#rayrice let go by the Ravens. Mrs. Ray Rice, is upset her meal ticket just got fired.  I can't believe she married that man after he knocked her out like that.

Because statistically speaking, it's not that easy to do for a myriad of reasons.

As for Ray Rice, fuck him. I hope he never gets another NFL job, but I'm not that naive. Real men don't hit women, period. People like Ray Rice (and Floyd Mayweather) are gutless assholes.
"But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity." - Martin Luther King, Jr

So, here's what I've learned from Roger Goodell...

It is ok to hit a woman. It is ok to admit to hitting a woman. But, if you do it on videotape and that videotape is seen by the public...that's where the line is drawn!

Odd how so many people can see the same thing and get different conclusions.

#1 he suspended Ray Rice (allegedly without seeing the video.) According to reports they just got the video the other day. Very few people complained about the 2 game suspension. Steven A Smith even defended Rice. No one is calling him out.

#2 again Rice was suspended and hardly anyone was outraged until the video became public.

#3 The video was "extra" evidence and everyone was shocked by the horror of the video.

Now all of this is assuming the NFL did not see the video before the ruling came down. I had an issue that Rice only got 2 games, instead of 5 or 6. After seeing the video I agree that he should have been cut from the team and get a year (at least ban). Seeing it happen makes it worse than just the report of it. The ravens and the NFL acted on the video supposedly after seeing it.

Yet Steven A Smith gets a pass for defending Rice, and Goodell suspended him and is under fire.

If this makes me an asshole then I'm an asshole, but I'm keeping it real here, this is how I really feel.

Janay not only married Ray, but did so AFTER the elevator incident. The only rational conclusion I can draw from this is that Janay doesn't have that much of a problem with what happened. If she doesn't have a problem with it, why should we? Why should Goodell? Why should anyone?

Before anyone draws the wrong idea, let me clarify: had Janay done the right thing and left Ray after the elevator incident, never to return to him, then not only would I support a lifetime suspension but I would also support Ray himself being knocked unconscious and dragged out of an elevator.

TheNorm

It's rare I get to quote myself, but here it is...you're deluding yourself if you think it's as simple as getting up and walking out. It isn't. Only she knows why she stayed, and I'm not going to pin this whole situation on her simply because she did. My opinion on Ray Rice still stands.

I was going to say the same thing norm, good post.
Not being a jerk here but it's easy to black and white an issue when you are ignorant to all of the circumstances.

Bret

Well, I just read the linked story, word for word. Just finished. And, I am no closer to understanding the issue now than when I started reading. It appeared to just speak in generalities and kind of went in circles providing no real answers. Maybe you guys got something different out of it, I don't know...

Again, disclaimer about me being an asshole, whatever...

She didn't deserve to get hit. Nothing in the world justifies that. I am not placing blame on that at all on her whatsoever. But, it is very difficult for me to sympathize with a woman who goes back to her abuser. I'm sorry, but it just is. It is 2014, and we live in the first world. A simple google search would provide several resources available in any metro area, including Baltimore, for women who want to escape their abusers. I am in charge of me, you are in charge of you, Janay is in charge of Janay. We always have the final say. If someone else "controls" us, it is because we gave them that control, not because they took it from us. Call the cops, tell them you want help. More than likely they'll make that happen.

I don't believe Janay chose to get knocked out. But she definitely chose to go back to the guy who knocked her out and married him, and that's why I don't feel sorry for her.

There are lots of single guys out there. Sure, they may not all be rich, they may not all be handsome, and not too many of them will be NFL players. But, I'd bet you dollars to donuts that a large percentage of those single guys aren't going to hit you.

Crewe

I read a great article the other day, wish I could remember where, but in any event, like I said, it's not that easy.
Sure, just quit drinking, smoking, doing whatever, it's always easy for us outsiders to call em dumbasses and just say quit, thats all.

TheNorm

ESPN Outside the Lines segment finds that the Ravens organization lied about what they knew, and the NFL didn't help matters. John Harbaugh, to his credit, wanted to cut Ray Rice the moment he saw the tape months ago but management shot him down. Great job, guys.
