Title: The 2020 Hockey Thread
Post by: TheNorm on February 23, 2020, 01:57:12 AM
So one of the more peculiar aspects of NHL rules is the necessity of the Emergency Backup Goalie (EBUG). Teams are typically allowed to dress 18 players, plus two goalies. However, if both your starting goaltender and your backup get injured, the home team typically has one or two in the crowd on contract as the EBUG. The chances of it happening are remote, but it has happened. For someone like me that used to play goal back in the day, it's a fucking dream.

Well, let me introduce you to David Ayres, a 42-year old zamboni driver for the Leafs farm team, and the EBUG in Toronto earlier tonight for the game between the Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes.

Coming in cold after the Hurricanes goalies both go down, and then becoming the goalie of record when Carolina retakes the lead? Let me say this again: that's the fucking dream. Did it while wearing a Leafs t-shirt under his Canes jersey too. So damn glad I got to catch the final 15 minutes of this one. What a night...props to this guy, and from one goalie to another: cheers.

Here's the final seconds.
