes it'll be some stuffy, old person 4 hour slag, like a western set in Middle Earth or something. Or maybe it's just an attention span thing that he refuses to fight in order to take in this cinematic excellence. Regardless, he has 0 interest in the films.

I DID get him to watch the first one (extended cut, of course), but that made him even less receptive to watching the other two, even though Two Towers is, of course, the best one.

Per my first paragraph in that prior post, I didn't expect to be so completely unhip and out of touch when I'd only reached thirty. I'm the oldest person my age in the world.

Day 28

My choice is due to the popularity of the modern superhero movies, which i find tend to focus more on CGI effects, and action violence, instead of dramatic story telling. So I'm going with Superman, staring Christopher Reeve. These movies had very little in the way of fighting in them and tended to focus more on Superman/Clark Kent as a person instead of solely as the hero that always wins.

Really had to think about this one for a bit, but a good portion of Cold War movies from the 80s could probably be my answer. Anyone that grew up in that era knows the threat was real, and movies weren't in short supply to demonstrate that (WarGames, Red Dawn, The Day After, Threads, The Manhattan Project). For awhile in the very late 80s/early 90s up until a few years ago, that faded away while new enemies popped up. Just to choose one, I'll go with Countdown to Looking Glass, a 1984 movie that was styled in the setup of following a news broadcast in the days leading up to a confrontation between the US and Soviet Union. I remember watching this on HBO (I was 11 at the time) and it scared the hell out of me. Interesting to me how some things seem to come back.

Hell, can even find it on youtube. Dated for sure...and if you do watch you might recognize the reporter at the 1:56 mark.

Red Dawn - Red Dawn to me because of the cold war. My generation was the last one to grow up with that. We would have nuclear attack drills once a year(or was it every other year? we seemed to stop after the 6th grade though), and get under our nuclear fallout proof desks. They would tell us where the fallout shelter was at the city hall. Red Dawn gave an idea what it would be like if they invaded and Russia was a feared country,

Day 29
Free day

Promote or discuss any film you wish for any reason.

ill take one that hasn't been discussed yet, Platoon (1986)
With family having survived Vietnam, I knew what I read, but it was still hard to understand, and no-one, especially those that were there, would talk about it. Even as a real youngster, I didnt know what I was seeing on tv, I didnt understand when my parents talked abut it, I didnt understand the effects it had on people. Those there, and the ones at home.
At that time, information wasn't at your fingertips the way it is now and as I went through high school it wasn't at the forefront of my mind as much as society was moving beyond the war.
There weren't dozens of films released seemingly every week back then, so a good one was really an event and when this one arrived, I thought it would be a good war movie.
I didnt know it would help me understand so much more. It made me cry, it made me angry, it made me feel like everyone else who lived it.
That film impacted me heavily and has stayed with me to this day.

Day 29

I come to you to extoll the virtues of the unfairly maligned film Speed Racer.

This movie was a box office bomb and received beatings from critics. It has a cult following though for those who can appreciate all the film has to offer. From absolutely incredible, colorful visuals to what amounts to a charming, live action cartoon. Yes, there are some crazy gags, especially concerning his kid brother and the monkey, but that's not really any different from the popular Japanimation style of the TV show.

Emile Hirsch does a good enough job as Speed, but it's really John Goodman, as Pops Racer, that's the heart of the movie for me. I love just about everything John Goodman does and this is honestly one of his best performances. He makes Pops Racer feel like a person that actually exists.

All of this leads to an incredible finale that ties the whole movie together. It's really just such a fun, entertaining movie that yeah, is campy, but that's all part of it's charm.

I'm just going to mention one of the most underrated movies from the late 80s...a great odd-couple action/comedy that gets awesome chemistry from the two principal actors as well as some strong supporting roles as well. The movie works because the two actors work so well together, even if it's a formula that's been used a bunch of times before: two people that don't necessarily like each other but have to cooperate to get out of a jam while on a road trip from New York to LA, and end up having a healthy respect for each other by the end of it. I'll always believe this is one of Robert De Niro's best performances on film, and Charles Grodin played a great foil to De Niro's bounty hunter. Midnight Run is still enjoyable to me almost 30 years later. :)

Here's the theatrical trailer...enjoy.

Wasn't a big box office smash, tends to get overlooked in "best films of the 80s/comedies/etc." categories, more of a cult classic...

agreed, Midnight Run is beyond awesome.
If you want more Charles Grodin and a seriously overlooked film, go with Seems Like Old Times with Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase and Charles Grodin.
That one's up there for me as well.

This has been a fun discussion, and just like the others, I picked up some new watches and was reminded of many I need to go over again.
I debated about what to do for the final day and while this may not be popular, I thought Id try anyway.

Day 30
Favorite Tarantino film (writer and/or director)

its hard to call a favorite because theres more than one I want to pull but Im going with Death Proof for a few reasons.
One, I really like Kurt Russell and think he's a good actor. Second, Zoe Bell's stunts were incredible. Third, this film captures the drive in fare perfectly! It was as if Tarantino read my mind while making this film and it turned out to be a good one IMO. Most people put it as the worst of his films but for me, its highly rated.

Best Tarantino movie....

Allow me to choose Inglorious Basterds. For so many reasons:

"The Bear Jew"

Delivering Christoph Waltz to a mainstream audience and kick starting his Hollywood career.

Also this is the first time I personally recall seeing Michael Fassbender as well. Really, the whole cast is amazing.

The unrealistic ending. Nothing prepared the audience for that, and it went from a movie where you're expecting a certain level of heartbreak and failure and instead get total wish fulfillment.

The dialogue the entire way through, the incredible cast, Sam Jackson's brief narration, just every element is so meticulously crafted and beautiful and just....well, the final line of the film really sums it up.

Best Tarantino movie? Gotta go with Pulp Fiction for me. This is the movie that was my introduction to Tarantino and it just holds a special place for me. Travolta's revival (again), all the guest stars, Christopher Walken's cameo...I could go on. Love this movie.

Pure 80's cheese, with Randy Quaid before going insane, Charlie Sheen before going insane, Clint Howard before going sane. Has characters named Skank and gutter boy. Hot chicks, bullies, 80's music.

My Other movies were better off dead or Beetlejuice. This one doesn't have the following though.
